i just got back from the retreat in Platina for the 25th anniversary of the repose of Blessed Fr. Seraphim Rose and it was aaaaaaaawesome. if anyone has been there they know that St. Herman's is on an ideal spot for a monastery -- up in the woods surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife and what not. very conducive to praying. there were many wonderful pilgrims, and of course the monks were great, i really enjoyed talking with them.
we celebrated a Liturgy and a Pannikhida at Fr. Seraphim's grave, and on Monday Bishop MAXIM of the Serbian Church, and another Serbian bishop, and Metropolitan JOSEPH of the Bulgarian Church served, and Metropolitan JOSEPH gave a wondeful talk on Fr. Seraphim. Throughout the weekend there were several people that spoke about his life and works and shared memories of him.
they also gave all the pilgrims free copies of the new CD of Fr. Seraphim's last public lecture from the 1982 St. Herman's summer pilgrimage, as well as a bottle of oil from the lampada at his grave (woot woot).
their Church services were pretty long but very nice, and prayerful (so basically they did 'em right). i deeefinitely want to go back.
they also have a lil' chapel dedicated to Tsar Nicholas II and his family with some rare pictures on the wall, and signed pics with the original autographs of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra.
