WayneinMaine's posting got me to thinking about modern sayings that some denominations use such as the one he posted "God's Plan of Salvation."

There are a lot others I've heard as well; things that wouldn't have been spoken during Jesus time (besides the language barrier LOL) or during the Reformation. I'm not saying that these sayings are necessarily wrong...just modern.

Here's another:

Don't put God in a box!

What others have you heard that you just KNOW are modern?

Christian T-Shirts that rip off secular products are another great place to find these things.

There's nothing wrong with the t's at OldLutheran. The ones I'm complaining about are the ones you see at Bereans and CBD.com LOL

This isn't a bad saying, but I am sick of hearing it from some people at church for the the past few years....over and over and over and over.

WWJD - What Would Jesus Do? That's a favorite that our pastor likes to talk about - not because that should be our guide, but that the REAL thing to say should be What DID Jesus Do? (In other words, works can't save you, only believing in Jesus as our Saviour)

That's interesting, because "What Did Jesus Do", as an ethical framework, is something I've been discussing in regards to Anabaptism vs. Evangelicalism. We take the meaning differently in the sense that we ought to be doing as Jesus did, not speculating about what He may have done in a particular situation -likely a situation in which Jesus would not have put himself in the first place.

I agree with you. When you speculate about what Jesus would have or might have done, you're going to smash into the situation your own personal bias of what is right and wrong. This is idolatry, because suddenly Jesus likes everything you like and hates everything you hate. It's no longer about what He actually did do. But why should that matter as long whatever position you're advocating now has the "Holy Stamp of Approval" that Jesus' hypothetical actions give your conclusions.

This slogan should be abandoned altogether, but it won't be, because it's such a great money maker for the "Christian" t-shirt and jewelry business as a whole. I mean as long as the money is rolling in, who cares about a little bad doctrine, right? :doh:

Ahh yes. Whatever. I LOVE that word...especially as I teach it to my 7th and 8th graders...

I hope this post of mine wasn't misunderstood - I can see where it might be - I just want to make clear that I DON't like that slogan, because it focuses on works and legalism, rather than Salvation through grace.

My problem with this saying is that I have heard it used by people who attend a nondenom, house church or don't go to church and it comes across as an "I am a better Christian than you as I don't belong to a church."

It could be a good saying but you can be spiritual without being Christian. Like new Age and the recovery, anonymous programs and pagan rites.

I often hear that phrase when I'm talking with people who claim to be Christians, but don't necessarily hold to the same beliefs that a Christian would.

I know, that's exactly how it comes across to me as well ESPECIALLY when coming from other Lutherans as it seems to come from those who are very knowledgable and said to those who are only beginning to understand our doctrine and Scripture.

Correctional soundbites just annoy me and I see them as unnecessary, harsh and unloving. I've seen the look on folks faces when such things are said to them and it was nothing but hurtful, even though that was likely not the intent.

Then when you are told this through the written word on an internet forum, it can be hard to take as you don't know how it is meant to be taken for sure.
