I went to a COC college and was told that dancing, that is dancing between a man and a women, was forbidden. Is this a common COC teaching our just that particular school's affiliation.

Q: Why won't CofC couples have sex standing up?
A: Because it would look too much like dancing.
:D
Seriously, I heard that growing up as well. I questioned where it was mentioned in the Bible and got a lecure on being a smart-alec.
As with many things CofC, it is common but not universal.

If by dancing you mean shaking your money-maker out on the dance floor in the suggestive gyrations we see these days yes, I veiw that as sinful. Something about reveling and the impure thoughts that this activity inspires. . . . . . . You mean we're not suppose to  Just kidding :D .

That's funny, I'll have to tell that one to my brother-in-law. He likes to tell me Catholic jokes.

No, dancing is not a sin. Going to the ballet, or square dancing is not sinning, but if the act of dancing causes you to lust, then lust is a sin. There are many scriptures that tells us lust is a sin (Matthew 5:28, 2 Timothy 2:22, etc.) Basically, the church of Christ, traditionaly, tends to lean on the better safe than sorry aspect. So, your c.o.C. schools will not host dances, have frats or sororities, etc... to try and keep you from those temptations. Hope this gives a better idea!

From what I understand they do have social clubs like fraternities and sororities, but they are more service oriented.

Ya, they have social clubs, but they can't have frat's. Because with frat's you have parties, with parties you have drinking, and with drinking you have dancing. So, having frat's sends you straight to hell. </sarcasm> So, yes they just named them social clubs to get around the whole not having frat's and sororities.

Is dancing a sin?
Only if you're good at it ;)
Actually this is the whole reason pre-marital sex is forbidden. It might lead to dancing. :)
OK - Seriously now. I see it as another one of those fence laws. We tend to build in all of these extra rules as a way to protect us from breaking more important ones. The problem is they tend to become the focus in and of themselves. Christianity is reduced to a list of do's and don'ts for some (ie: Do go to church, read your bible, get baptised and pray. Don't drink, smoke, gamble, dance or have sex outside of marriage.)- which ironicly was kinda the problem with Judaism in Jesus' time.
I'm not suggesting for a moment that the do's and don'ts aren't important or have their place. They clearly do... but they're not the whole thing. Ultimately whether or not dancing is a sin is primarily a personal matter. If it's causing you or others to lust then that's the problem.
Peace

Q. Why do ......... believe sex is a sin?
A. Because it might lead to dancing.
This is a very old joke from my childhood. Not going to mention the denomination I omitted, incase the trolls are hungry.

Thanks to all those who answered. It does make sense that not all dancing is sinful just the kind of dancing that leads to lust would be a sin. Know that I think about it the school did have an annual program put on by the social clubs that did involve dancing that was respectful.
God Bless,
