I just received one of our texts for this new term (which starts tomorrow!)

The Writings of the New Testament: An Interpretation by Luke Timothy Johnson.

AND I got it on sale, regularly £32 on sale for £23!

I'm so excited about this new term starting.
It's all about hermeneutics focussing on the New Testament ( last term was the OT).

It's pink and then it turned green but it was only a magnet.

Hi guys, the post above me was written when dad was confused after a few seizures, its wearing off now.

He has a device implanted in his chest called a Vagus Nerve Stimulator, and it is controlled by a fairly strong magnet. When the magnet is near a computer screen it warps it a bit and turns the screen various colors. That's what happened. In his confusion he thought you guys could see it too.

God Bless.

This is realy great news, dear Karen. Does this go hand in hand with this year Gospels about Luke?
It's good for you - happy studying!

Can you help with this, please, what you are doing here?

Karen is a seminarian (we have at least two others who post here regularly).

Karen, what other fun and interesting classes are you taking this semester?

Also, out of pure curiosity, have you read The Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer? A seminarian I knew back when I still lived in NY had to read portions of it and I'm wondering if you had to as well. If not, I advise you to pick it up because it truly belongs in every Anglican's bookshelf.

Karen, what other fun and interesting classes are you taking this semester? My course is designed to cover one huge topic each semester (we call them 'terms', and there are three terms in a year). So this terms huge topic is Interpretation and Use of Scripture II (New Testament). Apart from hermeneutics, I'm not sure yet what else we will do in the term, but we will be getting our handbooks this weekend. The reading list was huge, but we can pick and choose from it and don't have to read them all.

In the third year we cover Anglicanism more intensively, so it might come into the reading list at that point.

This will cover all of the gospels, Norbie, plus all the rest of the NT. It's never enough time to do any of it justice, but we can continue specific study on any part of it in the future if we want to, of course.

Hermeneutics: you might as well read about that from here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermeneutics).

My favourite book on hermenutics is Berkhof's Principles of Biblical Interpretation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Principles-Biblical-Interpretation-Louis-Berkhof/dp/0801064775/ref=sr_1_3/203-4263486-0006318?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190369314&sr=8-3) (I would be happy to lend you my copy if you wished). I would also suggest his Introduction to the New Testament found online here (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/berkhof/newtestament.html).

I am not sure what your reading list will contain but I find this (http://www.tabernaclebookshop.org/products.asp?category=Books&subcategory=New+Testament+Commentaries) bookshop to be very cheap!! Hendriksen (http://www.monergismbooks.com/nthendrickson.html) is great as are Hodge (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/hodge/ephesians.toc.html) and Calvin (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/calvin/commentaries.i.html).

Thank you, Richard. Berkhof isn't on our reading list, but that is a nice gesture to loan it to me. If I decide I would like to read it, I will keep your offer in mind. :)

That is the exact book we used in our NT class for my MPS - I would have given it to you!!

I hate to dampen your excitement - but I am NOT a Luke Timothy Johnson fan (although you may enjoy it). I am much more fond of Wright. Johnson seems to be a "moderate" in his interpretations. I find his views rather "stale"....
