So as to not clutter up the thread in the main forum, I have started this thread to hammer out the parameters of a potential debate.

Hi CaDan
There are a number of things i suppose we could debate. I am happy to allow you to choose the topic of your choice, and even begin, and then if it is good with you, we can just procede to take turns from there, addressing one anothers points, making our own points... i prefer posts and points not too long but also somewhat in depth for clarity.

I would think that given present circumstances, an interesting debate might be something along the lines of 'is Jesus God' and "do 'christians' believe that Jesus is God?" Would this be along the line of something you would care to debate?

I suppose I could argue against your first proposition, even though I believe it myself. That is, if you enjoy argument for the sake of argument without personal commitment to the position argued.

As for your second proposition, that is a pretty broad topic, as evidence by the several centuries of Ecumenical Councils it took to nail it down.

Well i would prefer a heartfelt debate CaDan, to be honest, so i prefer we discuss something we differ on.

Just for clarification's sake though, you are saying that you agree Jesus is God, but possibly disagree that "christians" believe Jesus is God?

If this is where you stand i would then ask if you believe Jesus to be 'a god" or "the God"? And if you agreed with me that He is THE God, we could simply stick with the issue of the definition of 'Christian' if you like, if we are in disagreement there.

Yes.

The latter. And fully Man (can't forget that part;))

You propose, "What is a Christian?" as a topic? It is a decent topic, but we should narrow down a specific resolution based upon that topic.

How do you feel about "Are Christians partially defined as those believing Jesus to be God?"

That does not narrow things down much at all. In addition, propositions regarding definitions are nearly undebatable.

I believe in this case the definition could be easily debated scripturally imho. I would be very happy to debate this issue specificly, but if you prefer to narrow it further, i'm listening.

I guess no one else is allowed to participate in this debate? Can we atleast comment on each proposition posted?

i would be fine with it brother, but actually i left that up to CaDan, and left it up to him to choose the topic and start the debate. I'm just assuming this is how he wants to start it off at least.

If he wants it one on one we can start a side thread for discussing it, i'll let CaDan make the call since it was my invitation to him

Sorry--lots of RL work to do today. I'm still turning over something we can talk about in my mind.

No problem CaDan,

Whatever you pick I am sure it will be a good discussion.

If this is going to be a real debate you might want someone to moderate.

If CaDan prefers a moderator we can talk about that, but i think CaDan and i are both adult enough to do this without a referee. I see no need and dont doubt CaDan's capability for honesty and civility.

CaDan, what do you think?

CaDan
4th October 2007, 09:19 AM
I don't think we're really "debating"--more like discussing in a somewhat more orderly manner.

IIRC, our topic is "Resolved: A person who does not believe that Jesus of Nazareth is God may be saved."

Oh, man! We're already debating that in the CR.

CaDan,
We agreed together right here and in pm brother that you and i would meet here and debate your topic.

In another thread you seem to be declining the debate now?

I'll be here, but I would like to do a good job.

Interesting... Hi Belinda... do you believe in the "Real Presence" of Jesus in the Eucharist? Cool.

So, when this debate starts, someone send me a pm and let me know. I would like to lurk. I might learn something...

CaDan stated that he wanted to debate something else entirely and that he would take a couple days to post hius opening debate. I agreed to this, but the last i saw him mention it, he was saying i declined.

To set the record straight, i did not decline the debate, i look forward to the debate and im still waiting for the debate :)

Here is a helpful hint when debating with CaDan...

His a lawyer. It is his job to debate and he is probably pretty good at it. Please be careful.

God Bless
