I learned something new at the Seder this year. Well, several new things, but one in particular stood out. During the blessing over the Kiddush (which we sing every Shabbat) the Hebrew is as follows:

Baruch atah Adonai, Elohaynu, melech ha-olam, borei pâriy ha-gafen.

Translation:
Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

There is a specific word for "create" used here: Borei
Borei comes form Bereshit. The first word in the Torah.
Genesis 1:1 states rather explicitly, "Bereshit bara Elohim et hashamayim ve'et ha'arets." (translation: In the beginning G-d created heaven and earth.)

G-d created. This specific verb in Hebrew is ONLY used when G-d creates! It is never used when mankind creates. It is a very specific "creating" that only comes about by the direct hand of Adonai. I found this revelation to be astounding. Here it is, I say the Kiddush every Friday night, and I had no idea the depth of meaning behind my words.

Blessed are you.
Oh L-rd our G-d. KING of the Universe.
Who creates the fruit of the vine.

Nature. It soley belongs to HaShem to create.

Baruch HaShem,
Yafet

I thought with all the tension going on with the forums in flux it would be nice to return to some more normalized threads ;)

I liked the post, but you made an error, Borei is from Bara created, beit resh aleph. Bereishis is beginning, beit resh aleph shin yod tav.

The thought came through.

Borei comes form Bereshit. As in it has the same Hebrew root "beit resh".

Not the same word, but the same root.

So yeah... the thought came through because it was correct. ;)

For the sticklers out there, I should have worded it "is derived from" as opposed to "comes from".
