I wish I could say some version of Greek and Hebrew texts, but I am not that gifted. I use the JPS, the REB, and the NRSV most often, but I love the KJV. I understand that the scholar Robert Alter likes it. My church uses a variety of translations in worship. I like the Scholars New Testament. I have a high regard for Robert Miller and those who worked with him on that translation. I own NAS, JB, NJB, and NIV NT (which I love). I refer to them fairly often. I notice that many people use the NIV in Sunday school. My devotional Bible is the REB. I have an old copy of the NIV NT that I have worked over and over. :sigh:
Often, I use study Bibles. I need the help that they provide. I use mostly Oxford Study Bibles for the REB, NEB, NRSV, RSV, JPS. I also use a Harper Study Bible NRSV and the annotated version of the NJB. These are supposedly free from denominational bias, but they have their own prejudices. I like other study Bibles but I don't own any of them. :help:
One of my friend studies Hebrew and benefits greatly from it. I have struggled with Greek. Sometimes a good word study opens a text in splendid ways. I regret my lack of better linguistic skill:
Translators have difficulty translating Greek into English. English is a very vague language were Greek is very precise. There are not huge differences but reading the Bible in English is like watching black and white TV were reading Greek is like watching high resolution color TV.

Aaargh... Now you have all confused me. English is not my first language. The bible I read is the Dutch Wilibrordus translation.
Recently though, since I talk a lot with Christians for whom English is the first language, I have been considdering to buy myself an English bible as well. Trust me... when you translate biblequotations from Dutch to English yourself, right on the spot, you NEVER get the right result. *L*
Language difficulties won't really be a barier in English, since I do read Shakespeare and study Chaucer. But I was hoping to find some enlightenment here as to which English translated Bible would be a good choice. So far... I've only gotten more confused.

I didn't vote b/c I don't think there is a best version. All are useful when studying the Bible to see how the different committees interpreted the original. It all depends what you are looking to use it for...serious study or just a general understanding of the message.

The Revised English Bible is excellent. It is a dynamic translation. It uses the best form of speech to translate meaning. I find it an immensely helpful Bible translation. Almost all British church groups had a hand in doing the translation.

I really like the New Living Translation. It has all kinds of cool things in it. Like references to like, explain certain verses and stuff. And it compares verses in, for example, exodus taht are sooo old, to times such as today. It's amazing!

It's horses for courses really, and depends on how you interpret the word "best". I use the ESV at church, but it took me a while to adjust to its phrasing after being brought up on the NIV. I also have the NKJV as the default translation on my software package. However I don't really have a preference as to the best of them.

I was brought up with the Revised Standard Version - and then to the New International Version - which I prefer - It came out in the late 1970s and is now the most popular translation - Dont like the New English bible - or the New Living translation - cannot get my head round it
To me there are far too many translations - one for this set of people and one for another - Just leave the word of God alone -

LOL - While I agree that there are truly a plethora (and certainly likely too many) of "translations" (I am particularly "taken" by the Reader's Digest Version and the Femininst Bible :sigh: ), by the strict approach of that view we should all either be learning Hebrew and Greek or still have a learned clergy that diseminated the "truth" to the laity ;)

undefined   I read from many translations and paraphrases. From my limited time on this site, it seems some have not understood the difference between the two. It would be good if that is you if you would ask a leader you respect the differences between the two.
For study I heavily rely on NASB due to it's accuracy. It is simply the most acuate translation from the Alexandrian steam. The issue of which one should read or which is the best translation is largely answered by which steam you drink from. The Byzantine or the Alexandrian.
The Byzantine was used primarily by the translators of the KJV because it was much earlier put together. The Alexandrian was used by the NASB because it was then able to use the many thousands of scripture fragmenst unearthed by archeologist since the Byzantine was put together. I've always believed it is wiser to use the larger pool of manuscripts rather than the smaller. Those that believe the 1611 KJV is the only version that is blessed by God have to wrestle with it's hundreds of corrections since it's original arrival. Anyway I use the NASB for study and many others as I do devotional reading. It is at this point important however to remembe the earlier issue between translations and paraphrases.
God bless you all and I am sorry for my wordiness, you might have guessed by now I am a preacher. Bye

Iam not sure which is the best out of those versions. The king James ones are good, but i normally read youth bibles because they make it easier to understand and they give examples in the modern age.
So that i can apply Jesus' teachings to life in todays world.

Seems to me the only real transltation I have read is KJV. The others paraphrase (niv), or colloquilize.
With a good understanding of our rapidly decaying language and an ability to account for multiple word translations; this is a good book.
The problem is that I think the NIV was translated by Bible translators more than credentialed linguists.
The problem with modern spoken American English is that it is not specific.
The general nature of many 'bibles' gives great latitude for bias or error.

Do all bibles say the same thing?
(KJV) an angel (NIV) an eagle (Rev 8:13)
(KJV) the Spirit (NIV) the light (Eph 5:9)
(KJV) his house (NIV) her house (Col 4:15)
(KJV) the synagogues of Galilee (NIV) the synagogues of Judea (Luke 4:44)
(KJV) I [John] stood upon the sand of the sea (NIV) the dragon [Satan]
stood on the shore of the sea (Rev 13:1)
(KJV) Good things to come (NIV) good things that are already here (Heb.
9:11)
(KJV) do his commandments(NIV) wash their robes (Rev 22:14)
The following are just SOME of the many verses that are omitted from the NIV: [Some versions might put it in brackets, or put a footnote at the bottom of the page, or just totally skip that verse entirely!]
Mark 9:44
Acts 8:37
Acts 28:29
Matt 18:11
Mark 15:28
Rom 16:24
Matt 17:21
Matt 23:14
Mark 7:16
Mark 9:46
Mark 11:26
Luke 17:36
Luke 23:17
John 5:4
Acts 15:34
Acts 24:7
Is it hard to be saved? Jesus says no, "For my yoke is easy.." Matt 11:30,
but the NIV says yes.
Mark 10:24
..."Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! (NIV)
...Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!(KJV)
What does the NIV have against fasting?
Acts 10:30
...I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed...(KJV)
...I was in my house praying...(NIV)
1 Corinthians 7:5
...give yourselves to fasting and prayer;(KJV)
...devote yourselves to prayer. (NIV)
Mark 9:29
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.(KJV)
He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer.(NIV)
Matthew 17:21
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.(KJV)
(The NIV OMITTED the WHOLE VERSE!) I guess they didn't think that verse was important even though our Lord Jesus said it.
Lets see what the NIV did to The Lord's Prayer.
Luke 11:2-4
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. (KJV)
Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation

Personally, I like the NIV. Of course, to really get the full picture, you gotta pay careful attention to those footnotes. And, it never hurts to cross-reference with other versions. For example, KJV says "Thou shalt not kill" while NIV has "murder" in place of "kill." And from what I've seen, murder is more accurate.
So every translation has small little things like that going on with them. The point is to put the Word of God into the language of the modern people, which the KJV accomplished (albeit in a poetic way) when it was written.
But all of them are accurate in saying that Jesus is our salvation.

RSV only because my NRSV wasn't on there. Still, both are excellent ecumenically-translated versions utilizing the most ancient and quality sources. Best of all, they are both formal equivalences, have the deuterocanonical, and have a Jew on the OT team to keep the OT honest!

I purchased a KJV/NIV Parallel Bible (Large Print, so as to read in dim church light)....
Can't beat it... NIV to read smoothly (great for reading entire books of the Bible), KJV for checks and balances and for verse memorization, poetic sound, and clarification on personal pronouns (ye vs. you, etc).
Seems the standard for many churches has become the NIV, and I'm happy to now have the KJV immediately available on the same page as the NIV. I recommend those who enjoy the NIV, but love and respect the KJV to get this version... Zondervan makes it (probably other publishers as well), and it comes in leather bound, making for a nice "main" bible... It will become mine. I just ordered mine from Amazon for under $50........... (32% off retail price):

I, too, have a KJV/NIV Parallel Bible, but mine is in hardcover with regular print. It's nice to have the NIV along side the KJV so when I'm reading the KJV and I get confused, I turn to the NIV for clarification.
From what I've gathered from information on different Bible translations, the KJV is the best one out there.

Bess You! You know I go with the Amplified Version, It's more of an english language. At the beginning when I start reading the Scripture, KJV, I didn't understand it,the Lord told me buy a Bible that you can understand, so I went to the store and ask the man can I have a Bible that I can understand, and he handed me the Niv Bible. God helped me study it after I read it over and over and over again and when I read the KJV I understood it. So for anyone that really wants to understand, the Amplified Version will talk that english language.

I voted NASB but I don't really think that any one Bible version is the "best". The NASB is a very good translation though from what I have heard. I have only read portions of it online and I don't own a copy but I would like to someday when I get enough money to buy a new Bible. I honestly really like my Holman Christian Standard Bible. However, I don't believe that any one Bible version is the best because they all have their advantages and disadvantages and people have their own preferences.

Wow, I was surprised to see that the KJV and NIV ranked as the top 2. The KJV is really quite archaic although it does have a beautiful poetic feel to it. Also, there have been new manuscripts been discovered like the Dead Sea Scrolls since the publication of the KJV meaning that newer versions are likely to be more accurate. As for the NIV, I have heard quite a number of people criticise it for various reasons.
Sharp
23rd July 2004, 04:28 PM
NASB is a good Bible for getting close to the literal wording of the text. It is always my choice when I have my Bible critic hat on.
However, that literal rendering also makes it difficult to read in English for devotional study. I prefer the NIV when I have the cross around my neck.
Comments?
I learned in seminary that sometimes the original Greek is open to a variety of meanings. The NASB and the KJV both try to keep that ambiguity so we can see multiple levels of meaning and decide ourselves.
I know some of the translators of the NIV, Ronald Youngblood and Donald Madvig. They are both good men. The NIV team had a different philosophy on translation. They tried to find the best (right???) way to translate and thus limited the scope of meanings.
I prefer the more ambiguous versions because they are more like the Greek and Hebrew.

I voted for the KJV because it is my favorite....I am no expert on translations; therefore, I will not say "____ is the best translation." I will only
share which ones I like. My first choice is the KJV. I recently found an awesome KJV study Bible which I use the most. My 2nd choice would have to be the NASB. My church uses this version. Occasionally I like to read from different versions.....sometime I would like to get one of those paralell study Bibles - the ones that have 4 different versions, allowing you to look at scripture side-by-side. Those are cool. :)

28th July 2004, 11:40 AM
I voted NIV because I think it translates with the original audience in mind. Another good modern translation is the Contemporary English Version.
When reading different Bible versions it is a matter of preference in what you like. I do think you should be able to read the Bible without a Bible commentary next to you to explain English words that are out dated.
The KJV is beautiful and poetic but I feel the translaters put a very sexist and political slant on it. I used to be a KJV only person until I took Greek in college and noticed some glaring differances. If love the KJV please don't take offence at my words I am not trying to offend you.
Take care.
The New Internation Version takes out various verses... If you pay attention to the verse number you are reading, you'll notice that you'll go in some places from say verse 23 of a chapter to verse 25! While the KJV may be hard to understand for some people, but it remains the most accurate and doesn't remove verses.

Like many people who want to understand the Bible as fully as possible, I tend to cross-refer between a number of bibles.
Software makes this much easier than it used to be with books. I use free software for my PC (www.e-sword.com (http://www.e-sword.com/)) and also on my Palm Pilot.
When reading the Bible purely for the pleasure of doing so, I always use the KJV. I also like the Tyndale Gospels (which pre-date the KJV) you can find these at http://uk.geocities.com/christopherfox2000

The NIV as well as the other "modern" versions miss out important things in their translation. Furthermore the interpretation is biased in favour of the interpreter because they use verse translation and not word translation: See this for comparisons http://watch.pair.com/scriptures.html

The NRSV is the best Bible on the market today, bar none. It is literal, readable (it reads on a 9th grade level), accurate, and inclusive. Other translations may be better for spicific purposes, and I must admit to a love for the enchanted worldview and enchanting language of the KJV, but as far as serious study goes, the NRSV reigns supreme for now. We will see how the ESV shapes up. Right now it is too difficult to read.
I voted (O)RSV, because someone forgot to list NRSV.

I hope that when my income is not so fixed I can explore other versions.
I feel that you need a translation that speaks the language you actually speak, i mean no one expects someone who speaks only spanish to make due with an english version do they?

Just out of interest, why do you have so many different versions of the bible? Are they just differently translated?
 Unfortunatly there are so many versions and they are different translations. Many Christians disagre with this because they havn't spent time to confer between the different translations. The difference may be very small, but very important. Compare the NIV with the original Hebrew and Greek. And find out how close they are. The problem began when the Catholic church (no fault of catholics of today) when they translated the bible into Latin and prevented the reading of the bible to anyone. And interperaters have been trying to fix the problem since. King James wasn't even a christian!!! When he wanted the bible translated in his name.
Lets just get back to the original, and forget the translators rose coloured glasses they (as we all do) were wearing when they translated the bible.
Thanks

So what about all the 100's of translations into languages other than English? I personally like reading the KJV, but I study using my NIV because I do believe it is the more accurate translation...being translated directly from the Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. Does that mean that because the Japaneese version isn't KJV or NIV that it's not really God's Word? OF COURSE NOT! God is speaking to people throughout the world--each in his own language-- through their particular versions. Praise God for how he is working, right now, today, through learned people who have studied and know the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramic and are now translating God's Word into languages (other than English) so that the whole world might be able to read the precious words of our Lord! Please remember to keep the translators of Wicliff and others in prayer in this most important work, that the Spirit through them may translate accurately His Word.

Did you know that the both the Message Bible and the Contemporary English Version are paraphrased or thought-for-thought Bibles? I find it hard to explain exactly what a paraphrase is. Basically the text is translated in a way that is easier for the reader to understand. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing because a good deal of interpretation is required by the translator to translate the text in to what the translator thinks it means. Paraphrased Bibles are good for simple reading but I wouldn't recommend them for studying.
For studying the Bible, I recommend something like the KJV or the New American Standard Bible. Keep in mind that these can be hard to understand and are not always best for beginning Bible users.
Then there are Bible versions that are in the middle of the translation scale. An example of this is the NIV. The New International Version is a good Bible version for general reading but I prefer the KJV, NKJV, or the HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible). The Holman Christian Standard Bible is on the word-for-word end of the scale but not too far on that end. It is more word-for-word than thought-for-thought but it has a balance of both and is considered to be a highly readable and accurate translation.
Here is some webpages to help you out. I have also included some King James Only sites for your interest but I have made it clear which ones those are. Personally, I am a King James Onlyist. I believe it's the most accurate Bible version but I like to read and study from other versions as well:

True. And the Geneva Bible came before the KJV as well. I'm not certain but I think the KJV was the first English translation meant to bring the Bible to the "common people". Wasn't the previous English Bibles primarily meant for scholars, preachers, and other educated persons of the time?

What is the Message Bible like anyway? Is there any websites where I can read excerpts of it? I do not like it at all. The translator, or "paraphraser," definitely puts his own theology and doctrines into "The Message." If you happen to agree with him thats great, but if you don't then you probably will not recommend this book.
Here is a side-by side comparison of a traditional translation (not sure which) and "The Message" and you can see how he adds his own theology in there.

"The KJV 1611 vs. The New Translations" (http://www.biblebelievers.com/jmelton/compare.html)
The site has some interesting points.... I just do not like the last sentence:
We urge you to forsake the new translations and return to the grand old Book that God has used and blessed for centuries. Use the Book that God uses: The King James Authorized Version. Its almost as if they believe the Bible was written in Old English!!! English did not exist in the time of Christ! I think a more accurate statement would be "Use the Book that God uses: The Septuagint." The Septuagint is the Greek Bible that Jesus and the apostles used.
But more importantly, it is dangerous to believe that there is only one acceptable translation, for 2 reasons:
1. Its a translation = not the original!
2. If the KJV is the one acceptable translation - I guess God only blessed English speakers with the "correct" Bible. Too bad for speakers of all the millions of other languages out there....

Whats the Tyndale Bible? I've never heard of it.Someone can correct if I'm wrong, but William Tyndale translated the New Testament from Greek to English, and parts of the Old Testament from Hebrew to English, because he felt that every person should have a copy of God's word. He ended up strangled and burned at the stake, because of this. The Tyndale Bible is the very first Bible to be printed in English.
From Amazon.com:
"William Tyndale's influence has been as wide as Shakespeare's . Between 1525 and 1535 he gave us our English Bible, translating the whole of the New Testament and half of the Old Testament. His pocket-sized Bibles were smuggled into England, ruthlessly sought out by the Church, confiscated and destroyed. Tyndale himself was condemned as a heretic, strangled and burned outside Brussels in 1536."

I really like the NIV and KJ...When I started reading the bible I started with a King James version...which sometimes I had a hard time understanding things...I would ask the elders at my church who were more than happy to help...I am glad of this because I got to know them better and they were able to help me understand the Lord and our Bible better. Then I picked up the NIV woman's devotional Bible at a local christian store...and I was able to understand what I was reading alot better...so if I had to pick out of the two I guess I would pick the NIV.

I voted KJV because I recently did a study on Bible Version Comparisons and here is what I found....(And I compared my NIV and KJV Bible to be sure that everything said here is true and it IS)
The NIV (and other new versions) take out and add THOUSANDS of words. It is all done very subtil and the average reader would never know the difference. The NIV removes 63,625 words! That is the equivalence of nearly the entire New Testiment! And it's not just "thee" and "thou", etc. that is omited. There are major biblical words omited and/or changed in the NIV, such as Christ, Lord, Jesus, God, Godhead, Lucifer, devil(s), hell, heaven, damned, blood, salvation, word of God, word of the Lord, and Lord Jesus Christ.
There are COMPLETE VERSES omited from the NIV Bible. Here is a list of some of them...
Matt 17:21
Matt 18:11
Matt 23:14
Mark 7:16
Mark 9:44
Mark 9:46
Mark 11:26
Mark 15:28
Luke 17:36
Luke 23:17
Luke 24:12
Luke 24:40
John 5:4
Acts 8:37
Acts 15:34
Acts 24:7
Acts 28:29
Rom 16:24
2 Cor 13:14
James 1:8
That's A LOT of verses taken out.
And here's more...
The NIV changes "Lucifer" to "Morning Star" in Isaiah 14:12. Revelation 22:16 clearly says the "Morning Star" is Jesus Christ! So this translation is actually blasphemously refrences Lucifer to Jesus Christ!
The NIV completely omits all refrences to Heaven and the words "deliver us from evil" from the Lord's prayer in Luke 11:24.
2 Samuel 21:19, in the NIV, says that "Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlemite killed Goliath." Every sunday school child knows David killed Goliath!
I am astonished at how many times the words, God, Christ, and Jesus are omited from the NIV.

God promised to preserve his word for all generations. He didn't promise to preserve lots of different versions. When you compare them they all disagree with each other. One must be the true Bible and the remainders flawed and false.
If there is no true and perfect copy of God's word then he is either a liar (and I am not game enough to accuse Him of lying) or less than perfect which would make him not God.
While the debate rages - I stand by the 1611 KJV. It is a personal choice.

So far I haven't come across a translation that I felt was superior I've found little things about each version I've read that just don't seem to be accurately translated, and little things that make me think "Wow, that makes so much sense, I never knew what that meant before!".

I didn't grow up with a Bible so I never got used to one at an impressionable age. My first was a KJV (actually a Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible that was my grandmothers which I read from for a short time before I got my KJV.) Then I got the NIV. I love the KJV but the NIV is hands down SOOOO much easier to read! Writers nowadays write in modern English so that's what I am used to reading on a daily basis and the NIV is more modern English than the KJV. I do go back to my KJV now and then but if I tried to read that on a daily basis I'd probably rather wanna stick my head in the sand and not pull it out until I'm about 87.

I personally don't feel that one version of the Bible is better than the other. I believe it all depends on which translation speaks to the individual. For me, that's the NLT Life Application Study Bible. It makes the Bible more personable for me.
However, I have NIV and KJV as well, and often refer to them for a different translation. It all depends on what I'm looking for. So simply put, everyone is looking for something different, whether that be a Bible to study with, the "original" translation, or whatever suits their needs at that time.

I really don't think it matters. God gets His word out no matter who translates it and He certainly doesn't depend on human translation. I prefer NASB because in a studying context, it's the best because it's a word for word translation. But as far as relaying and understanding of truth, no one is better than another.

And Aramaic isn't dead, it's still spoken in some tribes. Or so I saw on a documentary last year. = ) Don't know about Hebrew. But I will say that to translate from one modern language to another like Spanish to English is tricky at times, so I don't have a problem accepting that our English Bible's aren't 100% accurate. My faith is still rock-solid keeping this in mind.

It's great because you can download it and it's just a file not a program and you can access the same format online. It's really cool! And free...can't beat that! You can also order in hardback if you like the translation.

I think the original text that the bible was written in (the two original languages) was the best bible version. Because things get lost in translation, and the only way to truely understand the bible is to go see what it was meant in their day and age, and the language of the original writings and so on.

I used to use NLT but it really didn't let me grow in the Word. I personally believe KJV is the best- it's the first translated into english so, point blank- it's a lot less watered down. But if you don't like all the fancy language NKJV is just as good.

Well, I use a parallel Bible, it has NIV, KJV, AMP and NASB. I personally like AMP, because it adds in the greek and hebrew meanings. I would strongly recommend getting a parallel Bible, it's a very strong study aid.

I prefer the NAB, which isn't listed as a choice. It's a Roman Catholic Bible whose translation is very similar to that of the NIV. It has detailed descriptions of the Scripture verse-by-verse, so I don't have to ramble on guessing (and maybe misinterpreting) its meaning, which may not be edifying to God.

While it's not something I would "go to war over" I would appeal to people to please find a good translation and not an easy translation. Some suggestions:
ESV, NASB, KJV, NKJV, and sometimes NIV
I cheat a bit and use a parallel bible with 4 translations, NASB, KJV, Amplified, and NIV (just because it's so widely used). I initially bought this to use as a study tool but have come to use it as my primary bible even for my "easy" reading devotional times.

I like the NKJV, but the copyright on it is very hard to comply with. I chose the NASB because I have used that one for years, and have had absolutely no complaint with it. I have a NRSV, and it is interesting to use, but I'd switch to my trusty NASB for deep study rather than use anything else. I have a KJV that I use with the NASB too. My NASB gets the most use, though.

i like NIV and its used a lot in my chrch, but or personal study i read The Message:Remix alot, as its in contemporary language and is so easy to understand. The bible was written in the language of the people who were arounda t the time, fishermen etc, so the message does the same, puts the bible into the language of those who are around now, the teenagers, the young men and women dreamers, the office workers, dustbin men.
Is a great translation :)

None are the "best". Most "prosaic" - KJV, most "accurate and easy" - NKJV, most "illuminating" - Amplified, etc. But, because I was raised in various countries and cultures, I know how things get screwed up in translation, even by the "experts". Many things don't translate at all, and translators admit that they sometimes have to settle for "fairly" close. So, if you want to get analytical, learn the languages of the earliest manuscripts and all cultural nuances so you can understand cliche' and analogy. Kind of dumb, but definitely analytical. I find the best "version" for study and expounding on the true meanings of the words, in context, is the Amplified.

Well the arguement is not that the NIV is missing them, but that the KJV adds them.
Either way, both are Scripture, nothing major is changed.

i love 'the message' which is written in modern english. not only does it give a better insight into what life was like 2000 years ago, but u can understand God so much easier- don't forget the Bible was not designed to b all 'high and mighty', but something we as Christians can understand, relate 2 and enjoy.

I used to think that the KJV was the most reliable and "inspired" version (how could one version be more inspired than another in the first place?). Hmph. Anything but; I have come to realize that there are several textual and typographical errors in it, and I no longer think that it is a good version to use. Maybe the NKJV, but I don't know yet.
As of now, I vote NIV. But I use several translations when need be; I can understand the meaning and contexts of verses much more easily that way.

All Translations have errors. Don't throw out the KJV because it has a few errors.
I recommend the RSV, or the NASB.

i completely agree...
however i also use the message because it puts the bible in the same sort of atmosphere now as it would have been when it was written, reminding me of its reality-when the bible was originally written it wasn't high and mighty, but everyday language...
