There are some that I consider exceptional. One of these really stand out to me because of its ultimate message of harmony: "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band". It's a Disney musical starring Buddy Ebsen and Walter Brennan.

BTW, I am impressed at how any of you compiled such lengthy lists and remembered all of the movies you did!

Good idea MrJim

We try of possible to watch a movie or two every weekend, after all TV pretty much is disgusting which is why I took up forums.

I like many of the movies you'all have listed, some I never heard of.

I think Dances with Wolves is my all time favorite, but I have many others as well.

One many of you ahve probably never seen "The Luther movie". We bought it off e-bay have watched it at least 15 times

I love almost all movies that have nature in them, and the good Indian moves (I'm part Cherokee) and action movies in general of which Arnolds are almost always great. but he don't make them anymore  Star Wars trilogy is also great but the last set was a flop I thought, too much computer generated stuff and a very losely written story. In a pinch I'll watch almost any movie, always better then TV , except nature shows, especially under water diving shows.

Facing the Giants

That one was EXCELLENT!

There are many other exclusively Christian films I've been really impressed with, such as "Late One Night", "Flywheel", "Love Note", "Pamela's Prayer", "Step Out Over The Edge", and so on.

Some of the movies on the list make me think of funny stories.

My son was about 8 years old when The Abyss came out. My husband and I rented it and watched it after the kids went to bed. The next day (a Saturday) my son asked if he could watch the movie. I said ok but my husband real quickly said no. When I asked him later why Sam couldn't watch the movie he said because they say the "f" word. I'll be honest, I couldn't remember them saying it - but I agreed and told Sam no. Now in and of itself there's nothing wrong with that. I didn't think anything of it until a week or two later when my husband and Sam decided to have "man's night." So, off they went to the video rental store and came home with Die Hard. Now I like Die Hard - but excuse me, every third word starts with f. I've never understood my husband's rationale, but oh well.

Now - nearly 18 years later my grandson comes to spend the night. He routinely picks out a movie to watch as he's falling asleep. Typically he'll choose a Star Wars or the Princess Bride (he likes sword fights). Anyhow, one night he took Luther off the shelf and wanted to watch that. I told him I didn't think he'd like it very well, that it was sort of a grown-up movie. He looks at me most seriously and says, "Oh no Gamma, I know I'll like it, there's fighting in it." I explained that I didn't think there was any fighting in the movie, but he showed me the box to prove his point. On the back of the box there's a little tiny mace (I think that's what they're called). Obviously if there's a weapon, there's fighting.

Someone mentioned a Clive Owen movie over in the "worst" thread, and it reminded me of two other "bests" in my book:

Clive Owen/Kiera Knightly King Arthur, I like swords & horses (though maybe 300 was a bit over the top;) ) and while some other King Arthur flicks like Excalibur are pretty good I thought this one was the best of all.

Another is Antonio Banderas The 13th Warrior where he plays a muslim that falls in with some Viking warriors, lots of swords and horses.

I have no distinction between "favorites" and "bests", I'm not a movie snob:P

Dead Poet's Society was filmed in my parent's hometown. New Castle, DE - great 18th & 19th C houses. They managed to remove all the overhead electrical stuff from the streets each day and then put it back up at night. :D All for the one scene where the kid's riding the bicycle in town - maybe 10 seconds! Simon_Templar

Ech, Richard Gere makes my skin crawl.

First Knight would have been a great movie, but Richard Gere dragged it down, as it is merely a good movie.

The Jackal was also somewhat ruined by Richard Gere.. I found myself the entire time wanting to cheer for Bruce Willis and Hoping that he would kill Richard Gere in the end.

King Arthur, had GREAT potential, but ended up being merely decent.

My opinion here is probably skewed a little bit because I am a passionate follower of Arthurian lore and while King Arthur was probably the most accurate to date, the innacuracies in the movie were non-sensical and really served to twist the entire point of the stories to make them fit with a more current, politically correct view point.

For example, the picts were not native britons. They were the arch enemies of the native britons. The Picts, in fact allied with the Saxons against the britons.
The native britons did not want the romans to leave, and the romans in briton were almost all, in fact, native born britons who served in the army or the government.
The sarmatian cavalry were conscripted several hundred years before the time of King Arthur and by his time all of the descendants of the sarmatian cavalry had lived in britain for nearly 300 years. all of them were born in brittain and would upon retirement receive pention land in brittain.

Pelagius' teachings were condemned by the Pope after a lengthy debate between St. Agustine and Pelagius. However, Pelagius was not executed, instead he lived out his days somewhere in the eastern empire where his views were much more popular.

Further, the conflict between Augustine and Pelagius did not center around freedom of will vs. determinism. The debate was on the idea of original sin and wether or not a human nature was bent towards sin. Pelagius (supposedly) argued that it was possible for a person to live completely without sin but that no one other than Christ had.

My parents went to see Psycho in the theatre and then wouldn't let my brother and I go. When I finally saw it on TV, I was horrified - scared witless. I still hate taking a shower in a motel!

You read my mind. I just watched The Apostle the other night and thought it was wonderful. I cried through most of it!

And because the screenplay of To Kill a Mockingbird was soooo faithful to the book and I've seen the movie 100 x's and read the book about 25 x's - I can recite most of the lines while watching the movie! Great movie! Love Gregory Peck - what a hunk!

Heretic! Are you blind? They're adorable. They're not wookies, they're like cuddly teddy bears with button noses and hugginess extraordinaire. They're dumb. The scenario they're in makes it even more implausible. You're fighting evil incarnate ... and your only ally is a Care Bear. Lord, have mercy!

White Christmas (sorry, I'm a sucker for it :P )

I'm one of 4 daughters - my sisters and I used to walk around singing:
sisters, sisters
there were never such devoted sisters
never had to have a chaperone, no sir
im here to keep my eye on her

caring, sharing
every little thing that we are wearing
when a certain gentleman arrives from Rome
she wore the dress and i stayed home

all kinds of weather
we stick together
the same in the rain or sun
two different faces
but in tight places
we think and we act as one... uh-huh

those who've seen us
know that not a thing could come between us
many men have tried to split us up but no one can

lord help the mister
who comes between me and my sister
and lord help the sister who comes between me and my man

sister
sister
sister dont come between me and my man

we were darn good too!

sounds like an amazing story - the young man must have been really filled with a lot of self hate. Without spoiling it - can you say, did the neo-nazis know he was Jewish? (they certainly wouldn't care about any denunciation on his part - they'd only look at his ethnicity).

The people in his neo-nazi gang them admitted they'd known he was Jewish. Just such a senseless death :(

In the film, one of the others suspects, and as he gets drawn back into the faith, a couple of peoples' suspicions are aroused, but by the time the newspaper announces it, he's already brought the film to its conclusion. Won't say what it is, though.

But, really, can't recommend it highly enough.

If I may share a story here. I was in DC a couple of weeks ago visiting my sister and she told a story on herself. She routinely passes a movie theater on her way home from work and that particular theater has movie premiers several times a year. The premiers tend to tie up traffic (big surprise). Last summer Emily said she was driving home from work, it was a really nice day so she had all her car windows open. The radio was playing Diana Ross' "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Emily, being her typical self was singing along - very loudly. She said all of a sudden she realized that she was stopped right smack in front of the movie theater and there was a limousine parked next to her - and who should get out of the car but Will Smith. :o She said there's no way he couldn't have heard her singing. :o I asked her did she stop singing when she saw him - she said no, didn't make any difference. ^_^ I was a tad disappointed that he didn't sing along with her though. :sigh:

another one of my favorites was just on t.v. (have to love satellite t.v. due to all the movie channel options).

Anyhow - Mr. Holland's Opus
Always makes me think of the few teachers who so greatly impacted my life that even 34 years after graduating from high school I remember then with deepest respect.

With the exception of The Goodbye Girl, probably Richard Dreyfuss' best movie.

Guess I should put The Goodbye Girl on my list too:thumbsup:

I hadn't thought of that, but in retrospect
Apollo 13
Forrest Gump
The Green Mile

can't argue with any of them being excellent movies - diverse roles for both men in all three movies.

But, my favorite Gary Sinese role is one of his earliest. . . . I'd go all the way back to George in Of Mice and Men (my favorite Steinbeck book).

Couple of other things I respect about him - he's been married to the same woman for >25 years (almost unheard of in Hollywood these days). Also, he's one of the founders of Operation Iraqi Children - an organization which distributes school supplies, clothes, backpacks, blankets, sports equipment to Iraqi (and now other) children. OIC organizes everything and the US troops assist with the distribution. Excellent charity.

Now back to movie talk:thumbsup:

The Dark Knight. is. awesome! It's amazing, though, in that it shows how much the world has changed. Like, back when Jack Nicholson was the Joker, and Batman was considered "dark" then, but looking at it now, it was verging on cartoony. We've definitely become desensitized to "darkness" :( But it's still a fab film. Turns everyone who watches it into a 13 year old boy :D

No not really, its 2003. It's got Peta Wilson (she used to star in
La Femme Nikita) & mostly actors I don't know -
but it's a wierd movie that has like mythological characters that group together to fight an evil guy.
