Today, I checked out The Corner of East and Now by Frederica Mathewes-Green. Is this book worth reading?

I love it! It is the sequel to FM-G's "Facing East." FE is a walk through the EO year. Corner of E&W is a walk through the D/L....very nice.

I like it too. Many 'Traditionalists' poo-poo FMG but to me that is a sign that they shouldn't be trusted :)

Their main complaint is that she is not .. well .. traditional enough. My guess is that they would say the same thing to many YiaYia's and Babuskas and require artificial kneecaps at a young age. Most of them are converts still reeling from the excesses of Protestantism feel good Christianity and have yet to know what the Christian life is really about. As we all know, Orthodoxy is about being in the world, and not of the world, and it has a human side. FMG reveals much of this IMO. YMMV

Good book. Enjoy it! Share it and the other one with any Protestant friends who may have reservations about Orthodoxy, but are curious - or with those who are simply curious.

I loved both Facing East and At The Corner of East and Now. I agree with Oblio, those who tend to poo poo FMG as "not traditional enough" are likely confusing small t with large or Holy T tradition.
Peace,

That and their Liturgies usually look like a bad high school production of fiddler on the roof and they get cranky when it doesn't impress their girlfriends :)

I read Facing East. But nothing else from her, yet. I have on order from her parish bookstore her Corner of East and Now, The Illumined Heart, and some book (I forget the title currently) dealing (at least partially) with icons, it has 'icons' in the name anyway. We'll see how those go, I did enjoy Facing East though.

Yeah, thats it... couldn't think of the title and didn't feel like looking it up. ;) Knew 'icons' was somewhere in the title.

Just last night, I read The Illumined Heart. I've had it for a while, but hadn't read it for some reason.

It's a small book, basically written for non-Orthodox Christians who are looking for a "deeper relationship" with God. So of course, she's relating what Orthodoxy has always taught about theosis through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, etc. It's not at all deep, and has nothing that Orthodox Christians wouldn't (shouldn't) already know, but it is a good little "primer" for those friends and family who might be interested in living a deeper spiritual life.

Father S. and his wife and kids were there, and so were lots of other people from St. Sava. Way too much food, too! Will y'all be in your new church by next Fall? Or do you already have the room to host a big picnic where you are?

Well we certainly have room for a picnic on the new property - with or without a building! God willing, we will at least have a chapel built by next year. :crosseo:

Since y'all have claimed Labor Day, maybe we should claim Memorial Day. :)
