My father was an Elder in our local Methodist Church. I am talking about the 1950's

My earliest memories as an early teenager of Sunday a.m., was of dad coming out of the 'vestry' with the Minister. The minister would ascend the steps to the pulpit, and my father would come and sit with the family.

I mention this because the faces of both these men 'shone' I recall it well. Yes, they did shine.

A while back now (90s)I was invited to preach at this same church. An elderly and now frail brother, reminded me and talked of faces 'shining' "Their faces shone" he said.

Such was the presence of Jesus. Such was the holiness of person. I still keep these things in mind as I live out my life.

I posted a message here recently by John Wesley. It was a very challenging word when it was preached. Even more challenging in the society in which we live today. No replies

We should not be ashamed of the faith of our fathers.

I rebuked a 7th day adventist as I addressed his thread on this Methodist site not long ago. I was given some infractiuon against my name and character as a result. Causing offense for Jesus.

Paul said in his letter to the Roman Church. "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.........Rom 1 v 16.

Again in Heb 2 v 1 "we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard......lest....we let them slip.

I call upon all Methodist's who have met the Saviour.....and know it. To speak out their faith. "Gossip the gospel" as the great man Billy Graham use to say.

God Bless all of the heritage of the Wesley's. May we like them......."Stand up for Jesus"

Some of us are called to edify and others need to be edified - I'm in that later group. We all bring glory to God in our own ways according to our own gifts. You keep posting though, and I'll keep reading.

What a wonderful living memorial you yourself have become of your father. I am curious which of the Methodist denominations you were raised in?

I ask because you indicated that your father was an elder but was not a pastor. I know in the 1950s Methodist Church that clergy were first ordained deacons after completing part of their seminary training and then were ordained elder after serving under appointment, so while in other denominations elders and deacons are typically lay people, in the former Methodist Church, and still in the United Methodist Church, all elders are clergy. I was not aware that some of the other Methodist denominations must have laity who serve as elders in the local church as you have described.

Thankyou for your kind remarks 'GraceSeeker'

The township (village) where we lived had around 2000 houses in total, these families made up a local and close community

We had four Methodist Churches with their congregations, all within a quarter mile of each other, situated around the 'four-lane-ends, a central crossroads.

To state the difference from one church to another would be difficult for me. But my family attended the Primative Methodist, 'The Prims' as it was known.

My father preached quite often in our own church and around the area. He was respected as an Elder but I don't think he was recognized as Pastor.

He went to be with the Lord he loved and served in 1956. I was 13 years old at the time and just beginning to jel things together in my mind.

An annual event was 'The Sing' All churches in the village took part. A parade through the streets terminating in the Park where 'The Sing' took place.

"And can it be....that I should gain....an interest in the Saviours blood?

Died he for me....who caused his pain....for me who him to death pursued.....?

Amazing love...How can it be...That Thou my God shouldst die for me?

Amazing love........

Such singing........and with such pride....such affection for the Saviour.

Senior Methodist's today, need to speak out for the truth as we know it.
