i know the order of the OT books in most protestant bibles are not in the same order as they appear in a jewish bible, (eg. genesis - chronicles) but can someone tell me why?
also i heard recently that our new testament is also not in the earliest running order accepted.
Can anyone shed any light on these two questions?

That is a good question.
I know that my Jewish Bible does have the books in a different order, but I am not sure of why either.
I am looking to see.
Here is one of my favorite sites about the Bible.

Here is another site I found that may have the answer - it is more complex than the dudes site though and not as fun :) http://www.biblewheel.com/canon/ChristianOT_vs_Tanakh.asp (http://www.biblewheel.com/canon/ChristianOT_vs_Tanakh.asp)

The Bible not being in chronological order can sometimes make studying the Bible difficult. That is why chronological Bibles can come in so handy. A chronological Bible actually puts the content of the Bible in chronological order. As an example, Isaiah ministered during the times of the kings. So, a chronological Bible puts Isaiah’s prophecies in the appropriate place in the books of 1 and 2 Kings. A chronological Bible also takes the four Gospels and attempts to put all of the events in order.

Thanks, Keli. This is a great idea. I will try band find this in the old-fashioned way by going to a bookshop and enquiring. (South Africa doesn't really have a culture of buying books on line using credit cards... We use banana leaves - when they aren't on our mud huts.:D )
But seriously, this is one copy I am going to search for.

Sorry, no WalMart in South Africa. Glad to hear that the South African folk are getting to Israel. South Africa has always had an afinity with Israel in many ways, both in beliefs, and also in their status in the world. A lot of our military technology is Israeli based.

I know lots of Jewish people who moved here from South Africa. Is there a large Jewish population there?
