Pastor says that hymns are the best devotions in the world and I am inclined to believe her not because she's my pastor, but because I find that to be true myself. Since we are Methodists have Methodist roots, the importance of hymns is nothing new to us and therefore I pose this idea to the Parish. In the spirit of the CF Prayer challenge, I propose we read one hymn each day as a Devotional in addition to Our Daily Bread.. The time of day does not matter. I declare you will be edified if you study the hymns of the church because they are full of theology. So, who is up for the challenge? I know I am.

Will you do it with me , I'd like to compare notes. Well, not notes just thoughts. Hey maybe each day a hymn can be posted and each of us can comment on it like we do with Our Daily Bread. What do you think?

Sure, count me in! I have limited time in the a.m., but I'll be able to comment in the evenings for sure!

Like I said: time doesn't matter. Just a daily hymn is good. Yay, the first one. Awesome! Ok, I'm going to post the first hymn right now. :)

1 O FOR a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer's praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of his grace!
2 My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honours of thy name.
3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease; 'Tis music in the sinner's ears, 'Tis life, and health, and peace.
4 He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.
5 He speaks, and, listening to his voice, New life the dead receive, The mournful, broken hearts rejoice, The humble poor believe.
6 Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind, behold your Saviour come, And leap, ye lame, for joy.
7 Look unto him, ye nations, own Your God, ye fallen race; Look, and be saved through faith alone, Be justified by grace.
8 See all your sins on Jesus laid: The Lamb of God was slain, His soul was once an offering made For every soul of man.
9 Awake from guilty nature's sleep, And Christ shall give you light, Cast all your sins into the deep, And wash the 'thiop white.
10 With me, your chief, ye then shall know, Shall feel your sins forgiven; Anticipate your heaven below, And own that love is heaven.

What a great Idea.

I was wondering..... Our church used both the Methodist Hymnal and the Faith we Sing. do your churches use the FWS also?

Kryzoz
4th July 2007, 12:46 AM
AME has its own Hymnal with Wesleyan and other denomination selections as well as a host of spiritual and traditional songs. As far as I know we do not use either the Methodist Hymnal or Faith We Sing, but I'll find a link just for you:
http://www.hymnsite.com/fws/index.shtml
Note: We AME's ought to be ashamed of ourselves for not using it. That is such a good hymnal. My gosh

I hope you don't mind. This is one of my favorites:

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.
I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
[originally …let us die to make men free]
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

I love the Battle hymn!

I grew up in Southern California where it did not have the same conotation that it does here in the south. Our Current leadership is very PC and it has not been sang in church during this Administration. Several in out congregation have mentioned that they miss it.

Father, Above the Concave Sky

Father, above the concave sky, Enthroned in light profound. At Thy command the lightnings flash and thunders roar around.
O who can see the beaming sun, The smiling moon at night, The snowy clouds, The countless stars, Enrobed in dazzling light.
And yet refuse to sing Thy praise in sweetest notes of love, Or echo to angelic lays, who fill the worlds above?
When e’er I tread the blooming plains And pluck the fragrant flower, The luscious fruits, The yellow grains, I see Thy matchless power.
What moves on earth, or wings the air, Or swims the swelling sea, Is but a ray of light to point Immortal man to Thee. AmenWritten by D.A. Payne

Finally, A New Hymn

Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, thou my true word
I ever with thee, thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I thy true Son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Be thou my battleshield, sword for the fight
Be thou my dignity, thou my delight
Thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tower
Raise thou me heavenward, O power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and thou only, first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, after victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.

And Another....

I Want Jesus to Walk with Me

I want Jesus to walk with me
I want Jesus to walk with me
All along my pilgrim journey
I want Jesus to walk with me

In my trial, Lord, walk with me
In my trials, Lord, walk with me

When the shades of life are falling
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me
In my sorrow, Lord walk with me
In my sorrows, Lord walk with me
When my heart is aching
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

In my troubles, Lord walk with me
In my troubles, Lord walk with me
When my life becomes a burden,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

A new one....
Thy Faithfulness Lord
1.THY faithfulness, Lord, Each moment we find, So true to thy word, So loving and kind! Thy mercy so tender To all the lost race, The vilest offender May turn and find grace.
2 The mercy I feel To others I show, I set to my seal That Jesus is true: Ye all may find favour Who come at his call, O come to my Saviour, His grace is for all!
3 To save what was lost, from heaven he came; Come, sinners, and trust In Jesus's name. He offers you pardon; He bids you be free; "If sin be your burden, O come unto me!"
4 O let me commend My Saviour to you, The publican's friend And Advocate too, For you he is pleading His merits and death, With God interceding for sinners beneath.
5 Then let us submit His grace to receive, Fall down at his feet And gladly believe: We all are forgiven For Jesus's sake: Our title to heaven His merits we take.

Not all the Blood of Beasts

1 NOT all the blood of beasts On Jewish altars slain Could give the guilty conscience peace, Or wash away our stain.
2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb, Takes all our sins away; A sacrifice of nobler name, And richer blood, than they.
3 My faith would lay her hand On that meek head of thine, While as a penitent I stand, And here confess my sin.
4 My soul looks back to see The burden thou didst bear When hanging on the accursed tree, And knows her guilt was there.
5 Believing, we rejoice To feel the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And trust his bleeding love.

Yay communion....
There is a fountain
There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
Be saved, to sin no more, be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lies silent in the grave, lies silent in the grave;
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me!
’Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
To sound in God the Father’s ears no other name but Thine.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
Refrain
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
Refrain
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
Refrain
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Just A Closer Walk with Thee
I am weak, but thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I'll be satisfied as long
as I walk, let me walk close to thee.

Refrain:
Just a closer walk with thee,
grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
daily walking close to thee:
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

2. Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee.

3. When my feeble life is o'er,
time for me will be no more;
guide me gently, safely o'er
to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore.

Oh, I know the Lord, I know the Lord,
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me.
Oh, I know the Lord, I know the Lord,
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me.

1. Did ever you see the like before?
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me;
King Jesus preaching to the poor!
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me.
(Refrain)

2. Oh, wasn't that a happy day
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me;
when Jesus washed my sins away!
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me.

3. __ Some seek the Lord and don't seek him right;
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me;
they fool all day and pray at night,
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me.

4. __ My Lord's done just what he said;
I know the Lord's laid his hands on me;

I am trav’ling to a city
Where the light is never dim,

It is sweet to walk with Him.

Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown,
when thou camest to earth for me;
but in Bethlehem's home there was found no room
for thy holy nativity.
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
there is room in my heart for thee.

2. Heaven's arches rang when the angels sang,
proclaiming thy royal degree;
but in lowly birth didst thou come to earth,
and in greatest humility.
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
there is room in my heart for thee.

3. The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest
in the shade of the forest tree;
but thy couch was the sod, O thou Son of God,
in the deserts of Galilee.
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
there is room in my heart for thee.

4. Thou camest, O Lord, with the living Word
that should set thy people free;
but with mocking scorn, and with crown of thorn,
they bore thee to Calvary.
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
there is room in my heart for thee.

5. When heav'ns arches shall ring and its choir shall sing
at thy coming to victory,
let thy voice call me home, saying "Yet there is room,
there is room at my side for thee!"
And my heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus,
when thou comest and callest for me.

Behold the Glories of the Lamb

Behold the glories of the Lamb
Amidst His Father’s throne.
Prepare new honors for His Name,
And songs before unknown.
Let elders worship at His feet,
The Church adore around,
With vials full of odors sweet,
And harps of sweeter sound.
Those are the prayers of the saints,
And these the hymns they raise;
Jesus is kind to our complaints,
He loves to hear our praise.
Eternal Father, who shall look
Into Thy secret will?
Who but the Son should take that Book
And open every seal?
He shall fulfill Thy great decrees,
The Son deserves it well;
Lo, in His hand the sovereign keys
Of Heav’n, and death, and hell!
Now to the Lamb that once was slain
Be endless blessings paid;
Salvation, glory, joy remain
Forever on Thy head.
Thou hast redeemed our souls with blood,
Hast set the prisoner free;
Hast made us kings and priests to God,
And we shall reign with Thee.
The worlds of nature and of grace
Are put beneath Thy power;
Then shorten these delaying days,
And bring the promised hour.

The cross, it standeth fast—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Defying every blast—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
The winds of hell have blown,
The world its hate hath shown,
Yet it is not overthrown—
Hallelujah for the cross!
Refrain
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah for the cross;
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
It shall never suffer loss!
It is the old cross still—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Its triumph let us tell—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
The grace of God here shone
Thru Christ, the blessèd Son,
Who did for sin atone—
Hallelujah for the cross!
Refrain
’Twas here the debt was paid—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Our sins on Jesus laid—
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
So round the cross we sing
Of Christ, our offering,
Of Christ, our living King—
Hallelujah for the cross!

SIMPLE GIFTS

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free.
'Tis the gift to come down
where we ought to be.
And when we find ourselves
in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley
of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend
we shall not be ashamed.
To turn, turn
will be our delight,
'Till by turning, turning
we come round right.

We sang this one in church today. It's a new favorite of mine:

Lord, you have come to the lakeshore

1. Lord, you have come to the lakeshore
looking neither for wealthy nor wise ones.
You only asked me to follow humbly.

Refrain
O Lord, with your eyes you have searched me,
kindly smiling, have spoken my name.
Now my boat's left on the shoreline behind me;
by your side I will seek other seas.

2. You know so well my possessions;
my boat carries no gold and no weapons;
But nets and fishes -- my daily labor.

3. You need my hands, full of caring,
through my labors to give others rest,
and constant love that keeps on loving.

4. You, who have fished other oceans
ever longed-for by souls who are waiting,
my loving friend, as thus you call me.

WHEN I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ, my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

In Thee, O Spirit, true and tender,
I find my life as God’s own child;
Within Thy light of glorious splendor
I lose the earth-clouds drear and wild.
Within Thy love is safe abiding
From every thought that giveth fear;
Within Thy truth a perfect chiding,
Should I forget that Thou art near.
In Thee I have no pain or sorrow,
No anxious thought, no load of care.
Thou art the same today, tomorrow;
Thy love and truth are everywhere.

No compromise with evil shall be our battle cry,
For God and right must conquer, and sin and wrong must die;
Unflinching we are standing, uncompromisingly,
Beneath the flag of holiness forever we will be.
Refrain
No compromise, no compromise,
This shall be our battle cry,
For God and right we will boldly fight,
We will keep the standard high.
No compromise with error, for Bible truth we stand,
Let none remove the landmarks erected by God’s hand.
With loyalty our watchword and faith in Christ our stay,
We’ll bravely storm the forts of sin and thro’ Him win the day.
Refrain
No compromise with worldliness, no yielding to the wrong,
No lowering the standard that’s stood thro’ ages long;
With Jesus as our Leader, His Spirit as our Guide,
We’ll firmly stand for righteousness whatever may betide.

Come sing, my soul, and praise the Lord,
Who hath redeemed thee by His blood;
Delivered thee from chains that bound,
And brought thee to redemption ground.
Refrain
Redemption ground, the ground of peace!
Redemption ground, O wondrous grace!
Here let our praise to God abound!
Who saves us on redemption ground.
Once from my God I wandered far,
And with His holy will made war;
But now my songs to God abound;
I’m standing on redemption ground.
Refrain
O joyous hour! when God to me
A vision gave of Calvary;
My bonds were loosed—my soul unbound;
I sang upon redemption ground.
Refrain
No words of merit now I plead,
But Jesus take for all my need;
No righteousness in me is found,
Except upon redemption ground.
Refrain
Come, weary soul, and here find rest;
Accept redemption, and be blest;
The Christ who died, by God is crowned
To pardon on redemption ground.

Take my life and let it be

Take my life and let it be
yours for all eternity.
Take my moments and my days;
let them sing your endless praise.

Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of your love.
Take my feet and lead their way;
never let them go astray.

Take my voice and let me sing
always, only for my King.
Take my lips and keep them true,
filled with messages from you.

Take my wealth, all I possess;
make me rich in faithfulness.
Take my mind that I may use
every power as you shall choose.

Take my motives and my will,
all your purpose to fulfill.
Take my heart it is your own;
it shall be your royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at your feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
yours for all eternity.

Joy to the World
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate thread to say hi or not, but this Sunday I'm planning on making my first visit to the local Nazarene church. I have two reasons for going to this church. One, is that it is part of a school assignment. Two, is that I have not been to a church in three years. It's been a long time only because someone from another church tried to force their religion not only onto me and my husband but the whole community into which we live.

I'm not sure what to expect when I go visit the church tomorrow but I'm hoping that the services will be calmer than the charismatic churches that I have been to.

If this has been an inappropriate post for this thread I'm sorry. I just didn't want to start a new thread for my post.

Hi there!

Why not start a new thread? Otherwise, we might not see it. Don't worry, we don't bite, and I'm sure you'll get some good insight about the Church of the Nazarene.

I've visited a CotN and if was a very pleasant experience. Not much different from the Methodist Church I attend. I hope you enjoy it!

Peace and God Bless,
Laura

Don't think it is a "Methodist" hymn but it is my absolute favorite Christmas hymn:

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angels' voices!
Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born;
Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.
He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King, Behold your King.

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord!
O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
