View Full Version : Is it wrong to WANT to be a minister?

I was wondering if it's wrong for me to want to be a Pastor. God has not yet revealed to me what He wants me to do with my life and I always kind of thought that going into ministry is something that you should be lead by God to do, no something you just do because you want to. So is it wrong for me to have this desire? Or even to have the thought of this being a possibility? Thank you. God bless.

absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be a pastor. Do your research about it, what it requires in terms of training, salary (as in does it pay enough to feed you), etc

Pray a whole bunch about it and then listen to what God tells you.

You might even go through bible school and then find out that it is not what God really wants you to do. Not a problem, and certainly not wasted time or effort.

No time spent studying God's word is wasted.

Good luck in your search.

Nothing wrong at all. When I was younger I always had that desire, then as I got older circumstances in my life literally shoved me in that direction. Now I am planting a church in the same area that I grew up in. It might start as a desire but it could be God leading you in that direction. Just keep your ears and heart open for the will of the Lord, He'll guide you. God bless!

You know a song comes to mind and is SO right on.. your desire is the confirmation that the destination is there he wouldn't put in your spirit if it wasn't going somewhere. ALL good things come from God. Who do you think put that thought there? But pray about it ask him to confirm it and he will. Like one day I was wondering if me wanting to be a preacher.. some the same? So I prayed lord you said you will comfiim this out of the mouth of two or three so if you want me to be a preacher please comfirm this. So and it does not always happen this fast but.. that night I went to church and three people came up to me and said (and I had been going to that church for years and they NEVER said anything like this) you know.. you should be a preacher. DONT look to MAN look to Jesus.

No, it's not wrong. How are you supposed to know you are being led by God to any profession if you don't first have a feeling that you want to do something. Now, Mr. (to the thousandth power) Todd Friel was asked this question on the Way of the Master podcast recently and his answer was along the lines of, if you feel absolutely that you will never ever be able to do anything else and that ministry is the only thing you could ever see yourself doing and you need to do it more than anything else, then yes you should be a minister. I have to agree with this position. Of course this desire should be the driving force behind any profession that we would like to pursue. However, most of us end up in jobs we would never normally choose for ourselves. Good luck. Have you considered the chaplaincy at all?

Even though God uses us no matter what our profession may be, don't wait to follow what you think your calling is. As you get older the regret grows!

Clearly not wrong... in fact it might be very right!

Certainly God won't keep you hanging for an answer.

One thing I remember from the bible. God, in responding to the question "how long must I try/work something before I give it up on it?"
His answer was 3 years... that will give you the time you need to truly evaluate all aspects. Then He says... stay ONE MORE YEAR... just to make sure. After 4 yrs of nothing... THEN you can quit with clear conscience!

You gotta love the rational of God!

God is not going to flat out appear in front of you and tell you to become a Pastor.

But..God is talking to you. He speaks to all of us, but we need to learn to recognize His voice. It may a thought in our own head, or the words spoken to us by a friend or a stranger or the way the clouds are formed in the sky. Keep listening! Read about God speaking to Samuel the prophet: I Sam 3

27Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 12

Paul tells us that we must desire the greater gifts such as Apostles, Prophets.....etc, allthough Pastor is not included in this list i do believe it to be one of the greater gifts (ephesians 4), so no it is not wrong to desire this gift.
But i would make sure that your motives before God are right, that is that you want this gift to serve God and to serve others, to lay your life down in the truest sense and put others before yourself at all times, "for the first shall be last and the last shall be first," you (if this is what God is calling you to) are there to serve Gods people.......to many times I see it the other way round.

It is the good desire. Only play fair.

A desire to be a pastor is a very good thing. However, it is not the only thing. There have been many people who, although gifted by God to be a pastor, have not WANTED to be one. Some of them remained stubborn, others obeyed God's call even though it was difficult for them to bear the burden.

I would find confirmation for this. As an example, have other people told you that you ought to be a pastor? As you pray, if it's God's will for you to be one, you will find confirmation such as the above-mentioned example. Or perhaps he'll make the desire even stronger.

I'll just keep on praying. I had originally planned to be a police officer once I leave the military but I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. A couple of people have told me that they thought I should be a pastor but that was years ago. We'll just wait and see what God wants.
