My mother in law was wondering what that meant. She knows what the scriptures say about the board about Jesus's head while he was on the cross. She said that she sees that a lot on crosses and pictures of crosses and was wondering what it meant. She asked me to ask you guys.

The letters are for Latin (I think) words - I don't know all of the specific Latin words, but it translates to: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews".
Jesus is something like "Iesous" , and King is "Rex" I think.

Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum
It means, as was said, Jesus of Nazareth (or the Nazarene) King of the Jews.
It is the abbreviation of the sign which Pilate wrote and put above Jesus' head on the cross.

INRI is an acronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym) of the Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language) phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates to English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) as: "Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus) the Nazarene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazarene), the King of the Jews (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_Jews)". It appears in the New Testament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament) of the Christian Bible in the Gospel John (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John) (19:19). Each of the other accounts for Jesus' death have a slightly different sign: Matthew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Matthew) (27:37) "This is Jesus the King of the Jews"; Mark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Mark) (15:26) "The King of the Jews"; and Luke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Luke) (23:38) "This is the King of the Jews".
