I know our homepages have a field for favourite verse, but not for why, so I thought this would be a really nice way of learning about each other a little.
And I know the entire Bible is awesome, but I think lots of people have verses that are especially close to their hearts. For example, is there one that spoke to you just when you needed to hear it, or has one helped you repeatedly, or do you just find it particularly lyrically beautiful? I'll get the ball rolling...
1 Corinthians 13:1-7 because it's just so beautiful both in sentiment and the way they're written. Also in 1 Corinthians 13, verses 11 and 12, but in the KJV only... those 2 verses are less striking when being read in any other version of the Bible.
Proverbs 31:30 because it so wonderfully says how a woman of God should be. It highlights that our value is in being in awe of Him, and society is all too ready to make women feel like rubbish if they don't meet its impossibly high standards in every way. This verse is saying women needn't fear that.
Hebrews 13:5-6 because for the first year of being a Christian, I lost a lot of friends who couldn't cope with it, and that verse pulled me through, so it'll always *always* be particularly special for me.
Proverbs 22:20 and all of Psalm 91, because those were the first two scriptures ever given to me by God, so they'll always be extraordinarily special.
Who's next? :sorry:

I John 1:5-12, because these were the first verses I committed to memory, and they helped me a lot through doubts about assurance.
Romans 8, because I was reading it when I first really realized God actually loved me.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 ~ I came across this verse when I was a teenager, going through a tough time. I thought wow God has a plan for me and its all good!! I also love how it says "I know the thoughts I think toward you" It still blows my mind years later to know that God thinks about me!! :swoon:

Well I here are two of my favorite passages of all time.
Both are from the NKJV:
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me. All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
2 Corinthians 11: 13-15
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
And of course every man's favorite group of verses .;)
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

My favorite book of the Bible is Philippians and I have several favorite verses from it...
“I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14

Looks like tbird_energizerbunny and I have something in common, besides are faith in Christ. Proverbs 3:5-6 is also my life passage from the Bible. To me, this is one of the most practical verses in all of the Scriptures which instructs and guides me throughout my daily walk with the Lord, while reminding me that I must place my daily trust in HIM knowing that HE shall set my paths straight according to HIS will simply if I do trust and have faith in HIM. :thumbsup: :amen:

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.
My father worried a lot and I tend to take after him to the point of almost having anxiety attacks and at one time heading towards thinking every little pain and hiccup I was going to be very deathly ill.There has been times I have reminded myself (and the enemy) to leave my mind alone... God desires it to be filled with his powerful love. I quote this every time I start drifting into fear and it works!

YES!, my mind, the one that gives me power over things tormenting and trying to undo me comes from Christ, I recall a few times in my life I was a step away from being undone, I was at the last end of my wits and I cried out to God and said: GOD! take it away... I give these burdens to you as a gift.. I cannot handle them any more. You know what happened? I felt a load lift off of me like a mighty crane yanking a huge stone off my chest and the gentle peace of God replaced it.
It wasn't that dramatic actually but happened over what seemed like half an hour and next thing I knew... all that spiritual opression was GONE!..... and it has stayed away because I refuse to accept it when it starts on me. It is trying now but I just tell it. you are not from God. go away!
I have a few things I wrote in my blog I felt when I was going through such times, I think you will be encouraged if you read them.

My favourite verses change with my walk with God. My favourite verse when I was a non-believer used to be John 3:16
For God so love the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in him(Jesus) shall not perish but have eternal life.
Throughout my walk with God, this verse changes and transforms many times. Currently, my favourite verse is the one in my signature.

Rev 21:1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth was gone: and the sea is now no more.
Rev 21:2 And I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men: and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people: and God himself with them shall be their God.
Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more. Nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away.
Rev 21:5 And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things new. And he said to me: Write. For these words are most faithful and true.

1 Corinthians reminded me of how much of modern literature and poetry is based on the Bible. If people knew that, I wonder if they'd pick it up more, if only to see where so much of our language and literature originated.

There are so many...and different ones at different times. But my all time favourite is:
Psalm 63
1 O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.[
Cos it speaks to me howeverr I am feeling.
Is wonderful when rejoicing - and when things are tough it reminds me of how very much He loves me, and that He will never let me go. :)

That's such a lovely Psalm :hug:
Do you ever wonder what they sounded like when they were sung back then? What tune, and what instruments they used. Where they somber, or upbeat? Did people dance? Raise their hands?
Would be wonderful to see them :)

As always...I come in around the 20th post...;)
My favorite verse is Romans 8:28...."And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
I miscarried 4 days after I found out I was pregnant with my first child. This was during the month of May many years ago. At that time, my father was helping me and my husband out with our taxes. We lived in SC and he in VA so he mailed our stuff back to us. In the stuff he had written a small letter explaining our tax stuff and he also told us how sorry he was to hear we lost the baby, and he gave me that verse as encouragement. My father is not one to get all mushy or anything like that so for him to do that spoke volumes to me.
That verse has always stuck with me, and it's a verse that we had put on my mother's grave stone.

It depends a bit on what's happening to me. Some Christians don't like my being part of a street witnessing team, so they drop little negative hints about it in their speech. Then one verse that means a lot to me is:
"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news..." (Isaiah 52:7)
In Old Testament times, when an army won a battle, barefoot messengers would be sent through the mountain villages to let people know the good news. In the New Testament, Paul uses the above verse to substantiate his preaching ministry (Romans 10:15).
For spiritual food, I like all the things Jesus taught really. I have a Bible with the words of Jesus in red so they are easy to find. I like his messages to the churches at the beginning of Revelation, because they are so authoritative, penetrating and mysterious.

I'm with JoeWill. It depends on where I am at the moment and what I'm reading at the time. I seem to love it all. :blush:
A particular favorite is the 23rd Psalm which I prayed over and over and over when I was seeking God. Jesus found me where I was at the time and now the 23rd has more meaning to me than most! :bow:

Here is one favorite I memorized long ago:
"But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, in order that I may finish my course, and the ministry which I received form the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God." Acts 20:24
It reminds me of what is most important in my life, when I lose focus, I look to Paul's focus to re-orient myself...

Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

To all my brothers and sisters
Jeremiah 30
19And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
20Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them.
21And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD.
22And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
23Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked.
24The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return, until he hath done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31>
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called.
Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;
God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are,
so that no one may boast before Him.
It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
~God uses those whom others would deem useless. He picks those useless beings up and uses them for His glory. I was the despised and useless but He chose me. :amen:
