View Full Version : Merger?

I wonder if I should suggest this or not, but I was thinking: With the changes on the site and so many of the more conservative folks leaving, would now be a good time to consider merging our forum back into OBOB? There may not be enough traffic to support two forums anymore, and we could possibly now (with the relative lack of conservatives) get the rules changed in OBOB to be open to all. Maybe it's too soon or not feasible, just thought it might be worth discussing.
I guess if we did it, the first step would have to be to get the OBOB rules changed to be more similar to our own, and put a liberal mod or two in place. I don't meet their criteria for voting, so I can't do it, but perhaps those of you who are also members over there could consider moving things in that direction over time?

Don't know. But the steam has seemingly run out here at TLT.

I would be in favor of it if they adopt our Wiki rules in good faith.

I'd just stick around WWMC if this forum disappeared. Perhaps it's just in a lull because of the forum drama occurring elsewhere/other things going on in people's lives?

The rules of OBOB still deny any reasoanable critique to the Magisterium, i.e. Rome and the Vatican!
So how do you think any liberal position like on abortion, contraception or re-marriage of divorced people will fly on OBOB?

I don't see this forum disappearing, as we do not want to see a replay of the problems at OBOB. Many of us are still in shock over the recent changes and wonder if CF is a place worth staying. When things settle down, I would want this forum to still be here.

brother bwap: I am apoplectic over the changes...not necessarily in bad way...I've just lost my bearings.
And I was being facetious...there is no way that they would accept our Wiki rules, I know that. Nor is there any way to give Catholics the voice that we have given them here. This forum is vital to discuss the complexity and challenges that the real Church faces and how real Catholics cope.

I don't think it would be a good idea to make any big changes, but on top of that I don't think we are welcome yet. The last time we tried to get along, even the most reasonable conservatives were unwilling to let us discuss our beliefs freely.

Yeah, I think maybe in my zeal for wanting to all get along, I jumped the gun a little bit there. But maybe one day. I think eventually the new nature of the site is going to turn the tide and we'll be accepted in OBOB. Not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day. And then, when they change their rules, hopefully the wall can come down.

No harm in posting both places. OBOB will be a dead shell soon, with the constituents going off to a handful of different forums. :(

I think they will come back, eventually. This site is unique. They will never get the same graphics somewhere else.

Creating this subforum actually made OBOB worse without providing any real "good". The threads in here have been boring. Honest people do not simply seek to discuss things with like minded folks - they seek and greatly value the opinions of even their meanest, nastiest adversaries.
The creation of this forum is not the main reason that OBOB sucks today, but it did make it's contribution.

When I left work yesterday, it had been over 30 hours since a single post was made in here. Ouch. OBOB might be withering, but this place is dead.

I'm not an honest person, then, as the vitriol and immediate trouncing of any post hinting of dissent or questioning by people who think their one-line quotes are pithy keep me going toe-to-toe with the meanest, nastiest adversaries.

Don't worry, we're planning on staying separate, even if our little corner of the world is dead.

Don't worry, its not dead, and we still seem to have to go toe to toe with adversaries here, but they have to play by our rules, not theirs.
OBOB can have their little corner; it has been made clear that we are not welcome, despite some lamentation over our loss.
It will take a whole lot of positive steps before any measure of merger is considered, IMO, and I aint seen that happinin yet:P
Loki, you are a very honest and thoughtful person:) don't let anyone tell you different

Heh, most people call me inexcusably blunt.
I didn't really think it was dead. And now that DH is back in Europe, I've not much to do other than prowl these fora again.

Very true!
What do you guys who wish to rejoin OBOB think will happen once you post something against the main conservative mood in taht forum?
Do you really think that all of a sudden people will not bash you? In Germany many Catholics support a woman's right for choice in the matter of abortion! Many liberal Catholics here favour more involvement of lay people in church matters! Many Catholics here stringly favour ecumenism...
Do you REALLY thinlk Catholics like that would be allowed to voice their views in OBOB?
They would be lectured, put down and told to shape up and follow the Magisterium.
:sigh:

I could see how you would try to convince yourself of this. But this web site place (used to be at least) is not a level playing field that nutures differences of opinion or even formal debate that might deviate from forum specific rules.
And since you have not provided any substantive content, your rant becomes a blast of wind. We are not beyond indulging hecklers or even "mean adversaries" however.

It'd never happen, at least not without drama. Fortunately, in the real world, the majority of Catholic parishioners are compassionate, forgiving, and accepting of others, at least in my experience.

What is a Christian seeker?
I think that designation refers to someone who considers themselves Christian but has not yet settled on being a member of a particular church, denomination, or fellowship; and is actively looking for one to belong to.
