View Full Version : How do you define the phrase: "Spirit Filled"?

When I say Spirit Filled, I mean "Baptised in the Spirit". It may not be proper, as we all recieve the Holy Spirit when we are saved, but my family has always called us folk who've been Spiritually Baptised, Spirit Filled.

What does it mean to you?

I agree with your post 100%, LW. :)

That's pretty much how I've always viewed it too.

I'm not sure anymore if Baptism of the Spirit is a separate event from the initial salvation or something later or what. There are a lot of differing viewpoints on that.

Basically, I don't really think it's as formulaic as we would like it to be. So, I let God deal with the details.

But, yeah, Spirit-Filled to me means Spirit baptised.

This is how I feel, too. It's a big reason why I felt I couldn't join the IPHC that I like so much...well that and I'm being called elsewhere.

Again, I'll be the odd man out. *laughs*

I think of "Spirit-filled" as striving, in God's grace, to be an open conduit to the Spirit's work, rather than a barrier to it -- to being open to His promptings and leanings, even when it seems strange to me. To pray every day that He use me, and give me opportunities to do His work.

For instance, I haven't been to a formal worship service where tongues were spoken since college (over 20 years ago). I have never "been given a word" of prophecy in the way I hear many charismatics speaking of... but I listen to the Spirit's promptings, and sometimes say surprising things... which turn out to be EXACTLY what the person needed to hear at the time. When I sing in church, I don't sing in tongues, for that would not be edifying to the body which wouldn't understand it. But time and again, people come up to me to tell me how much what I sang and how I sang it touched them... and I know that's the Spirit's work, not mine.

I think sometimes that with all the emphasis on the more miraculous and emotion-laden of the charisms, like tongues and healing, we forget that there are many other gifts of the Spirit listed, like faith and words of wisdom, and the greatest of all, love.

Hey Synger! Thank you for your input!

I know from your Lutheran background why you would view it as such, and praise God that you do believe and allow Him to use you with whatever gifts the Holy Spirit bestows.

Be Blessed!

I believe that the Holy Spirit indwells us at the point of salvation and that the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" is a stripping away of self that allows, or gives permission, for Holy Spirit to be more active in our lives. We don't receive more of the Spirit, just work with less of ourselves.

Awesome way to put it!! That's exactly what it is. A "stripping away" or actively surrendering our lives to allow Holy Spirit to flow through us more powerfully through His gifts. WOOHOOO!!!

Spirit filled can mean your so Holy you can't touch anything of this world ... you are frozen in time so to speak.

Hands raised to God, a song in your heart, beaming, face shinning like the noon day sun.

You know Spirit filled ... :holy:

I like the OP, but would add that we are to be continually filled and re-filled with the Spirit in our daily lives.

So, receive the Spirit at salvation, but get filled and re-filled many times on the journey from then on.

FOr me , it simply means that the Spirit works a little differently in "Spirit filled" folks than others . Differently - not better .

Let me be another odd man out!

There came two major revelation that John the baptist preached.

1. Jesus was the Lamb of God that took away the sins of the world

2. Jesus is the baptizer of the Holy Spirit!

The Holy Spirit does a work in us through the washing of the water of the Word of God in salvation!

The Holy Spirit overflows us spirit soul in body when we are filled, baptized with the Holy Spirit!

Acts 11:15 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning.
16 "Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, 'John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Jesus is still the baptizer of the Holy Spirit which is that endowment from on high.

I don't fit anywhere but that how I see it!

Bruce, you aren't the odd man out. I absolutely positively 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt believe with my whole being that Jesus Christ is the only baptiser of the Holy Spirit, as you so wonderfully pointed out. Thanks for posting!
