View Full Version : Quirks!

You know, it's really hard to get to know people on an internet forum. Partly because of the lack of body language, partly because of just the medium itself, but also partly because all the weird/fun/cute/annoying things are hidden.
So what are your "quirks"? :)
Here are some of mine:
I am notorious for walking into a kitchen (or bathroom) and leaving all of the cupboard doors open after looking for something. I won't even notice.
I'm a freeze-baby, and I've found that one of the fastest and most convenient ways to remedy this is to simply put my fuzzy bathrobe on over my clothes when I'm at home. Looks retarded, but it works!
I'm terrible at finishing non-fiction books. I'll get to a part that makes me think, put the book down to think about it, and forget to ever pick it back up again.
I have to have my feet under the covers when I'm sleeping and the covers have to have a certain weight to them, even in the summer.
There are a couple - anyone want to share? :D

Being true to my Italian heritage, if I can't move my hands while talking, I can't express myself.
I'm the exact opposite, when it comes to feet. I can't have my feet covered when I'm sleeping, even in the cold. I also can't stand shoes in general. Wherever possible, I go barefoot.

I'm not a big fan of shoes so much, either. Unless, of course, my feet are looking nasty to me.

I don't like hot food. I will cook something, get it out of the oven, and throw it straight in the fridge to cool it down. I don't like hot drinks, either.

I am terrible at remembering names. I'm a Spanish teacher so remembering over 100 names is part of the job. The year's almost over and I still mess up with a couple students. I can know everything about them.. but their names just don't always come to me right away. I hate it because it makes some students feel like I don't think abou them at all and that's not the case. I feel bad about that.
I am terrible at thinking on my feet (this goes for names too). I lose track of what I was just talking about because my mind will get distracted sooooo easily.
I'm clumsy.

Oh... I've gotta share this with y'all. It's not general quirk of mine but it is emblematic of my general absent-mindedness described above:
So this morning I am teaching in 1st hour and my student points out to me that I am wearing two DIFFERENT shoes!! A brown tennis shoe and dress shoe! We laughed so hard. I was so embarrassed and told my class that that will be one for the yearbook. Luckily my wife (who is currently looking for a teaching job) was home this morning so she brought in my other shoe. Otherwise I would have had to have gone through the entire day with two different shoes!

when I sleep at night, I have the whole portion of one of my legs hanging outside of the comforter or blanket. If it's really cold, I put it back in.
I also fart in my sleep. Sometime without me knowing it.
Let me know if this too much, but I pee sitting down instead of standing up. I have a choice in the matter, so why not. Especially late at night when I have no clue or what's going on, I leave no mess & the seat is always down.
I cannot pick one and just read & finish that one book. I'm currently reading about 6-8 books at once.

Sometimes I get lost in my thoughts and drift off into space. This happens when I pray the ascetic prayers.

Gee, I was thinking that many, many quirks are evident in this forum :)
My quirk is I think I'm normal. I also don't have any good embarrassing moment stories. A friend (w/counseling degree) says it's because I laugh at inappropriate, sometimes perverse, times-therefore storing the memory of my embarrassment in a different part of the brain than where it's "supposed" to go! And so it gets lost. :)
I'll stick my feet out of the covers but I need my torso covered!

This happens often when I'm talking, with or without my hands.

I prefer praying on rosary as opposed to prayer ropes (note: NOT praying the rosary, praying ON rosary). I just like the sound of beads. Prayer ropes are so well-behaved and silent. And boring. :)
I hate throwing away food - to the point I refrain from eating stale bread only if I see fungi on it.
Give me savory instead of sweet anytime. Sour and bitter can come only in combination with sweet.
Sometimes I put my tea in the fridge to make the ACTUAL ice tea.
I can't refrain from cuddling the cat when I see her sleeping in some cute overload pose.
When bored/nervous, I scratch these scars I have under my hair. Also excess skin around/on my nose (leading to me having slightly reddish nose). Anyone making Rudolph reference will be instantly put on my 'to die of hemorroids' prayer list.
Sometimes I daydream so hard that I get overexcited and start running (if outside). If inside, I just walk in circles quickly.
I generally don't notice people I know on the street.
When I listen to songs, I usually plan how to draw a verse that catches my attention. This occasionally happens when I find a prayer verse I like. Psalter is especially drawsome.
The longer I talk the louder I get.
I generally walk very swiftly.
When someone says "(Dear/Good) God!" or "Jesus!" I usually turn and say "Yes?"
When someone says "my *** huts" (meaning: I couldn't care less) I usually respond with: "Oh, you've got syphillis?" In the similar manner, when someone says "my *** hurts" (same meaning), I respond with: "Oh, you've got hemorroids?"

I lived in Texas the first 25 years of my life, so I say a lot of words wrong (I use Texas slang) so I get laughed at a lot.
I also sleep with my feet out of the covers.
I have the messiest car ever, (drink cups, clothes, coats, candy wrappers, receipts from stores, etc.).
I have tons of almost empty laundry detergent containers laying around in my laundry room. (can't throw things away if there's still a little in the container).
I hang dry all of our clothes. ( except underwear, socks, & towels).
My closets are stuffed to capacity.
It takes me exactly 2 hours everyday to get ready.
I prop a pillow under my left arm when I sleep.
I repeat myself a lot when I talk to people.
I have a radar detector in my car because I drive way over the speed limit.
I pull away fast at lights and stop signs.
Every morning when I get up, I have to have 2 cups of coffee, and get a back massage in my human touch massage chair.

I walk really fast, too. The harder I'm thinking, the faster I walk. Drives people who are walking with me absolutely crazy.
I prefer cars with a manual transmission because then I feel more like a race car driver. Oh, and I drive very fast.
I do laugh at my own jokes, although I try to at least wait until others are laughing first. Hey, if I didn't think it was funny, I wouldn't share it!
I have a tiny crease across my nose because when I was a little kid, I would itch my nose by rubbing it in circles. Can't do that anymore because it's pierced. ;)

****I can't stand the use of "y'all"! It drives me crazy and in the first place..........who is y'all anyway?
****I have to sleep with one foot under the cover and one out!!!!!
****I love to have it cold. I like to crank the air conditioner up and then get one of our big mink blankets (from Korea) and cuddle up underneath it and sleep!
****I love to watch Sponge Bob and I love to go to the animated cartoon movies!
****I like to only drink Starbuck's coffee. If I am at someone's house and they make some generic stuff, I have to choke the cup down and then decline refills.
****I don't like to get my fingers dirty when eating. I usually eat everything (pizza, finger foods, etc.) with a fork and knife. I hate eating left overs and I CAN NOT stand crumbs.
****I love Suduko and I have several books, but I will start one and get stuck and put the book away. Just like I like to read and I when I get to a boring part in the book, I put it down and usually never finish reading it (I currently have 5 books started).

For as long as I can remember. And it's not a phobia or anything--I will eat food hot if it's socially appropriate to do so--but I prefer it cold or room temperature. Hot beverages, though, are a different critter. I don't understand why anyone would drink hot anything. It's nauseating to me.

My family has reminded me of some more...
I have a phobia of germs, so I am a chronic hand washer. (wash my hands about every 20 min. or so)
I use latex gloves when I clean the house, esp. the bathrooms.
My cabinets are also filled to capacity.
I sniff a lot (must have sinus problems).
I am very open (will pretty much talk about anything to anyone).
I like watching people get operated on, on the surgery channel. I also like trauma in the E.R.

1) When I speak fast, I mutter what I have just said outloud to see if it made sense. My sisters say I look crazy when I do it.
2) I hate using forks, If it was up to me it would be socially acceptable to eat with your hands.
3) Without some sort of white/background noise I can't go to sleep. This also goes for the fact that complete silence disturbs me, I need to hear airplanes, and cars, and creaky floorboards, crickets in the summer, the hum of the airconditioner, or the hiss of the steam-heat.
4) My hands need to constantly be doing something. I don't think there has ever been a time where my hands are busy doing something, either playing with my own fingers, or clicking a pen, or twirling a pencil , or doing something.
5) I brush my teeth, and shave while in in the shower. Believe it or not I have had some of my most prayerful moments in the shower as well.
6) My bed is next to a wall and I like to stick my head in the crack between the wall and the bed when I got to sleep. I also like to put the covers and pillows over my head, but I like to have my legs exposed.
7) I eat leftovers for breakfast.
8) I have this tendancy to lick my knife while I am eating. I have never cut my tongue, but my mother still yells at me for it.
9)According to my family I snore verly loudly.

--I'm a nut when it comes to yardwork, but I'll complain about having to do it right up to the moment I start, then I can't stop.
--I have to set a timer to turn the TV off after I fall asleep. I can't get to sleep without the TV, and it has to be some mindless sitcom so I don't find myself getting interested in it.
--Sometimes I interrupt when I think the other person has completed their thought, only to find out that their thought was much deeper than what I had just responded to!
--I drink more coffee than humans should be allowed to consume. I drink it all day.
--I can be impatient, mostly with myself, but I'm working on that.
--I can't bring myself to buy something "new" if I still have one that works (take this 20 year-old refrigerator, for example).
--I can't stand greasy streaks on the stove. It's a new cooktop, it should look like new. ;)
--I only like milk in cereal.

Luckily of the two people from TAW who have actually met me, one doesn't acknowledge my presence anymore and the other is not currently posting, so I guess am I safe from others blabbing my quirks for me.

Actually, this medium makes it a lot easier for me since I suffer from Aspergers Syndrome and can't read body language anyway. I can pick up a lot from the "tone" of peoples' posts and the patterns of their "behaviour" on the forums.
My biggest quirk is that I am a deliberate slob. I choose to be a slob to avoid the slippery slope of OCD that could easily grab hold of me.
Oh and I LOVE fried peanut-butter and banana sandwiches. :yum: :yum: :yum:

And yet he could remember what I had written on page 4 of my thesis if I asked him about it. I'm terrible with names too, but lack the gift for remembering other things about a person as well...

Y'all is a contraction of "You all" which is Southern for Youse guys.
And if you like Sudoku, get a Nintendo DS and Brain Age. I love the Sudoku on there. It lets you put possible answers in each square, then eliminate possibles as you solve other squares. It's awesome fun. I like the Brain Age puzzles and training too but not as much as my wife. She does it every day. I guess that could be a quirk as well.

I'll often do this too. I will also rehearse conversations in the privacy of my car or when I think I'm alone... the worse thing is that i will rehearse conversations I have already had. I think this is in an attempt to convince myself that it went better than it really did. Usually these are when I am trying to express a belief (in a debate, an argument or just an amiable discussion). So, oftentimes if in the real conversation that preceded my presentation was not very slick, but I know I still got my basic point across, what I say afterward by my lonesome is quite slick with the perfect words and such. And I let myself believe that my original presentation was really that awesome. lol

Man, these are awesome! And I do far too many of these things as well....
Here are a couple more that I thought of:
*I can get ready for work in fifteen minutes (and usually do).
*I hate going to bed at night and I hate waking up in the morning.
*I have a habit (I think it's both good and bad) of taking my own ideas and theories and those of others and completely ripping them apart to figure out where they're weak. I will sit and do this for hours sometimes - just get kind of lost in it. I do it to my own ideas so often and I'm so used to it that I forget that it sometimes offends other people when I do it to theirs. :p
*I am usually very, very quiet when I meet people for the first time.
*I can't stand small talk. I think it's incredibly boring.

I need a fan on and blowing across my face in order to sleep. Even when it is winter or cold.
I never sleep with my feet outside the covers. Someone once grabbed my foot when I was a kid, either my dad or someone in the boy scouts, and pulled me out of the bed when I was asleep. Never have felt comfortable enough to leave my foot outside the covers since then.
I do not smile unless I make a point to do so. I was abused as a child and one of the things that would provoke a violent reaction from either parent was if they "caught me" smiling and they were in one of those violent moods. I used to smile a lot when I was a kid but that was slowly beaten (literally heh) out of me over the years. That's what emoticons are for though right? :)
I have to have doors locked if I am by myself or just at home. My parents would often storm into my room and abuse me with no warning and they disabled the locks in the house to keep me from locking the doors to keep them out. So now I have to have all doors locked.
I hahve to have windows closed and the drapes/curtains/blinds drawn down. My dad once when I was about seven was looking in at me through my bedroom window and thought I looked like I was "up to something" so came he in through the window and beat me. I remember I was doing something truly nefarious at the time: playing with my He-man action figures.
I am mildly paranoid in that I think people are "looking at me" and it makes me worry what they may be planning even though I know its a completely irrational feeling. If you think its from child abuse, well, cookie for you. :P
I have to sleep on my right side facing out towards a fan. This isn't because of abuse but just a natural leaning.
I don't like to wear clothes. I like to wear nothing but underwear, very comfy shorts and socks with no shirt if I can.
I'm probably mildly OD in that I have to have things a certain way when I'm eating or doing something stationary. I have to sit a certain way, have the drink sit here, have my fork there, have a napkin there, and other general small details that somehow become monumentally important if I can't quite get them the way I like.

Someone here encouraged me to detail all of the things that happened to me but I don't feel comfortable doing that. For one thing it seems too "internet attention needy" (even though I know none of you would think that of me) and frankly some of the details are just not fit for public reading.
I have talked to two fathers of the church our mission came from but honestly its very hard to make real connections with them when I've never actually met one and the other can only come so often because of the travel needs put on him to minister several missions all over. They both have been very helpful, especially considering the first time I confided in anyone my abuse it was my old Methodist pastor who laughed at me and told my parents I was "making up stories" about them. After that series of beatings I never mentioned them to anyone until I was married.
The problem I have is trying to escape the survival mentality I was forced to adopt to try and avoid as much as possible the irrational stimuli that produced the abuse. My quirks, which I have more of but are more private and I won't mention them here, almost all come from a small child trying to understand why Christian parents would so arbitrarily abuse a good kid (modesty aside) who didn't actually do anything. I can't drop them and I'm afraid it would take some kind of therapist to try and overcome them.
I do not hate my parents I might add and we actually have a pretty good relationship at this point. They never talk about the abuse and indeed claim it never happened if I ever skim the issue with them. They want no forgiveness because they do not think they did anything wrong. So I forgive as much as I am capable of understanding and constantly pray to Blessed St. Patrick to pray for me to gain just some of the love and forgiveness he had with all those who enslaved and abused him. :crosseo:

I think that's a great quirk.. but as you say, it's good to have tact when using it on others. :)
*I can't stand small talk. I think it's incredibly boring.
I can stand it, but I agree that it is immensly awkward especially when you think of "Why?" and the reason behind it is not as obvious as why we migt debate (to prove a point) or compliment someone (so they feel good about themselves) or ask questions (because you really want to know). Something that has helped me not hate it as much as it that small talk, I think, is our cultural way of simply saying, "Hey, I see you're a person and I respect you as a fellow human being to the point taht I am willing to take some time out of my day (even if it's a few seconds) to say "I acknowledge your existence." It's that... and the fact that a lot of us hate that awkward dead silence in the elevator and so many prefer to exchange awkward silence with awkward small talk. lol

In the summer, I like to sleep without covers, but I always have to have a small piece of the sheet over my body, like a little corner across my midsection!
I almost always need the bathroom fan on in order to get to sleep because I am such a light sleeper.
I am a slob, but only to a point, then I become upset with the mess and clean it up completely
I have become hooked on coffee like DonVa. I drink about a half gallon a day. The funny thing is, I sleep a lot better now than I did before I became a coffee addict.
I can't go medium on anything, I am either totally hot on a new hobby, or I burn out on it and never do it again.
That is why my wife thinks I am just in my latest obsession phase with EO, and once it passes I will come to my senses and go back to being a Protestant again!

Ok, here go just a few of my quirks:
I refuse to eat pasta of any shape or kind.
Even in summer I must have a light blanket on me to sleep, although I like to have my bare feet unconvered.
During Steelers games I have to be wearing some article of Steelers clothing.
My 8 foot icon painting table is always a total disaster.
French fries are just an excuse to eat bbq sauce for me.
Wings are an even bigger excuse for bbq sauce.
Any time a Billy Joel song comes on the radio, I must sing along.
I love to debate which romanesque paintings are icons and which are not when in an art museum.
When in art museums I look for paintings with dogs in them, and it is an added bonus if they have King Charles Spaniels in them. (There are more of such painting than you would think)
I love Star Wars, almost too much.
I am writing an icon of St. Oliver d'Ancone, an Benedictine Monk who was canonized just in time to make it licit for me to write his icon. (think about the names of my dogs)
I refer to Beethoven as "The Great Ludwig Van."
I do a very funny looking dance every time the Steelers score a touchdown.
When I get very excited, I tend to speak in German.
I hate folding laundry and tend to let 5 or 6 loads build up before I give in and fold them.
I am a far right conservative, yet almost half my friends are flaming liberals.
Ok, enough dirt about me.

I have an odd history.
I don't trust people easily (got stabbed in the back in 2nd and 3rd grades).
I consider myself a Democrat with Socialist leanings, yet can sometimes "motivate" people to work hard.
I'm in high school ROTC and this next year I will be promoted for the... fourth time.

Oh, she should come to Barnsley! We still have thee etc. now, though I only use them occasionally. An example would be a common local way of saying goodbye/See you later, which is 'Si-thee' (Short 'i' on 'see', 'thee' instead of 'you', and run together so it sounds like one word. I wonder what the Liturgy would sound like rendered in a Barnsley accent?
One of my quirks is my switching accents for dramatic effect, so for instance I'll imitate a Romanian accent when expressing good natured annoyance with my children (from my wife), and say something like 'Ah keel yu!', and even sometimes slip into thick Moldovan peasant phrases, though those are actually in Romanian (ma2000 would probably know the sort of thing I mean) when my brother does something particularly stupid I'll use Barnsley 'Ee, tha's got bree-ans, lad', comedy Gestapo-German accents aren't unusual either. Depends on the mood. Most of the time, I pretty much speak standard english with just a twang of the Arctic Monkeys about it, though.

No, more an exaggeration of my mother's accent via Herr Flick from 'Allo, 'Allo.
Come to think of it, it's not uncommon to find Moravian accented German (Taitschland, for instance, as my great-grandfather would have said for Deutschland), slavic accents (I'm particularly fond of referring to the cat as 'ze kyet') in general, and a rather over the top French (inspired by my cousins) being used as the mood takes me, either.
One thing I can say for the nigh on incomprehensible accent of my home town (Barnsley) - it did make for a much easier time with Shakespeare than many of my classmates had!

Of course it is the same William Wallace! I just got done with a life of King Robert the Bruce which was very informative, but it spun him in a very positive light and there are plenty who saw him as being a tad cowardly prior to Wallace's actions which finally spurred Bruce into action.

Not me. I don't like LP's and 45's that crackle when you play them. I want clean, clear sound. I do like film photographs, but that is a different story.

However, when it comes to my music, I like it clear and crisp. I like to be able to hear the words, even though sometimes that's still a chore.

LOL! I'm not sure if it is, yet. But, I would venture to guess that it will be someday. However, I'm pretty sure that ET is a classic.
But, I was more referring the some slightly older classis, um, like the original War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Day Mars Invaded the Earth, etc . . . . :sorry: :o
Um, I guess that's another on of my quirks, when I talk about loving classic movies, I usually mean the very cheesey sci-fi/horror movies. Ever hear of the Day of the Triffids?

If ET is a classic, then the Empire Strikes Back is a classic. The Empire Strikes Back set the bar for all special effects. It totally changed the state of the art and it was a far better story than ET!

Okay, okay. I have a confession. I watched the very first Star Wars . . . um . . . three times at one theater in one night, and fell madly in love with Luke Skywalker. However, to this day, I haven't watched a-single-nother Star Wars movie.
But, to improve you mood and affirm you claim here's a link that clearly considers the Star Wars movies classics:

Like a lot of others here, I don't like to sleep with my feet out of the covers.
I have to have the fan on or I can't sleep, mostly because I have to have some kind of noise.
I also need SOME kind of light. But not too much light. As long as it isn't pitch black.
I don't like to leave the house without a hat on.
I love scents. I randomly buy cologne and body spray.
If I see a mirror I have to look in it.
If I'm excruciatingly bored, I'll just go to sleep for awhile.
I love to sleep. Mostly because I tend to wake up at least 3 times a night.
I try to find a deeper meaning behind most things.
That thing with David about facial expressions reflecting daydreams? I do the exact same thing all the time.
I was never good with keeping money until recently.
I'd normally rather listen than talk.
People tell me I'm an 'old soul'. It's easy for me to make friends with people older than I am, and hard to with people younger.
I like to 'sauce things up'. I don't eat many things without adding some type of condiment to it. I think ketchup with mac and cheese, brown beans, eggs, and other various foods is really good.
I'm very introverted.
I'm sure I'll think more up later.

Well, try living in tornado alley? Actually, where I live in Oklahoma is called "Tornado Alley," because precisely six (6) point something-or-other miles strait north of main street in our iddy-biddy town is the exact center of Oklahoma. Interestingly, the Native Americans have always said that our town, Paden, OK. (history note: our town is name after US Marshall Paden Tolbert. Ever see the Kevin Cosner movie Silverado?)won't ever be hit by a tornado because it is situated between two rivers. Deep Fork River and the North Canadian River. So far, we haven't been hit directly, yet the town west of us has. This kind of puzzles me, because I believe it is situated between the same two rivers that Paden is?
BTW, another quirk of mine is that I sometimes ramble on-and-on-and-on-and-on-and-on . . . . . :o

I can't discuss that in public. PM, sure, but not in public. Just let it be known that when an Orthodox priest tells you your marriage is toxic and to not be suprised if it ends and thus to prepare yourself for the distinct possibility of it, you know there is a really serious problem. And NO, I am not going to listen to any lectures from ANYONE on the sanctity of marriage. The healthiness of my soul is more important than a marriage.

It is such a silly theory and there is no truth to it, but they are convinced it is true. Thus they bark and harass me until they get a small bite of what I am eating, and if I don't share with them they bark and harass me for upto an hour after I am done eating. My sister has a Yorkie. I babysat him for a week. She said he was a "lap" dog. I can handle a lap dog . . . you know, a dog that "lays quietly" in your lap and sleeps. However, apparently for her "lap dog" means a dog who sits in your lap and laps YOUR FACE ninety miles an hour non-stop.
Then . . . how do you get angry with an animal, one that doesn't even really know you, who loves you that much?
It was a loooonnngg week. :)
You have not a had a kiss from a dog until Oliver kisses you. His tongue hangs 4 inches out the left side of his mouth at all times. Needless to say his dog kisses are long and wet and sloppy and gross.

Uhkay . . . eeeeeeeewwwww . . . . . . I hope you keep your mouth closed . . . . . :help:

Actually, I've always heard that a dogs mouth is cleaner than a humans, do you know . . . . is that true or is it an urban legend . . . . .

It's really gross, but that one weekend that I had to watch the dog, it was real convenient because she always cleaned up her own mess in the yard. I couldn't get to it quick enough. She'd dump and eat.

Tikhon once sniffed his own poop, but he never ate it! I am glad of that because the dog always likes to sneak kisses across my mouth whenever he can.

This isn't about dogs or Mike's ex-wife ...
... I thought I'd respond to the OP.
While I sleep, I roll a lot, wrapping myself in my sheets. I end up swaddled, cocooned.
My wife tells me that I am terribly particular and methodical about everything I do, with few exceptions.
I need to have my back to a wall when I am sitting in a restaurant.

LOL! What are the exceptions to your being terribly methodical and particular? Do tell! :D

I do that too! It's a great way to break up the monotany and make it seem like your cereal supply is lasting longer! :)

Not really, considering Chex Mix is a staple at most parties.

I don't have any quirks. ;)
Well, maybe a few.
I sleep in a cocoon wrapped up in my favorite comforter.
I secretly live in the 1890s. :)
I wouldn't watch TV at all if it weren't for "Little House on the Prairie" and "Star Trek, Voyager" and maybe the reruns of X-files too. :)

It was quite by accident. I was running short on one kind of cereal so I added a different one to fill the bowl. After mixing, I thought, Hmmmm...this is good and I had a new quirk. :D

I have dropped 12 over the past year being on my feet more, but if I totally cut the addiction to pop out of my life I would drop another 10. But then my clothes would be too loose...

No, I have dropped 12 and my clothes that I had gotten a bit heavy for now fit loosely, so if I drop another 10 none of my jeans or khakis would fit without a belt!

Same here - I would probably have to actually wake up earlier, and I don't know that that will ever happen.
I used to eat breakfast as a kid - all sorts of weird stuff since I didn't like the traditional breakfast foods. I remember eating big slices of ham and...pickles. But not together. I would get a whole napkin-full of dill hamburger pickles and eat them. I know, I'm weird.
