We totally got dumped on with the snow!!! I couldn't believe it...and I couldn't believe church services weren't canceled!! You know who showed up besides the pastor, organist and elders? The choir people, handbell choir and their families. That's it except one woman who lives down the street from the church! Crazy. Just crazy. I think there were only 4 tables for communion even!!

I would never cancel a church service. If someone can come out in the weather, we'll have church. Our council here has been wanting to come up with a means of cancelling church in inclement weather, but I won't go for it. If the weather is too bad for someone to go out, I would hope they had the common sense not to. But if they can and want to come to church, I'm there.
That being said, we didn't have services today, mainly because no one came out with the ice we had. The power was off four 5 hours this morning so there was no heat, but if someone had shown up, we'd have had church anyway.

We had a week long rain storm here in AZ. My roof leaked at work and is now being replaced. Arizona is just not used to getting rain on a constant basis like that. Since we get so little rain, what happens is, since the ground is so hard it doesn't soak into the soil, it just floods.

Since Tucson has more than tripled in population in the last 40+ years they need sediment water. There major source of water is the 360 mile canal that runs from the Colorado river to north of the city. Phoenix uses recharge systems to inject treated waste waste back into the aquafers. Their water source seems to be mostly from the Salt River and Roosevelt Dam. Zecr, maybe you know more about the canal systems there.

I don't know about the weather elsewhere, but I expect that our crazy weather here in Washington is putting a damper on some people's holiday already. This year's giving trees in our area are focused on both the poor and also those who lost everything in the floods we experienced around the region. I am thinking of contributing to another child's toy today. I know my wife wants snow for Christmas, but I think a mild, warm winter would best, too many people in Washington lost so much in snow/rain related damage. I don't want to ruin anyone's holiday, but I also want to remind everyone as to why we are here. To reach out with the love of Christ Jesus and to serve our neighbor according to thier need and our ability. May God bless those who are less fortunate then us through us.

We canceled our services yesterday, and apparently sometime yesterday early evening they canceled school today. We have a phone tree for when that happens, and someone up top the chain called someone and left a message and just left it at that. The people heard the message this morning and had to do a quick call catch-up and thankfully we all got the message before we headed out the door. In the phone tree if you can't reach someone you're supposed to call the next person down. There were 7 families that were not aware that school was canceled today!
So Jake is enjoying making forts. We got a bit of a dusting last night, and the temps are staying below freezing, so the snow's not going to melt anytime soon. The roads are slowly getting cleaned up. I'm actually a little surprised that they canceled school.
I like seeing all the white snow, and thus far it hasn't turned black yet from car exhaust. Plus it's covering all the yuckiness that is Detroit.

I hear you. The last two weeks we moved all our stuff from the lower floor to the middle floor (split level) so we could have new carpet installed. Then everything from the middle level down to have new hardwood installed in the middle level. Then put everything away AND decorate for Christmas so we could host a carolling party on Saturday. My back and feet hurt so much I could get almost nothing done. Thursday night, I just sat and watched a movie, and tried not to think of all the stuff I had to do. I had a couple of shots of vodka in my diet Pepsi. Next thing I know, I'm not in pain, and I was able to get the whole dining room ready for the party. Couldn't get to sleep until almost 2 that morning, but I got a lot done. Sometimes, liquor helps a LOT.

You'll poke your eye out!I remember the mom saying some thing like that in the movie "The Christmas Story" when the kid wanted a BB gun.
I remember when I was a kid when us guys went into the woods for a BB gun fight. We all knew that they were dangerous if we shot at close range so we decided to stand far enough away so we supposedly couldn't hurt each other. I took aim an allowed for elevation, windage and earth rotation :) and got off a round. Next thing we heard was a chain of expletives. Seems like a BB hit Jack right between the eyes. He still wears the indentation today some 50 years later. We decided that it was safer to shot a tin cans from there on out.

Hi all! I am new here. I hope you don't mind if I post several threads asking all sorts of questions about what LCMS believe.
A lot of my questions will probably arise out of things that are frustrating me about the Catholic faith.
For those that have not read any of my previous questions, I married a Catholic... I went to a Methodist Church growing up, but was not officially Methodist, just attended with a few friends.
I am in RCIA because of the hubby, and as I learn about Catholocism, I am conflicted.
Now I am faced with becoming Catholic in order to maintain family unity with regard to religion... exploring Methodism again... or possibly LCMS (it almost seems like a middle ground between the two).
So any questions I have are always completely with respect as I know very little about LCMS other than what I have found here so far.

My older sis (she's almost 27) married a GREAT guy who is a "cradle Catholic." It became very clear that he wasn't going to be anything other than that, in spite of rarely attending Mass and not being very "Catholic" in his views. I DID recommend a Lutheran or a traditional/conservative Anglican church to them - but...
Anyway, my sis is in RCIA classes. He won't go with her. She asks him questions - but it's OBVIOUS he doesn't know or doesn't agree with the RC position. She began asking her sponsors (with whom they have become personal friends) but they seem amazingly unaware of Catholic doctrine. IRONCIALLY, she phones ME with her questions (you have no idea what our Catholics around here would say about that, LOL). Anyway, I give her a lot of credit for trying to make it all work...
It is MY view that Lutherans (and IF you can find it - conservative/traditional Anglican) has a very special position in Christianity. We are "first wave" Protestants who are really quite close to Catholicism - in fact, Catholics OFTEN like Lutheranism even more than Catholicism! And we are the original Protestants, we're the ones who taught everyone else about Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, Sola Fide, Soli Deo Gloria, as well as the praxis of Sola Scriptura. The Gospel is VERY clear and central. Protestants find Lutheranism refreshingly focused, simple, Christ-centered and biblical. It's an excellent "meeting point." It's a popular one, too! Nearly half of the members of my Lutheran parish are former Catholics (that doesn't include people like me that were never OFFICIALLY Catholic - just active there). In most of the cases, they searched out Lutheran because of a "mixed marriage" - discovering that not only is Lutheranism acceptable to each - but each actually prefers it.
A word, though. Lutheranism cranks out a bit differently in different congregations (as is true in most denominations). MY parish is very open to Catholics. Most of the people cross themselves, there's weekly Sacrament, even the contemporary service is pretty liturgical. And while the pastor is VERY Lutheran ( and I strongly suspect less 'open' to some Catholic views than I am), he does speak of Tradition, liturgy, Sacrament, etc. (He dresses very informally; I wonder why he NEVER wears a colar?). Anyway, a Catholic would instantly feel very "at home" at my church. But that's not the case in all Lutheran churches, I understand. You MAY need to visit more than one. You may need to "chat" with the pastor concerning his views.
May God bless you on your journey, and I pray that WHEREVER you "land" that you will do so as a couple and that it will be a rich blessing to our souls, marriage and family....
Pax

I have deep roots in your great State, don't you know.
It's visible in my love of beer, brats and cheese (although I'm a Charger fan; I know that football is the State religion there and the object of it all is the Packers).
TRUE PACKERS STORY: I have a relative who was driving across a country road in Wisconsin. A state trooper pulled her over for speeding. She explained that she was listening to the game, and was so excited and engrossed that she didn't realize how fast she was driving. After a short conversation about the game, the trooper left - forgetting all about the ticket. Wisconsin. God love it.

It sounds like your sister is very much in a similar situation. My hubby is "cradle Catholic". He attends Mass, and has some of the same values... but not all. At this point, i don't THINK he'd convert. His family is "too Catholic", if that makes sense... including a Priest in the family with a Catholic Mass at family reunions.
So I do need to really do my research. So if I tell him I want to be come Lutheran (or something else) I can KNOW what they stand for and what they believe...
with that list including all the things he likes, and none of the things he hates (as much as possible)

I go to church by myself, my husband grew up in a Baptist church. He doesn't go now. He likes to see if he can get me agrivated a little. He calls lutheranism Catholic-lite. He'll try to agrivate me a little but I just end up laughing at him cause I know he's just trying to see if I can get riled up a little.

I've added you two to my prayer journal (I hope that's okay)....
My brother in law is a GREAT guy, and he totally loves my sis and is very good to her - and it's not like he's some religious wacho, lol. But, yeah, the "Catholic" thing is just key to his identity (if that makes sense) and she realized that before they got engaged. And yeah, he too has priests and such all over his family, and his grandmother TOTALLY THINKS that he goes to DAILY Mass, LOL (he rarely goes to Sunday Mass!). Hey, ....
There are couples that each go their own way on Sunday morning, and I know a whole family that goes to Saturday Mass at a Catholic church and Sunday worship at a Protestant church (honestly won't hurt anyone). But, all to often, couples stop going ANYWHERE - and that's the only unacceptable response.
Perhaps, if you find a "good" Lutheran church, your husband would be willing to to "check it out" with you? But (and here's the tough part) no one should be even asked to go against their heart and faith, their conscience.
Your posts have caused me to do some soul seraching. For almost 3 years, I was in a very, very commited relationship with another and we both - together - joined the same church. I've worked SO hard and I FINALLY feel very "at home." The two of us "parted ways" the night before our engagement was to be official. So, now I could well be where my sis is at and where you are at. And I'm now solidly Lutheran. "And the two shall become one." Who said it was easy? Love - it can be work. Good work, but work.
I pray for His blessings to you and your family.....

My wife works for a Catholic run boys training center (boys who have been in trouble) She works for the CEO and did work for the CFO until about 5-6 years ago. Her boss now (the CEO) is a Brother. He is a really nice guy but his beliefs are all based on work righteousness and what we can do to merit God's grace. He never reads his bible and knows very little of scripture, even the parables taught by Jesus.
I could go on and on about about this but its not my goal to offend or bore anyone. I just feel very sorry for those who still feel that they must some how earn or merit God's grace. It must be a terrifing life to wonder if you've done enough to gain salvation at some point. :sigh:

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! :)
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night, and an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today, in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby, wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger." (http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh217.sht)Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly hosts appeared with the angel, praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest! And on Earth: peace, good will to men, on whom his favor rests." (http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh240.sht)
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another: "Let's go to Bethlehem (http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh234.sht), and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in a manger. When they had seen him, they spread the Word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things, and pondered them in her heart. The Shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

What a joyous day to have as our own. Without Jesus we would have no reason to celelbrate, no need of even going to church as we would be lost forever. But God made good on His promise and gave us His very best, His own Son to be our Redeemer. Now no matter what life brings us we always have reason to celebrate.
Merry Christmas everyone

Almost time to set out to the 11:00 candlelight communion service. We go to this one instead of the 5:00 "family" service because the choir sings and because it's communion. Plus, it's the one day of the year we allow Gem to wear PJs to church.. and she has new ones that she's very proud of. It's probably the last year we'll do it. she's getting so big! Even in her pajamas, she feels all grown up getting to go to the late service with the adults. But she's almost always asleep by the time it finishes.
Merry Christmas, all.

The definition of a supermod isn't what it used to be. (That sounds very wrong)
I think it has more to do with warning/infraction training than our privileges or duties. Right now I think the new trainees are getting the Ms and then will be changed to Ss when they are done training and have taken all their tests.
Once we've passed all our tests, then we are:

Apparently, because of the coding, they can only have a certain amount of different types of positions. So, as PW said, newbies have the Red Ms until they finish training, have passed tests and are off probation. Then, they are moved to Supermod to show their status as being done with all that.
Jim will co-manage TCL with me but there is no coding for manager, so we just put up a banner in our signature to show the identity.

I think it fits in with the Christian community just dandy. Are we not commanded in scripture to judge those within the church body? 1 Corinthians 5:12-13. That's sort of what's going on with the rep system. It's totaly based upon judgment of other people's comments. It's not that a person with more rep points is more important than someone with less rep points. It just means that a person with more points writes better posts or posts people like or agree with mroe, than someone with not as many rep points. Everytime a Christian here throws "do not judge, lest ye be judged" at me, I refer them to this site's own reputation system that is based totally upon judgment of others.

Does that mean that my input is less important than someone elses because I don't have as many rep points as someone else? Based upon what? Based upon how many reps I give out?
But it's not based upon judgement of others. There are threads on this forum that are for the sole purpose of receiving Rep points. How is that judging? Their primary purpose is for people to get a higher rep total. Seems pretty vain to me. It's just a game.

I look at reps as a thank you...
Thanks for making me laugh... thanks for teaching me something I didn't know... thanks for being kind... thanks for agreeing with me, etc.
I don't think of it as judging and I don't think of it as popularity. I may not like someone, but if they post something useful to me, I'll Rep them.

No, it doesn't mean it's less important. It just means that someone may not have liked what you said enough to give you rep points for what you said.
"Based upon what?"
The opinion of the person giving the rep points.
"Based upon how many reps I give out?
But it's not based upon judgement of others."
Correct. It's based upon the judgment of other's comments.

That is pretty vain. I think the rep system should be modified so we can also take away rep points when people say either stupid things or things we disagree with. Let's at least make it a two-way street. Oh, the fights that will lead to. LOL

I put the following question to the people in this thread. In your experience are there "rep snobs"? People who take pride in the fact that all their points or the majority of their points come from people repping their posts and not because they're a site supporter?
RadMan
5th January 2008, 10:56 AM
I think people do take is seriously as an indicator and the ones that don't get reps try to downplay it.
My opinion is that it fosters people and peer pleasers and not honesty. "I'll say what people want to here so I can be liked". I'm not saying the people that are honest don't get reps it just seems to lean more in the other direction.

When I first came to CF, I thought the Reps really meant something. It took FOREVER to get to my first 1000 reps before mine would add any points when I rep'd back. Now, newbies get rep'd swamped within the first hour and probably receive about 10,000 within the first day.
So, reps no longer mean that a person has a reputable voice on this board. To some it has just become a game and others a basic communication device to show that you like someone's post or someone appreciated yours. Numbers mean absolutely nothing.

True. The numbers mean very little, however, the relationships I have fostered playing the rep games have been surprisingly uplifting and very much a blessing. I've learned a great deal about posters I had formed contrary opinions of and it continues to be beneficial.
Many relationships are formed in these games that would have been inlikely in other, more divisive fora. It's touching to watch and I think those who belittle it are being close-minded and missing some great fellowship opportunties.

He could play concert piano and trumpet and couldn't read a note. After he got out of the Marines in the 60's him and I both worked at a music house huckstering pianos off the back of a truck in a 4 state area. We were both wild back then. He was an avid historian, amateur philosopher and an atheist back then. I got to witness to him many times and tried an show him the way to Christ. He ignored me for years but the seed was planted. Years later he called me and said he joined a church and died a Christian and a Lutheran.
