I love chinese food ... I love chinese buffets especially.
I love the different textures, the different flavors ...
Black pepper beef, chicken with hot peppers and rice, noodles, egg rolls, egg drop soup on a cold day can't be beat.
I love fried rice ... I will never forget the first time I had fresh fried rice right off the grill.
I was messcooking on a diesel submarine the USS Salmon SS-573 back in 1963 in San Diego with a Phillipino cook.
I was only 19 then, but I'll never forget it.
He had a pot of boiled white rice and he just plopped it right on the grill, added some soy sauce, some carrots and peas. Then he broke an egg in it and scrambled it up. He put some in a bowl and gave it to me to try.
Wow! Did that taste good ... Zowie, golly gee, I was in love with Chinese food ever since.
Unfortunately the closest chinese buffet is 60 miles away.
Oh well, I just wondered if anyone else liked chinese.

Yummie!! I love Chinese food. I used to hate it when I was a kid. But now it's one of my favorites. I love kung poa chicken (really spicy) and chow mein.

I love sizzling rice soup!! haven't had that for some time now. I also love Mooshu chicken(you can have it pork or beef, too). With plum sauce and wrapped in those thin crepes. I love wonton soup, and also chicken and snow peas. Unfortunately, where I'm living now--in the ozark boondocks, you can't get any chinese food like that here. I love snow peas but they don't have them here in any of the local chinese restaurants. I guess because they're too expensive for this area. I grew up with my grandparents taking me out to eat 2 or 3 times a week and whenever we would go out for chinese food, we would always each individually pick a meal and then, we would share those meals--we never did buffet type chinese. When I first tried buffet chinese, I hated it. But, I've gradually grown to eat buffet--though I'm still picky about it. Buffet chinese is more fried stuff and not as healthy as the kind that my family would eat.
Another reason I'm not real big on buffet style chinese is because it can look gross if left out for a long time. There are some gross buffet chinese.

Didn't like it AT ALL as a kid, but my wife loves it, so I've actually discovered -- as an adult -- that I really like Chinese food.
Dry ribs, chicken balls, and some of the amazing rice-and-vegetable dishes.
Mmmm...
Now I'm hungry.

I've never been to China, but I've been to China Town in Chicago. And man oh man was that food delicious! I've only been to one restaurant there called China Cafe. It's a dim sum joint, and it's the absolute best chinese food I've ever had. I've been there three or four times, and the first time I went my two friends and I got absolutely STUFFED, dessert and all, for about $20 total between the three of us. Ever since then chinese buffets and the like have just not done it for me. I still like them, don't get me wrong. But I've never had ANYTHING like I had in China Town. If any of you live near Chicago, the next time you go there take the Red Line to Chinatown and go to the China Cafe. You won't regret it.

My first christian home fellowship was with a nice couple from Korea. They were so nice, they would invite not just me, but the whole fellowship over for dinner at 6pm and we would eat before the fellowship started at 7pm.
They had great american food like steaks, meat loaf, rice, gravy, but they loved a certain food I can't pronounce called cumshaw I think that's what they called it.
It was purple cabbage and it did not pass my smell test much less my taste test ... They sure were nice to me and I will never forget them.
I'm sure the Korean's have other dishes I would love though.

I'm afraid not, the first Chinese I ever had was sweet and sour and was seriously ill afterwards for about two days, so tend to steer clear now if I can. Think I got some kind of phobia to it, always worried I'll be ill again, never have eaten sweet and sour again.

Fort Worth rocks.
It's nothing like you'd get at a restaurant. No....I've never been to China.I went to dinner with friends once and they special-ordered an "authentic" fish with the eyes still in it-- told us to try the eyes. Hm. But we still eat Chinese-Thai-Korean all the time.
I have this strange love of the shredded seaweed in the buffets -- but if I buy it for home, I won't finish a package. It's got to be on a buffet.
Favorite south-of-China food: Sticky rice with shrimp red curry -- (sigh!)

I went to an all you can eat Chinese Buffet once and was there until 15 mins before closing.
Someone actually tunred off the lights above the buffet and started wheeling the buffet carts away as I was walking back up to it...
I was so upset I went to the little dude at the front counter and before I said a word they handed me a "doggie bag" full of food that I could take home with me...they didnt even charge me extra...
Saved that little dudes life actually...he almost got eaten...

Actually, most of what is in sushi we eat raw anyways, it's just the fish/crab/or lobster that isnt cooked/or all the way.
Sushi is Japanese, not Chinese! ;)
Then why do they serve it in Chinese restaurants? ;)

I just had an unusual crab cake at a lunch buffet (your thread inspired me).. it tasted like Bisquick wrapped around shredded pollock-crab, and fried to be cripsy. Shaped like a wheel with a crab center... no spices.
It looked like an easy dinner idea -- roll some crab into biscuit dough, slice and press it securely, and fry it up.

Most Chinese food needs to be fresh, fresh caught, fresh cooked, fresh eaten.
The only crab cakes I have ever had was in Maryland on the Chesepeke Bay,
sure was good. You can even order them at QVC ...
"If you got the money honey they got the crab cakes".
Some Chinese food is sort of delicate, is that the right word?
No msg will make you healthier too ... always check the menu.
I can't believe I used that stuff on hamburgers back in the 70's.
Now they say it causes brain damage ... yuk, yuk!
Have you ever had lobster cantonese?
Definitely need to acquire a taste for it ...
looks horrible, but it was the first authentic Chinese food item I ever ate.

I agree with T2woman. There is a great deal of salt, sugar, and MSG in most Chinese food. There are some Chinese restaurants that advertise "No MSG," and I normally will look for that information on the menu or ask the waiter.
The salt, which is in soy sauce, can be very elevated, some as much as 1,000 mgs! So be careful. Try to avoid the black sauces and ask what is in the other dishes. Most times, the waiter will be happy to find out for you.
Salt can cause high blood pressure. Sugar can raise a person's triglyceride level. And MSG, as already stated, can cause headaches, as well as other side effects.
My favorite dish is chow mein, which is high in potassium (for those who must watch their intake due to kidney trouble). To balance one's intake of potassium, take magnesium. It can purchased in powder that is made like a tea.

There are some Chinese restaurants that advertise "No MSG," and I normally will look for that information on the menu or ask the waiter. Our local health food store wrote a great article on MSG once -- they said that according to the FDA, packaging is allowed to call MSG any of many innocent-sounding names.
A package could say "natural flavors," "spices," and "soy derivatives" and have three times as much MSG without ever mentioning it.
So a restaurant owner or worker could honestly say that they didn't put any MSG in it, or see it in any pre-packaged parts of the meal ... not knowing that MSG has other names.

MSG is an irritant (excitotoxin) -- it irritates everything it touches, which is why it excites the taste buds. Then it wears down everything in its path. Researchers say that it wears down defenses for mouth and stomach cancer, by damaging protective linings.

Heron's post is worth repeating ... you have to be careful with all foods, especially the labeling.
If everyone got sick eating chinese then their wouldn't be any Chinese resturants in New York. New York is loaded with Chinese resturants from little hole in the walls to grand ballrooms with white table cloths. I spent four months on Long Island back in 1980-81. Egg drop soup for lunch would cure the blues.
If you don't see a sign that says no MSG then ask.
In California they even have a "Quick Wok" fast food right inside of the major grocery stores.
It is almost impossible to walk past that display of fried rice, egg rolls, black pepper beef, Kung po chicken, chow mein, Shrimp as big as an onion ring, barbecued ribs, etc and smell the smells, see the steaming food all for $4.95 combo plate that includes two choices of anything in the buffet (not self serve, be careful of self serve unless your first lol) plus fried rice or chow mein and you can even say half and half on those two items. Egg roll is extra, but you only live once anyway.
Rasberry iced tea or a Dr Pepper and you've got some good feelings in your tummy for an hour or more.

If everyone got sick eating chinese then their wouldn't be any Chinese resturants in New York. It's in most chain restaurant food too - not just fast food -- especially ones that prepare their food before delivery.
Here's a useful tidbit...
http://www.msgtruth.org/whywe.htm
MSG is a salt of the amino acid - Glutamic Acid (glutamate). One (mono) sodium atom is "stuck" to the amino acid glutamate. Glutamic acid is detected by the taste buds as a simple way to signal the presence of protein in a food.
MSG stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. So many diets these days are concerned about the Glycemic Index of foods, and yet none of them address the fact that MSG and free glutamic acid stimulate the pancreas to release insulin when there doesn't even have to be carbohydrates in the food for that insulin to act on.
The food industry has found their own "anti-appetite suppressant". It's a convenient way to keep consumers coming back for more. The blood sugar drops because of the insulin flood. And you are hungry an hour later.
http://www.msgtruth.org/whatisit.htm
So... think about this recent panic about obesity in America.
Even innocent products like seawead and flour contain msg... fresh produce sprayed with Auxigro in the field.
http://www.msgtruth.org/cropspra.htmWhat packaged non-perishable foods can you name that don't have MSG in them?
