I am interested in constructing several olive oil lamps and am curious as to what quality of oil to use. Obviously, I use EVOO in cooking, but it is expensive. I have heard that the cheaper olive oils burn better and with less residue/smoke/etc.
For those of you who use olive oil in your lamps, please advise.
Thanks,
Clem

My current olive oil is called Botticelli.. it's the el cheapo can of olive oil that I found in the supermarket. Works Great!!
And, as it says somewhere up top.. for a wick. .buy a fresh mop head.

The cheaper the oil - the better it will typically burn. I know that sometimes we want to spend more to get something better but in this case the best burning oils are typically the lightest and the cheapest. Remember that in this case best = best burning and not best tasting.

BTW, we've been using EVOO for years. Its cheaper if you buy it by the litre at an "ethnic market" (18-25 for 3 litres). If you let it cure a little (leave the lid off ) it burns much longer. I've never had to wipe anything but dust from the icons.
We use the oil for the lamp and cooking (I use it alot, except during fasts, and we have a big family). I think 3 litres lasts about 6 weeks for both uses.
