I currently work at Kroger as a bagger. Having recently turned 16, my job availability is somewhat enlarged. I need suggestions on where to work. I have tried the pet stores, and they all require 18 or have no open positions. Same with all the bookstores and major flower stores. A requirement of age 18 is also in the Kroger floral department.
I need something more productive than bagging en masse fake processed foods into plastic bags. I'd like to find a job to where I go in and feel like I am contributing positively to something. I've run out of ideas. Suggestions, please? :D

A good number of the young guys who have been baggers at our store and do it well, have been given additional responsibilities and hours in Grocery, Dairy and Frozen. Stick with it, it will pay off. If, when you are 18, you haven't gotten other opportunities at Kroger's, then look for something else.
Peace,
Don

There's not really much of the traditional "make a difference" jobs available for you yet, but maybe you could try making your current job make a difference in someone's life. Make nice with a customer having a bad day, help lil' ol' ladies take their groceries to their car, etc. Maybe God wants you to make a difference that way. The world needs more helpful folks in the service industry :)

I do exactlyyy what you're doing right now, and I love it. I made a little tip by helping this lady load groceries into her trunk since it was raining, I greet people coming and offer help, I usually end up having small conversations with random people and you can tell it makes a difference. Sometimes just a nod and smile is all someone needs to have a better day.
Count your blessings. Krogers is actually a really good company to work for, and you're there 4 years earlier than I am.

Also try cloth department stores sometimes they hire minors. Like TJ maxx and so on. if it does not work then wait until you get older. What is the rush?? enjoy your teen years they never come back...

Is it so common nowadays for entry level positions to require 18 years? If so that would seem to be a major change from when I was a teen in the 80's.

I'm certainly not in a rush out of my teen years. I'm just, in general, against huge places like Kroger. We shop there, but if it were up to me we'd get 100% organic. I guess I'll stick around. Or switch to Food City. I might try a clothing store, or call up a few of the local food markets or flower nurseries.

I've worked many retails jobs in my life. I started working retail when I was 14. They all stink. What will really help you in the future is staying at Kroger for at least one year (longer is better) so that it looks good on an application for another job. Any time you stay at a job less than 1 year, it looks bad. You may have trouble getting other jobs if your work history shows 2 months at one place, than 5 months at another, ect. Kroger may seem like a big, bad company, but I've heard good things about how they treat their employees. In the end, that's what's important, not whether or not all the goods they sell are organic.
