View Full Version : So a tornado hit my parent's back yard

Yep, yesterday my folk's house got hit by a tornado. Well, the house is fine but the back yard looked like a war-zone.
They lost six trees, one of which was nice enough to fly into the neighbor's deck and demolish it.
My parents were not home at the time, thank goodness because my mom would've gone straight into panic mode. They were, oddly enough, down at church when it happened.
We went there today as there was a bunch of the happy handy holy men from church helping them clean up, but they're not exactly young strapping bucks like my husband, so he got to haul tree trunks all day.
Have you ever watched a pastor write his sermon in a car? I think I would've been quite entertained if I hadn't had to pay attention to the road.
My parents live in Lansing, so tornadoes don't hit there very often. My son was very upset to have missed it. His first question to my mom was "It was an F4, wasn't it? I bet it was." Heh. I think he's going to be a storm chasing pastor when he grows up.
I'm just glad that they are okay, and the house was not damaged in any way, unless you count the satellite dish and since I happen to think DirectTV is a waste, well, I don't count that as damage, I count that as God doing them a favor!! :)

Hey! NFL Sunday Ticket is a gift from God! I count it as the fourth Sacrament! ^_^ ^_^
And we thank the Lord that no one was hurt in that incident at your parents house. :amen:

My mom was hardly upset that my dad couldn't watch the golf channel. ;-)
The real downside here is that my mom put a lotta love into that backyard. One of the trees (the one that destroyed the neighbor's deck, actually) had been a small enough tree that I was able to jump over in my younger years. It had grown much too large for me to jump over, but it had become a fort of sorts for my son. She did a lot of landscaping and flower planting, walking into her backyard I think was almost like walking into Eden sometimes.
So she took it rather hard, but is already formulating plans on how to rebuild her back yard to an even better frame. Rise of the phoenix and all that...

Oh boy, that weather sure was something, wasn't it? We seem to have been right in a somewhat safe zone, with the tornados to the north and south. I'm still surprised that the Tigers still played after the storm (and won in the 11th inning!).
I'm glad that your family was alright. It's always hard to see things that we enjoy be torn all apart. It can be healing to put things back together though. When our car was stolen and crashed into a telephone pole, we were so sad. We felt violated, having punks take something that was so important to us- and going through our personal belongings. Ick. But, even though she was wreaked pretty bad, it felt good to make something nice out of bad. Hopefully your mom can have a pleasant time, like our family has, putting the broken pieces back together. It's nice to see something beautiful come out of what looks like wreakage. :)

Glad to hear that your parents are ok. It sounds like your mother is already looking ahead which is good.
Actually DaRev, it is baseball that is the 4th sacrament around here.

The only REAL baseball is Little League, and that's done for the year after today. :D

Hey even the BEST artists whitewashed the occasional canvas and started over, right?
Glad to hear everyone's ok, Praise God.

Indeed it is! Football season doesn't even begin until the World Series is over. I don't care of the WS is between my two most hated teams (Yankees vs. Phillies), I'll still watch it over football.
If I want to watch grown men pat each other on the butt, I'll go to an ELCA church.

Me too. I am glad that no one was hurt. But I do like DirecTv. ;)

We have Dish Network, and it just does no good for us to have it during a storm. We can't hear what is going on, because our signal goes out. lol We need to invest in one of those weather alert radios, I think- at least until our contract is up with the Dish folks.

I'll agree that those brief and infrequent few minutes during a T-storm are a bit annoying, but the other 99 44/100 % of the time the Dish is great... and it beats the snot out of cable, especially when the lightening knocks it off for hours at a time.
No comparison.

Well, except for the other night (remnants of the storm that hit my folks) we rarely have problems with our cable. Our internet cable is great, too. Nyah Nyah!
DaRev
26th August 2007, 03:13 PM
Well, I'll bet I have even fewer disruptions with my Dish. The picture quality is better, and for the number of channels available (I really wish they'd change how they package those, both on Dish and Cable), it's substantially less expensive. And my DSL internet is just as reliable as cable internet and is also substantially less expensive (at least in the areas where I have lived).
So nyaaaa back. :P ^_^

Well, if you'd rather watch a bunch of millionaire cry babies run around a diamond, go ahead. Football is a REAL sport. Ever hear Carlin's comparison of the two?

Lansing, Michigan? That must have been quite a surprise! I've lived in tornado alley (North Texas) all of my life, and I've yet to see a tornado funnel (and I'd like to keep it that way!!!). I'm glad no one was hurt.
Hey, my priest would be a storm chaser if he had the time!

I can relate to this...lived in tornado alley in Kansas...for many years...never once saw a funnel cloud...and we'd go out on the porch to look for them when the siren went off!
Sorry about your mother's labors in the garden being damaged but very happy that your parents are safe and the house is OK.

Yeah, Rev, you've posted it at least once before!;)
Although, it's just about as timeless as "Who's on first," so post away!

Since you asked... ^_^
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!
