Defens0rFidei (http://www.christianforums.com/u12828) posted the following in the Formal Debate forum:

I would like to debate someone that supports the "faith alone" version of Christianity.

I am a Catholic that would like to defend the RCC against what I believe to be a heretical teaching.

Defens0rFidei,

I would be willing to debate you on the topic, so long as we work out some details. First, I request that we don't start for at least one week, or, if we happen to format the debate this way, allow that I am given a week to respond to your opening statement; I am too busy to start any earlier than that. Second, what will the debate question be? And, third, will it be a purely Scriptural debate, or include ECFs as well?

There are some other details I would like to work out as well, but before we do that, first let me know if you are you still interested.

Thanks,
~Matt

Hey Matt-

I am interested. :)

The choice for Scripture only can be yours. The timing can be your choice as well.

The question is simply, "Are we saved by faith alone or faith and good works."

Any other details we need to work out?

How about the number of rounds? Maybe 5?

Five rounds is acceptable.

In the interest of keeping the debate concise, I opt for confining it to Scriptural parameters.

The only other detail has to do with the question. Who will go first, since the current question formulation doesn't allow us to determine who is taking the affirmative or negative?

If you don't want to revise the question, I don't mind going first, making the case for the Scriptures teaching a Sola Fide justification before God. Otherwise, I suggest the question be: Do the Scriptures teach that we are justified by faith alone?

Looking forward to the debate,
~Matt

Agreed, the question as you put it sounds good. I will take the negative, and you may go first Matt.

May we bring the truth to light through OUR Lord Jesus Christ!

One edit I would like to request...

Sometimes non-Catholics don't know the actual Catholic teachings, and if I need to present those teachings, I would like to be able to show official councils and writings to do so.

Is that agreeable to you?

That's fine. In fact, given the general nature of this forum, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope to have an opening statement out by next Tuesday or Wednesday. Chances are I'll be able to get it out earlier, but I am quite busy...anyway, I'll PM you when I post it.

Pax Christi,

Sounds like a plan!

Here's to a good match!
