Inspired by the german convo in another thread, just curious to see what languages people here know. If you check one, assume it to mean you have a working knowledge of it in speech, writing, and listening, if not, please specify in the thread, eg if you can read ancient Greek but not understand it when spoken.

Hablo Espanol. De hecho, lo he hablado por once anos, gracias a la iglesia Mormona.

No hablo espanol, pero ...

yeah, that's about the extent of it. I think I can understand something along the lines of 11 years thanks to the mormon church?

Pretty good there Loki.

Ahora, si digo algo acerca de la misercordia de Dios, aun me vas a entender?

I don't know that I can vote. I know enough German to be rediculed by Rochir, RebeccaH and Loki and enough Spanglish to be rediculed by Jason.:help:

Don't feel bad Prot. Spanglish is the official language of California.

(is tempted to make up a language, just to confuse people)

*bounces up and down* I love language threads :D
I speak English, German, and a bit of Dutch but not very well
And am in the process of forgetting French and Spanish

I speak Dutch fluently ( :D ), English fairly well, German enough to get by. I didn't check French because I can understand it in written language (and can speak it a little little bit), but I can't understand Frenchmen speaking, that goes way too fast for me. I understand a bit of Italian, but can't speak it.

I don't think anyone can really speak dead languages, so I checked Latin because I can read it, not speak it. My husband is a classicist, and he can speak neither Greek nor Latin (except very clumsily - but not fluently), but he can read it very well and he can translate things from Dutch into Latin and Greek, while my knowledge is more of a one-way-traffic than his.
I know a bit of Greek too, but my Latin is better - has to do with Roman catholic liturgy - if I were an eastern catholic I bet my Greek was better.

You learned Spanish in California then?

I'm a native German speaker, am fluent in English and had Latin in school for 4 years (i.e. I have the small Latinum)

Oh and I type Typonese perfectly! ;)

Norwegian (which will also just about get you by in Sweden and denmark as well)

You learned Spanish in California then?

Yeah. They taught us most of the major verbs and how to conjugate words in the death camp at Provo, and the rest we picked up from the migrants.

English, Spanish, Latin (more or less) and Russian. I can limp by well enough to buy train tickets, cuss and order lunch in a few other languages, but I don't know that that counts :D Currently I'm working on Irish. Not because it's useful, but because I feel sort of guilty for not learning it before the old folks in my mom's family died off.
