So - my branch at work is having a (late) celebration for boss's day. I promised to make a cake. I found this yummy recipe for double chocolate cake - but I TOTALLY didn't follow directions. :doh: Well - of course I realized this immediately after I did it (I just decided to put the ingredients in in the order that they said. Unfortunately - I was supposed to split the ingredients - and make a fudgy topping. Well - point being - I attempted to repair it by "taking out" the ingredients that were supposed to be separated - and then completing the recipe as directed. Unfortunately - in the midst of taking out the sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and semi-melted butter (HOW EASY IS IT TO TAKE LIQUID OUT OF CAKE FLOUR/SUGAR, ETC MIX???) Ay. Anyways - I'm looking at the cake now - and it is TOTALLY soggy. Of course - I knew this would happen - but - if any of you know of any fixes for that (and yes - I know this is a useless question...I have NEVER heard of a fix for a cake that is too wet - after it is cooked / semi-cooked). So - now - I'm leaving it in the oven for awhile longer than specified - in hopes that the middle will firm up like the sides are. :sigh:

Well, I wish I had some good advice for you, but I don't think there's anything you can do to fix it, once its been baked.

cut out the middle, fill with strawberries.
recook the middle to create a "crumble topping"

:-) sounds yummy. Though - I'm gonna wait a few minutes. I just looked at it - and it looks - fudgy. So - depending on how that works...it might actually be good - if it sticks together!! :-/
Here's to hoping against hope... (And if it doesn't work ;-) I'll do it the way you suggested.
Sadly - as I decorate cakes - I had all my decorating supplies out - was going to use my gumpaste flowers, etc etc :(

Though come to think of it - I might still be able to do that....The topping is an a hard fudge topping...maybe....maybe if i cut out the middle - put the bottom half empty side up - and the top half empty side down....and fill the middle with strawberries...maybe I could still decorate it as well....
But...that probably wouldn't work lol. :: sigh ::
I have difficulty giving up my original idea - but I should go with yours - as mine seems hopeless - and yours seems quite original and fun :-)

yay! I think it is working....Surprisingly :-) It will be very very fudgy - so I hope it will still taste good - but - if I can decorate it the way I want to, maybe I'll take a pic and put it up here.

A couple years ago, I went to visit my sister, and I was able to stay until the morning of her birthday, but I had to leave by around noonish. So after she left for work, my dad, my nephew, and my sister's au pair and I decided that we should make a cake for her for her birthday. I've always been considered the cook of my family, so it became largely my task. I can't remember why, but we decided to make the cake in a bundt pan. Unfortunately, it didn't have enough time to cool before it had to be frosted so that I could hit the road. So the cake broke as it was coming out of the pan, and it was still to hot to frost. So we proceeded to do the best that we could in terms of decoration.

As you can see, with the cake in two halves, we simply formed the cake into a rather pleasing "S" shape. It did flatten itself considerably due to it not being fully set up. There was no time to make frosting, so we had to use the canned frosting that my sister had in the fridge, which in this case was a chocolate frosting. Because the frosting made it look thoroughly unappetizing given it's shape, it was decided that some rainbow sprinkles, applied in a striped pattern would give it a more snake-like appearance. Unfortunately, this was not enough. with the addition of an ice cream cone for a rattle, and some googly eyes and a pipe cleaner tongue (the only inedible parts of the cake), it was really starting to look like we had almost planned it. The final addition, which in my humble opinion was pure genius, was a marshmallow peep rabbit being eaten by the snake. There was nothing left to do but scrawl happy b-day with the leftover frosting, and voila, a masterpiece to be remembered for ages to come.

well- i actually went back to the oven - and found that it was staying together :-) So...I pulled it out...let it cool...and i ended up getting this very very good chocolatey filling in the middle. So...I went ahead and made peanut butter cream icing...put it on the cake...and - it tasted wonderful :-D Unfortunately - it was so late that I didn't take a picture or anything - but - everyone loved it at work - so I was quite happy :-)
