I did it at school up to O-level. Our course was a Scottish course called Ecce Romani. My kids do the New Cambridge course.

I can (very basically) follow along with a Latin mass. I wouldn't be able to use the words in any context outside of the mass though. Would love to learn.

As a fifth grader in a pre vatican II Roman Catholic School I knew the Latin Mass responses. Our Pastor was fond of leading the Marion Rosary in latin, and i once wrote
"Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis, ad laudem et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque nostram, totiusque ecclesiae suae sanctae." ***

one thousand times before I was allowed to go home after mass for mispronouncing "Suscipiat"

Proper Roman pronunnciation is "shoe-ship-ee-ot"

*** "May the Lord receive this Sacrifice from your hands to the praise and glory of His name, for our good, and that of all His holy church."

I know latin fairly well, but the person in STR I'd recommend talking to would be SimonTemplar.

This question might get a wider array of responses and suggestions on OBOB, if you are comfortable making this inquiry there as well as here.

My kids do the New Cambridge course.

How does that work? Expensive? How are they progressing?

In the US the standard Latin textbook is Wheelock's Latin. I also highly recomend "A comprehensive guide to wheelock's latin".

Wheelock is a great text book, but it just tells you the rules and the vocabulary etc. The comprehensive guide goes into alot of great detail as to why things are the way they are in Latin.

One of the great things about Wheelock is that it makes extensive use of actual excerpts from ancient latin writings. So the language you see and learn is real, as it was originally written and used.

These, of course, are "classical" latin as opposed to ecclesiastical latin. However, the main difference between the two is pronunciation.

I read some reviews of Wheelock's Latin which were fairly negative.

really?

I thought it was well laid out, concise. The only thing thats weak in wheel lock is he doesn't explain why things are the way they are.. he just lays the rules out and thats that.

I think its very well organized, but could do with a bit more in depth explanation.

However, if you get the companion book I listed, it covers that aspect very well. That book was great and did alot to increase my understanding of how latin developed and how language in general tends to work etc.

Wheelock is pretty much the standard in the US. I'm not familiar with what English schools use, but every college course I've seen over here uses wheelock.
