That's awesome! I must say, though, that only the Irish drink more beer than Germans. (But they dont' seem to hold it as well.) ;)

I'm not German, but I love German Hefe Weizen! I especially love König Ludwig, Löwenweisse and Weihenstephaner. Also, I looooooooove the extremely hard to get (over here at least) Fässla Bambergator, a smokey, slightly honey-ish but still fairly bitter beer.

I don't like pilsner types (from any country - they are too bitter and bland for me, I like strong tastes), but my husband likes Bitburger.

Then there's Belgian beer, and Dutch beer, but I'm pretty sure that none of you are able to get the good Dutch beers (no, Heineken, Grolsch, Amstel, etc. are not good beers, they are pilsners :P ) because good dutch beers are all microbrewed. If anyone is going to Amsterdam, I know a local Amsterdam brewery that is very good, Het IJ (they have Het IJ van Columbus, IJwit, IJndejaarsbier, Natte, Zatte, Speciale Vlo). Pubs that specialize in special beers will have it - sometimes on draught, which is even better.

Belgian beer deserves a thread of its own actually. :D It's the best. If I could, I'd move to Belgium: politer people, more disciplined pupils in school (over here it is dramatic - and I plan to go into teaching :help: ), more catholics (LOL - over here, half of the country is protestant), BETTER FOOD, THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD, CHOCOLATE, houses are still cheaper. (you see that for me, food and drink is the only thing that counts, really! :D )

I had a taste of Budweiser Budvar last time I was on the continent, and was surprised by how good of a beer that is, especially when compared with the American beer of similar name.

Rebekkah, my husband is positively a beer-snob, and insists that Belgian ales are heads above all other beers. He goes on and on about how they mature on the palate, the aromas, oxidation....

Personally, I'm very content with English Ales that are nearly meals in themselves.

LOL, I think I'm a beer snob too. :D The best Belgian beers are traditional (not commercial) gueuzes IMO, extremely sour traditional beer, sometimes with cherries in them (then they are called kriek - well, technically kriek is made of lambic, and gueuze is made of lambic of different ages) but I prefer them without - although kriek can be excellent, at least traditional kriek is.

Traditional gueuzes and krieks are hard to find and expensive, unfortunately.

Another favourite type of Belgian beer of mine is trappist, brewed by trappist monks. The best are, IMO, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Orval and Achel. I don't like Chimay trappist, and I don't care much for Westmalle.

Dos XX was my Mexican beer of choice when I was in Cancun last spring. Not a bad beer at all. (I think I like Modelo better though.)

I tried a six of Modelo last week, and it was OK, but I have to admit that I really like the Dos Equis Amber.

What's the legal drinking age in the UK, Pogue?

(Over here you'd be old enough for wodka by the way. Beer and wine: 16, stronger liquor: 18.)

Whoa. Here in the States it is 21 for all alcoholic beverages.

It's 18 for all types of alcohol. Although I have vague memories of a trip to Vienna when I was 17, and not being able to buy vodka, so compensating by buying lots and lots of wine. :tutu:

Actually, the drinking age is 5 (as long as you have parental permission, and possibly as long as it's in your own home), but the legal age to buy alchohol is 18. It's all very confusing. :swoon:

is the legal drinking age the same for all of the US? When I was younger, here is NC it used to be 18 for beer and wine and 21 for liquor...then it changed to 21 for all types of alcohol. Back then, it varied between states....so is it now 21 everywhere? I'm rambling I know and it doesn't really matter since now I'm old and can drink whatever and whenever I want! :)

kimber1

Loki

Legal drinking age in the US is set state by state with strong pressure from the federal gov't not to allow those under 21 to purchase alcohol.

Repression breeds depravity. Europeans can drink responsibly, but stupid american kids binge and binge and binge because they don't learn to drink with their parents and because it's so taboo.

Abiel
7th August 2007, 04:18 PM
We have bingeing here too- if we believe the papers we are all drunk, all of the time, and vomiting too!

Adammi
7th August 2007, 04:21 PM
It's 21 everywhere except for Louisiana. New Orleans makes such a profit off of 18-20 year-olds buying alcohol during Mardis Gras that they asked the national government if they could lower the drinking age to 18. In return the national government does not fund highway construction in the state of Louisiana.

Pogue

Here's a puzzle for you. Among my possessions is a saint medal. It is definitely male- i can see facial hair. He wears a full length robe and a hat- a bit like a beanie with long sides- or like armour without the face bit. He is holding a book, and I think a cross.

The inscription reads 'EVIS.IN.OBIIV.NRO.PRAE.SENTIA.MVNIAMVR.'

(The red bit I'm not so sure of- a bit indistinct) Any ideas who is on my medal?

Sounds like an old Egyptian Desert monk. Either that. or perhaps someone like St. Bonaface or St. Patrick?

Check this page out and see if you can find a match:

The style on those ones looks modern in comparison. My chap is quite straight laced! St Patrick seems to have a crosier. hmm.

I am trying to remember how it came into my posession. I don't know if it makes any difference but it is a relic medal.

I believe that is a classic St. Benedict Medal:

EIVS IN OBITV NRO PRAE SENTIA MVNIAMVR = "May we at our death be fortified by his presence"

"Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" (Cross of the Holy Father Benedict).

I was never taken with medals. I buy medals for Catholic friends but I never got them for myself. I still do Protestanty things like saying " For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen" in the Lord's prayer without waiting for the priest's intercession...my family thinks it's strange.

I am a chronic "loser of things". I have to be able wear things in the shower to keep track of thinks. Plus, I develop abnormal attachments to small things...and when they are invariably lost, I am saddened.

Ha!! I see that you are not a "potted plant!" I read somewhere that the Harry Potter books had to be changed for Americans because they were called "pot plants" in the British vernacular, a bad connotation.

You have much wisdom in your young years. I don't deny that I am fighting for things...change, accountability, trust, healing. One friend wrote jokingly on another site that I rarely "back down". This hit me like a sack of bricks though I knew she was trying to kid.

Priests are a measure of holiness that I aspire to...as an example, a template...to know them and savor their calling vicariously and incorporate it somehow in my weak body and mind. Perhaps when I rail about the Church, I do not reveal how I admire priests and their vocation...I am a slip of faith when I compare myself to them. Yet I calculate and plot like an animal...thinking that I am inspired like them.

Prot, that post was in no part directed at you. I've not seen you be anything but gentle with people who are uncertain and unsure and genuine in trying. You've not condemned people outright, or thrown a legal book of "things" one must do to attain Heaven. Just as a priest doesn't lay into a seeker with "Change your opinions on issues H,J,K, and make sure you do L,M,N, or you're in mortal sin," you, too, seem to focus on positive things to do rather than negative things not to do.

Great album.
when one is alive, there is no deserve to be, there is only alive or not alive. Your creator has given you breath. What do you choose to do with it?

How do you ski the K-12? Start going down hill and go that way very fast. If something gets in your way, turn.

dullsville? We will not merge with OBOB...save an overwhelming message from this forums membership. Why would you ask that?

Fish and Bread
14th December 2007, 12:15 AM
Because this place averages like one post a day, if that. I think that's Joe's point. :) Ultimately, the powers that be aren't going to want to keep this place around if it doesn't generate more traffic, most likely. If folks believe this place is important, they should start some more threads or contribute to existing ones. If they think OBOB is now basically starting to do what this place was designed to do, maybe we should start seeing if we can negotiate some merger terms that abolish the rules there that we don't find favorable.

CrusaderKing
15th December 2007, 04:50 PM

stephenc
15th December 2007, 07:13 PM
Yes, that really hit the spot ^_^

Pogue
15th December 2007, 07:16 PM
I'm just worried that when modding, I'll get the poetry confused with a PM request to edit something, so I'll be sending people verses of insane poetry, instead of requests to edit their posts. Oh dears.

15th December 2007, 07:24 PM
I can see how that might potentially upset somebody, yes.

Yes. The forum explicitly is open to Anglicans, Lutherans, Eastern Orthodox, lapsed Roman Catholics, and others. We took a really broad view of the word "Catholic" in terms of determining who could be a member so that everyone could feel welcome. :)

Thanks Pogue and Fish & Bread. :D

It is cold here...I could sure use some Glogg ( Glögg, pronounced gloog, is a high octane, hot mulled wine made with a potpourri of spices and all three of the above: Claret (red wine), port, and brandy. It is the perfect cold weather drink, warming the body from the inside out--though I have personally seen a concentrated mix blend that you can just blend with an apple juice, wine or water--but if you like to cook then here's hot to make it...)

*following recipe from http://www.hurrah.com/cookbook/glogg.html *

Swedish Glögg
Makes about 1 gallon
1.5 litre bottle of inexpensive dry red wine
1.5 litre bottle of inexpensive American port
1 bottle of inexpensive brandy or aquavit
10 inches of stick cinnamon
1 Tablespoon cardamom seeds
2 dozen whole cloves
Peel of one orange
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup blanched almonds
2 cups sugar
Garnish with the peel of another orange

So delicious...

"World of Warcraft tell us what team spirit is." This is what I often hear since I started to play wow, whether in real life (my colleagues and classmates are playing wow), or in the real life of the network (I often browse Web sites that is related to wow). I do not want to say anything that may blow the day-dreamers, but I know that, in fact, the moon in world of Warcraft is not that round, especially to the players who do World of Warcraft Power Leveling (http://www.item4u.com/WoW-EU/Power-Leveling). We all know that people who do Wrath of the Lich King Power Leveling (http://www.item4u.com/WoW-EU/Power-Leveling/WOTLK-Power-Leveling) are called farmers. I don’t want to say how much this concern with Chinese history cultures, but I have to admit that in WoW, WOTLK Power Leveling (http://www.item4u.com/WoW-US/Power-Leveling/WOTLK-Power-Leveling) lives the life of poor farmers who have nothing but their poor land in old China. They just power level the character or make money, without saying anything to players around even that speak to them. They do not need friends. If they do anything that is concerned with team, it is concerned with making money too.Farmers don’t wanna know what team spirit is, they just wanna money. To some degree, WoW Power Leveling (http://www.item4u.com/WoW-US/Power-Leveling) effaces the sense of playing MMORPG like WoW. It adds discord colors to a picture which should be very beautiful. Playing is not just playing. We should learn something from it, while this does not mean just making money. cheap Lord of The Rings Online Power Leveling (http://www.item4u.com/LOTRO-EU/Power-Leveling) .
