I would be very cautious and read first both Aquinnas and Palamas separetely.... their theology is confusing as it is never mind the modern scholarship... Get the "Triads" of Palamas first and read some Orthodox commentaries before you "dive" into this book....IMO.

Looks interesting. I have been told that Aquinas' approach is much different than the Orthodox approach, even if there are some shared similarities.
One to put on my list.

Expensive little bugger ain't it? :)
At that price, it is bound to be a published doctoral dissertation. In fact, the title sounds like a doctoral dissertation.

Wow. Didn't even notice that. $74 for a 230pg. hardbound? ouch.

Published doctoral dissertations with a fairly low production rate will often run between $75-$100. I am in process of having mine published this year and I am sure the selling price will be around $85. Do you know how much I will get from that? If I am lucky, $5!!!

in all honesty Clem you think that this guy has done a thorough job of juxtapositioning both fathers...??
And if so how do I know if he has missed crucial elements of any of them. I still believe you have to read first both Theologians seperately to be able to critique it and find out their differences.

Actually, I believe it's a woman who wrote the book.
Also, one of the book reviews claims that she chalks up the East's essence/energies distinction to semantics...but some of the reviewers said that the book was very good in spite of that.
I don't know.

Yes, so I hear - and (don't cringe folks!) I really need to read Aquinas' Summa, because I have an Anglican friend who is obsessed with him, and is considering Roman Catholicism, so I need to be armed to the teeth with both Palamas and Aquinas when I discuss these things with him.

yes you do and doing so without any help from someone who studied that stuff like your priest will be tough believe me. Aristotle is no piece of cake and mix it with theology....makes my head spin. I loved my class on the Triads though Fr. Papademetriou was my prof here some more books that deal with that.

A few of those are on my list - his homilies and sermons on Mary, his Dialogue with Barlaam, the Triads. I am currently reading St. Gregory Palamas and Orthodox Spirituality. Very, very good. In a minute, I'll show you what I have on Maximus in my wish list. Maybe you can add anything to that you I might need, or suggest alternatives to ones that are there if you think they aren't sufficient.

No, I didn't hit a jackpot. Same as you, only one or two. I'm just listing everything I need/want. :)
Oh, another on my wish list is Romanides' An Outline of Orthodox Patristic Dogmatics. That looks like it could be pretty helpful.
And I just added: John Cassian: The Conferences from the Ancient Christian Writers series.

NO! I have not read it. I am sorry if it appeared that I was passing some judgement on the book. I was just suggesting that the title and the price led me to believe that it is probably a dissertation.
Apologies!
Clem, what is your dissertation on (if I may ask)?
Well, the working title is something like this (though it may change for publication): The Jewish Scriptures as the Basis for St. Clement's Argument Against the Corinthians in 1 Clement.
I have recently taken several graduate philosophy courses from Holy Apostles Seminary (RCC in Cromwell, CT) and the foundation of their program is Thomistic Philosophy. VERY interesting stuff to read, if you have the time and stomach for it.
Sorry for my late responses to your comments, but I was away most of the day.

Reading all of his works is probably a several year commitment!!!
If you want a very good "smattering", Dr. Ralph McInerny (Notre Dame)....Selected Writings of Thomas Aquinas
He also has a book, though I have not read it, which is a "first effort" at Aquinas...the name of the book escapes me....I will try to find it.
Aquinas' commentaries on Aristotle are very good (if you like that sort of thing.....but not bedtime reading! :) )
