On my way to grab some dinner, I decided I was bored with my current library book and stopped by a library I usually don't go with to get something different. As I was browsing the Orthodox section (of course) I ran across A Long Walk to Church about history of the ROC from about 1917 to the early '90's. It wasn't until after I had checked it out and was reading the author information that I realized I knew him! He was a professor at one of the group of colleges I attended and every year took a group of students on a self-arranged trip to the Soviet Union. I joined his trip in 1991 when the focus was on religion and we were able to visit several churches, the Komi Republic, and Muslim areas.

I just looked throug my photo albumn - I wish I had taken better (or really any) notes back then. There are two churches in there that I wish I knew the location of. One is white exterior and the interior has a beautiful egg-shell blue 17th century style iconostasis. The other is a wooden church that looks okay from the outside, but the inside is in such ruins your heart would weep.

This is the one trip in my life I wish I could do again - I know at the time I didn't appreciate just what an opportunity it was.

Wow! Sounds like you had a fabulous trip then. :) That's really neat that you knew the author. What a pleasant surprise!
