What music do you listen to?
All kinds.
Is praise & worship part of your daily devotional?
No. I can't stand that kind of music. I'm all for praising and worshipping God, but that kind of music doesn't help me do that.

All I listen to is Contemporary Christian Music. I love it!! I have a radio in my bathroom that's always on my fav Christian station. My cable company has a great CCM chanel, with no commercials, and almost all of my cd's are CCM. So, no matter where I am or what I'm doing I have music that is uplifting and keeps my mind on my Lord. Third Day & Mercy me are the best!!!!

I also like Helmut Lotti (classical vocalist) and Dean Martin, plus country music. My tastes cover a lot, but I hate rap, hiphop, dance, house, techno and all of that stuff..

That's sort of true: they sort of make you want to be cool like they are and eventually misbehave or even commit crimes.
Christian rappers do not encourage voilence in their music.
By the way, I listen to almost everything that's on the radio, especially Heavy Metal and RnB.

All kinds, but mostly the so labeled "devils music". I believe in God, but I like heavy metal...........don't worry I haven't figured it out yet either.
Edit: and when I say heavy metal I mean mostly 80's, thrash, power, death, eno-classical metal. Not all this mallcore junk on Mtv or the radio! heh

i am so picky about my music. but i have found some christian bands that meet up to all my standards. sometimes i find christian music to be a little too...trite and shoe box and not really origional or imaginitive. which isn't really surprising, considering the contemporary stuff sort of arose through immitation of popular secular bands.
so i listen to underground/alternitive rock music that most people haven't heard of, but should. i like basically anything from Tooth and Nail records.

My preference is Christian rock and Christian praise and worship. Favorites being SCC, 3rd Day, Keith Green, Delirious, Jars of Clay, Kevin Prosch, Mercy Me, 12 Stones, Switchfoot, Jeremy Camp, etc. Because my wife listens to secular rock and (gulp!) rap, I get a dose of that occasionally as well. I will say that some secular music isn't bad and can sound real good but it's few and far between and overall not to my liking. They just don't compare to the Christian music I listen to.

Some of the options were a bit broad. I just chose secular rock.
Anything from Robert Johnson to AC/DC (what do you know... both those bands/artists have some affilation with the devil :sorry: ) is what I like. Blues, classic rock, hard rock, and so on.
Gimme distorted guitar and fast guitar solos!!

We are blessed with many options. I joke about my old UCC congregation in New Orleans. We were an old German congregation. We sang hymns of the Reformation and listened to a lot of Bach. I used to joke that sometimes we heard something modern--Brahms. Of course, the choir did sing "Morning Has Broken."
My father loved the modern praise songs. Members of my prayer group like modern Christian music. My own favorite Christian work is the Saint Matthew Passion. The local symphony and others performed it at the First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge a few years ago. What a blessing that was!

I must confess I'm not very musically inclined. I like music, but there are often days that I find myself without having heard a single note of it, without missing it.
If I listen to music, it's mostly music from the twenties to the seventies. Most good music was made before I was born.
Musicals are an exception to that rule. *L*
Recently however, I've been looking around for more christian music. So... does anyone have any advice on which Christian music or group would be a good beginners choice for someone who mainly loves folk and 'hippie' music? *L*

Umm, I have tried listening to Christian rock/pop like delirious? etc but am not vastly keen as it seems a little cheesy - just 'cos its christian doesn't mean its great music! I mean I can think of loads of hymns/carols with incredibly turgid melody and harmony lines; but equally there are many Christian choral works I like, so maybe I should keep trying Christan pop :) anyone got any suggestions for someone who likes rock, punk, electronica, alternative, but especially emo? Cheers!

It depends on what mood i'm in, I can listen to anything from Chicofskey to Metallica. They all have an appeal to me at some time. I take no notice of the lyrics and any message they might be trying to persuade. I just enjoy music for what it is.

i know what you mean about the cheese factor! i always thought that too, but know i find myself agreeing and singing along  im going to see delirious on saturday in liverpool (England) and whilst im not a big fan my friend went to see them and said that the worship atmosphere was great and so i thought id go and see them with a group of people from my church.
i listen to allsorts but cant stand dance/trance and such like. i like placebo, alanis morissette, Nirvana (currently being played) and tori amos. i also love the praise music we sing in my church cos well, the Lord deserves to be praised!

What kind of music do you listen to?
I voted Christian pop/rock and Christian Praise and Worship. Basically all I listen to except when I'm on the bus on the way to school and the bus driver plays the local secular station. I can't help that though. lol
I recently got Jaci Valesquez's CD. She’s awesome. AS well as Third Day and kj-52. Switchfoot is awesome. Bebo Norman, Audio Adrenaline, Jars of Clay, Jump 5, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Plus One, TBone. Basically everything. I just love Christian. Especially worship. Rebecca St. James is my fave. The Worship Together CD they announce on TV with the blue cross on it is great and any of the Wow Albums.
Worship is definitely a daily part of my walk with the Lord. I just go in my room, pop in a Worship CD, get down on my knees and praise will all my might. I cry and cry. That is the most important part of my day and the time I feel closest to God. I don't know what I would do without it.
Love in Christ,

I voted for the top three. Mainly it's either Christian P&W or pop/rock to gain product knowledge since I work at a Christian bookshop, and I'm mainly into DC Talk, Supertones, Relient K, Newsboys and Delirious? at the moment. P&W wise I'm listening to a lot of lesser known Aussie groups such as a group called Emu Music, although I don't mind the odd Hillsong and Planet Shakers CD taking a turn. I really only listen to secular stuff that has clean lyrics and doesn't aim to treat the subject of the song as an object eg. Nickelback - Figured You Out

I didn't vote because it didn't really list my music tastes which is really folk music folk-rock, folk-country, Americana, bit of blues and bluegrass and Native American music. Even Israeli folk music!-I also like Bill Miller, a Native American musican who is not only native but folk-rock(Bob Dylan was one of his influences as a musican)--Bill Miller is also a Christian! And all his music is so good---it blew me away the first time I heard him. I had bought a cd of his at a Native American store--I had asked the woman there which cd she could reccomend to me and it was Bill Miller! When I put in his cd and listened for the first time it blew me away and I thought "this guy knows the LORD!" By the way, he's suppose to be on PBS sometime in March so keep an eye out for the show listings. I think there's another Native American musican that will be on that show, too.

I don't listen to a lot of any of them.
I don't know much Christian music, other than the hymms in church.
I like a few of the faster more joyous songs. Iam not keen on the hymms that are slow and dull. I love the fast, exciting and enjoyable Christian music. I think that the music is one of the reasons why most people my age, avoid the church. But one church that i went to while i was finding the right church for me, had drums and guitars which they played great Christian music on. I loved it! :D
I think that it is better to sing happy, fast and joyous songs to the Lord, than "dull" slow ones. Thats just my opinion though.
Anyway, back on topic. I don't listen to top of the pops or many music channels etc. I like theme tunes from games or tv series etc. Like the theme to the 10th Kingdom. "Iam wishing on a star" It has such a nice tune. I love songs which are touching and get through to me.
Though i like a lot of songs from mixed genres really. Some from secular, Some Christian and some that i have no idea about.
I really don't have a favourite. :)

i love my Christian music. i snapped all my unfruitiful cds, ppl call me crazy, but they dont understand that they were such large strongholds in my life it had to happen. Its now a witnessing example- like a baptism of my committment to exposing the stronghold. i love bands like Kutless, 12stones, Antiskeptic, Skillet, Switchfoot, thousand foot crutch, Reliant K, Pillar etc.

I listen to a little bit of everything including Praise and Worship, Christian Rock/Pop, Secular Pop/Rock, Country and Western, a little Classical (very little), Rap and R&B, Heavy Metal, and a little New Age stuff. I consider myself to be quite openminded when it comes to music and listen to it because I appreciate the sound of it, not necessarily the lyrics. However, some songs have great lyrics and I'll readily admit that. I actually don't listen to music much though.

I listen to a lot of music. Jazz, classical, secular rock, hymns or praise music, rap, and a lot of other things. As I grow further spiritually I find myself listening less to Metallica or music with vulgar language or lyrics and more towards music that both sounds great but doesn't take that spirit from me.

I love listening to praise and worship music. I have a couple of favorite songs such as "here I am to worship", "you are my king, "all things are possible" and "trading my sorrows." I also like listening to rap or r&b as long as there isn't alot of bad words. My favorite r&b singers are Alicia Keys and Usher. ;)

In my opinion the only thing that christians should be listening to is christian music (worship or not). It's like this. If you only eat junk food you get sick. Secular music is like junkfood for your spirit. If you eat some junk food then you aren't healthy but you're not getting sick either.(As if you were only listening to christian rock) But the worship music is like the good food or the veggies of your diet. When you get enough you flourish spiritually.

What music do you listen to? Is praise & worship part of your daily devotional?
I generally listen to "oldies" AM radio - love the 60's, 70's, 80's secular wise. After that, forget it. What they call music today is c-r-a-p IMHO. :D
I generally like the harder stuff Christian wise - was a real Christian metalhead in the 80's. :P
As for P & W, generally don't listen to it - too fluffy for me. The closest i get to P & W music would be to listen to the Imperials, Cathedral Quartet or Love Song who all have some great worship songs. That's about it.

I would agree with you if going by what is on the charts, but I can assure you, there is plenty of great, very good quality music today - it just doesn't make the charts very often.:)
I too am a fan of "oldies" music, 60s and 70s in particular - The Beatles, Herman's Hermits, Billy Joel, Cold Chisel, Led Zeppelin..... etc. etc. I voted only secular pop/rock and classical. I probably listen to classical more than any other genre, because I put it on to study and read, whereas I rarely listen to pop/rock when I'm studying or reading.

What music do you listen to? Is praise & worship part of your daily devotional? Mainly I listen to rock, currently wearing an "Abbey Road" T-shirt..., I occassionally listen to classical. I don't listen to christian music too much though I occassionally flip past it on the radio. The reason I don't listen to Christian music too often is because I've heard the same songs for the past decade and I like a little variety.

I agree with your statement..wholeheartely..however there are some songs that are decent lyrically/melody speaking from outside christian music..and not all christian music is christian..some is wordly/pagan masked with chrsitian lyrics...so moderation in all things is key...actually I prefer quiet..over anything or just insturmental! :)

I didn't vote, because I listen to a smattering of things, none of which fit the bill of anyof the options.
I delve really deep into genres at times, and I switch genres rather rapidly. Right now I'm into post-rock, especially Icelandic wonders sigur ros and mum, along with godspeed you black emporer, which is one of the monsters (big people) of the post-rock world. Aside from that, I'm into the extremely small underground Christian indie scene (starflyer 59, pony express (V---the sig), ln, map, etc.), as well as synthpop (joy electric, kraftwerk) and idm (autechre, squarepusher, pole), which both belong in the wide scope of electronica. Yes, they are all obscure.
I'm pretty passionate and pickey about my music. And I enjoy it with vigor.

I prefer quiet when I have an option. My husband loves all kinds of music so I get exposed to a lot. When its just me and my daughter, I like to put on kids Sunday school music. Everything I need to know, I learned in Sunday School. "Father Abraham had many sons, I am one of them, Jesus loves me and all the children of the world, the virgin mary had a baby boy, I'm in the lords army, what a friend I have in Jesus, i've got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart and I need to rise and shine and give God the glory glory." Its important to me to remind myself of these things on a regular basis.
Suday school music wasn't on the list but I'm sure it's the most popular among Christians with young children.

I like Heavy Metal too, but I don't like it when all the main "singer" does is growl. I like him to actually "sing". Mainly I like bands like '80s Metallica, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Megadeth, etc....The kind of heavy metal that I dislike is stuff like Pantera, which is just not my style. i have been struggling with this issue of musical influences and how they well...influence us.
lately i have given away or thrown out my cd's as i have found them to be a negative influence towards my journey with god. as instructed by jesus we were told to fill our hearts minds and souls with positive influences that bring us closer to him, and some music i have found lately do not do that and i find them filling me with teenage anger and jealous feelings that don't belong to me. music is powerful...david proved that with his music to saul and the psalms he wrote...the devil has seen this and realised this is a perfect tool to degrade our minds and tangle us up in contemporary sinful emotions...i pray for guidance with music.

My musical tastes are all over the place (with the exception of country :o and most of what passes as top 40 nowdays: rap, hip hop etc. That's just not my scene.)...but the vast majority of my collection is "secular". I like everything from heavy metal like Metallica (all eras, and caught them twice in concert this year) to Enya and other Celtic artists to classical composers like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. It just depends on what type of mood I'm in. My other favorite bands are U2 and Rush.

(e.g. jamie cullum, norah jones, katie melua and delta goodrem). then it will go on to poeple like pink, christina aguilera and avril lavigne. then onto bands like HIM and linkin park. quite a lot of different music there , i know.
i also think gospal music is realy fab, even though i'm not a christian!

NO to the "praise and worship music" question. I hate, hate, HATE generic mainstream music, and to me modern Christian music sounds painfully like generic pop/rock. But that's jsut my $o.o2...and I am a passionate art-music snob, so feel free to disregard anything I say as the rantings of a deranged soprano :P
I must say that when I want to commune with God through sacred music, there's nothing like Handel's Messiah. I especially love the aria "If God be for us, who can be against us?", and "Surely He hath borne our griefs".
As far as music in general...I love opera, classical, Celtic, klezmer, medieval/renaissance works, Eastern european/gypsy music, and most of all...operatic-pop music (sometimes referred to as classical crossover...Josh Groban-type stuff).
But there are a few exceptions to the anti-mainstream-music thing. Occasionally I do listen to Carman ( ), and I like Maroon 5 and Dave Matthews.

Growing up I had to listen to mostly rock from the 50's and 60's till I got my own radio and would spent every saturday night in my bedroom with the door locked listening to rock. I snuck around to listen to what I wanted to most of my childhood but when I was out of the house and married I listened to country which is pretty much what I have struck with. On occassion I get tired of it and lister to rock again..........I pretty much just listen to what ever I'm in the mood for.

Secular rock, quite a bit of metal, the occasional pop song... I do sometimes use the better worship songs in my devotionals. They sometimes help me focus on God.

I listen to country. But I also listen to western gospel music, which is all country.

Tough poll question since I have a little bit of everything in my collection. Really, from sermons to heavy metal (nothing to heavy :)). But mainly Christian rock, modern praise and worship, I listen to hymns (which wasn't an answer in the poll  ), I also have a sizeable collection of classical music (whatever my choir is singing).

I listen to pretty much anything, unless the lyrics blatantly bug me, but I only voted for six of the genres listed, because I listen to them more often.
Isn't this an interesting reply? Okay, primarily I do listen to secular music, in the pop and rock and heavy metal and jazz realms. But I do listen to Christian music as well. I don't hear that as often, but I like it a lot.

I prefer Christian Pop/rock and praise and worship. But I don't generally like praise and worship as listening to. I like it in a group setting. It seems to mean more.
