View Full Version : Luther-One man act

Since Luther073082 has told us about the Musical on Luther, I thought that it might interesting to see a One-man act of Luther telling an audience his life story and some of the humorous as well as the tragic points of his life. I have started to do this and it may take me a few years to work it out with all my studies. I thought that I would for the most part use the information from Roland Bainton's "Here I Stand" and James Kittelson's
"Luther, The Reformer" as well as some of the writings Luther himself penned, like "Table Talk" or his letters to his wife addressing her as Madame Pig Farmer.
Do you think something like this would be worth doing?

Do you mean going around to groups as an actor/speaker? There is a lady around here who does that as Katie Luther and she is AWESOME!! She goes through her story (dressed up in garb even) from beginning to end and it's a tear jerker, let me tell you. She gets paid for her speaking engagements and everyone is thrilled to have her. If I weren't so shy, I'd love to do something like that.
Now, if you mean something entirely different, then sorry that I'm derailing your thread!

I don't think you are derailing my thread if you are asking for clarification.
Maybe in a sense it would end up this way, but I was thinking along the lines of a stage act. I remember that Leonard Nimoy did one as Van Gogh's brother in the 80s and I have seen James Whitmore do one on both Will Rogers and Harry Truman. That's what got me thinking. Back in 2000 Time magazine came out with a list of the most influential people of the past 1000 years and 2nd on the list was Martin Luther.

This was sort of a stage act in a way since the lady was an actress type of speaker who did it in first person as if she were Katie herself. There were hilarious parts and sad parts and parts that kept us in suspense.
It's a good idea...go for it :)

Scott,
I agree, that is a great idea. In terms of formula and style, I HIGHLY recommend taking a look at Spaulding Gray's stuff, e.g., Swimming to Cambodia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094089/). (Bear in mind, the movie was originally a staged monologue.) Gray was a master of this genre.
I hope you do it!

Great perhaps you might also suggest other resources I might use besides the ones listed.
Spaulding Gray--Didn't he commit suicide a few years back? I know he used to be in movies as well.

We had a pastor do exactly that at the Missouri District Pastor's Conference int he early 1990's. He was very good, even looked a little like him. Unfortunately I can't remember who that was.

When I was in eighth grade I actually played Martin Luther in our school play.
Needless to say, that generated a little bit of controversy.

A troupe I used to run with did a melodrama based on Luther's life. It was fun, and well-received, but the serious message was buried beneath a few layers of hilarity. I think a one-man show is an excellent idea! A lot of people know "of" Luther, but don't know very much about him. Even among Lutherans, but definitely out in the world at large.

I am trying to think of who did something similar at the LWML convention in Minneapolis in '99. If I think of it, I will let you know.

Heh. It wasn't the first time I was involved in "scandal", either.
I made waves in my church! And they were good waves!
In all honesty, though, I was the only kid that they felt could do the part justice...it was a lot of lines and since the play was about Martin Luther...it was the main character. The only boy in 8th grade wasn't exactly into doing parts, either.
Ah well...at least the play was well received for the most part!

I would alter his translation of it slightly, though. (And not the use of Adonai.)
Let's see if you can figure out what I would change, add, or delete. :D

Umm I didn't tell you about the musical on Luther. I can't write a musical, I hate most musicals.
I liked this one because it was funny.

Shema Israel YHWH Elohim YHWH Echad?
Since it is the pointing on the tetragrammeton that is the same as Adonai that would be changed to match that of YHWH.

No, I was referring to the English translation. There is one word that I would add that would make it more grammatically accurate and yet not change the essence of the phrase.
