The most important thing I can tell you is that God loves you and wants you to know Him in a personal way and listen to His Word. The psalmist said, "As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless" (Psalm 18:30 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=NKJV&passage=Psalm+18%3A30)). These words are just as true today as when the psalmist wrote them almost 3,000 years ago.

But how does God communicate with us? He doesn't do it in a vacuum—by waiting for us to empty our minds, and then implanting some new thought or feeling into our minds. After all, if you did somehow empty your mind of all its stray thoughts, how would you know that your next thought was from God? The truth is, you wouldn't. It might be just another stray thought bubbling up from your unconscious, or even something from the devil.

Instead, God has already spoken to us in words we can understand—and those words are in the Bible. Do you want to know what God is like, and if you can know Him personally? Turn to the Bible, and ask God to show you Himself through its pages.

I suggest you begin in one of the Gospels (such as John), because it tells you about Jesus, who (the Bible says) was God in human flesh—the Living Word. He came down from heaven to take away our sins, and by receiving Him into our hearts we become God's children forever. Turn to Jesus, for only He can satisfy the hunger you have in your heart for God.

Not a useless thought at all. On the contrary, it is a back to basics statement that puts things in perspective. God loves us.

I agree, Bible verses aren't useless.

yes, we need to be reading our Bibles, I recommend every day bible study somehow. I like listening to Bible such as on walkmen tapes or online with www.biblegateway.com and then we must be doers and also share this bread of life with a lost and dying world

Basic teachings are something that ALL Christians-- young and old, new and strong faithed--- need. While alot of us could tell you every part of the Gospel we should still spend more and more time reading them. New things always pop out at you :)

Useless thoughts are like idle words which Jesus mentioned:

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned" Matt 12:36-37

As I see it there is a difference between thought and word.

No one can know our thought.....we alone can know. Words however can be harmful.

I am pleased that my thoughts ......incorrect, sinful at times maybe, are only thoughts.

Cleanse me from all sin O Lord...I pray. Help me to think useful, not useless, wandering thoughts.

OrchidAngel you are so right about new things popping out when rereading. I find that is the case every time I read my Bible.

About thoughts vs. deeds: There is a song that goes, "Faith without works, like a song you can't sing... it's about as useless as a screendoor on a submarine"

If someone wants to know God in a personal way, in addition to personal testimonies of people alive today I would suggest they read the book of Acts which is about people getting just that.

Remember that at the end of the gospels the disciples still forsook The Lord, they hadn't "begun in the Spirit" until Pentecost. The Spirit brought to remembrance all that Jesus had said to them after they received Him, and made it real.

God does know our thoughts as well as our words. And...a thought can be harmful:

"And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?" Matt 9:3-4
"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." Matt 5:28
