yod - the HAND (Jesus and the Hebrew alphabet)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YOD is the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and means a HAND or the right hand, the ancient letter being a picture of such. It is a hand in motion, working, doing, making. It is the smallest of the letters and the source of three of our letters, the i the j and the y. It is the source of the word "jot" in the verse "not one jot or tittle". It is also the only letter in the Hebrew that is "suspended" above the line, leading the Hebrew thought into the idea that it is the hand of God, or of a heavenly nature, or of the future. And it is, in fact the letter added to make the future tense(imperfect).

The letter YOD begins the proper name of God - Yaweh.....yod/hey/vav/hey
and
...the name of God's Son, Jesus.....Yeshua
...the name of God's people.........Yisrael (Israel)
...the name of God's city.........Yerusaliym (Jerusalem)

Yod also begins the verb in Hebrew "to know", which is related to the word yod. Yadah (Judah) is to praise (throw up the hands)

The letter AYIN means "EYE" (to see or know) and begins the verb "to do". This reflects the Hebrew thought that to know is to DO and to DO is to know......(the letter that means to do begins the verb that means to know and the letter that means to know begins the verb that means to do)

Consider the following verses:

1Jo 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him
Exd 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Deu 5:10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
Jhn 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Act 26:20 .....that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Knowing God, and true repentance CAUSES ACTION. The word BELIEVE in the Hebrew carries with it the idea of ACTION:
0539 'aman {aw-man'}

a primitive root; TWOT - 116; v

AV - believe 44, assurance 1, faithful 20, sure 11, established 7,
trust 5, verified 3, stedfast 2, continuance 2, father 2, bring up 4,
nurse 2, be nursed 1, surely be 1, stand fast 1, fail 1, trusty 1; 108

1) to support, confirm, be faithful
1a) (Qal)
1a1) to support, confirm, be faithful, uphold, nourish
1a1a) foster-father (subst.)
1a1b) foster-mother, nurse

Isaiah 22:23 "I will drive him like a peg into a firm place, he will be a seat of honor for the house of his father."

When driving a peg we want the ground to be firm.
Here the stake (peg) is being driven into a "firm" place. The Hebrew word translated as "firm" here is the verb "aman" which literally means "to be firm or sure".

Believe (aman) is the same word here:
Genesis 15:6 "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness"

Abram was firm in his devotion to the Lord. Why did God give this promise to Abram?

Genesis 26:4,5 "I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in thr sky and I will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws (Torah in Hebrew)".

God made this promise to Abram because he was firm(he "believed) in his obedience to God.

This is one side to the KNOW/DO equation. The other side is that when you DO something then you will better KNOW it:

Hbr 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of USE(doing) have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

This quickley comes to mind, Practice what you preach, we see in Matthew 2:3 that Y'shua told the people to do whatever the Pharisses told them to do as they sat in Moses seat, but what They DID , DO NOT!

I think what he meant was that the law of the L-rd was good so they were to do it, but the Rabbinical extras that they taught, do not do for that is what is burdensome.

A friend of mine just wrote this to me, concerning Yeshua and the Pharisees:

"Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished [see also Luke 16:17]. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

"He then goes on not only to interpret individual requirements of the Law in such a way that it is clear he upholds them, but makes their application more internally demanding. Jesus is much more of a noser ‘observer’ than even the Pharisees, whose name has become synonymous with legalistic nitpicking, and with whom Jesus frequently got angry not because they respected the Torah too much, but because they followed it hypocritically, not respecting it enough. This is clear in Matthew 23:23, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others” [emphasis mine] and John 7:19, “Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”

(emphasis mine).

By the way, Yinonyavo, "iota" is Greek for "yod"

"Not one Yod shall pass away..."

You are an excellent teacher (after my heart).
Love your posts...

but the Rabbinical extras that they taught, do not do for that is what is burdensome

it isnt really the extras that they put, because alot of the things they put are good- and then again much of it is bad too.
So it is up to US ALL to determine what is halacha from what they teach and what is not.
