Oh, goodness. Do people actually wake up at 3 AM, pray it real quick, then retire once more?

(Oh, and is there another link? That one seems to be blocked by my school website filter. >.<)

They're primarily used by monastics, who don't sleep much & tend to pray most of the night.

Monastics don't sleep much? O_o I thought they generally received a well-rested 8 hours.

8 hours :) Igoumen Emilianos of Simonopetra monastery in mt. Athos slept only 1 hour a day! (ok, so it's not the typical case...:P)

The Liturgy also has an assigned hour, although I don't know where it goes in the cycle. I think it's after Matins.

My patron Saint never slept in a bed after he was tonsured a monk. If he slept at all it was for an hour or two slumped over in front of an icon.

I found a layperson's version of the hours at Liturgica.com and printed those off. I can't pray the ones at 9AM, 12PM, or 3AM due to school. But I prayed the 9PM last night but skipped the 6PM which I plan to do tonight. I tried to do the ones at 12AM and 3AM and 6AM, but I am a person who very much loves his sleep. :P I've cussed out the alarm clock before and called it a liar.... ^.^;;

Did you know that the 1st hour is really 7:00am? Think about it. :)

(The tradition may still be 6:00am though - I'm not sure.)

OK. Here is what I am thinking of doing, and am wondering if this is OK or not:

12AM – Sixth Hour Prayers
3AM – Ninth Hour Prayers
6AM – First Hour Prayers
6:20ishAM – Morning Prayers
Whenever AM – Breakfast Before/After Thanks
9AM – Third Hour Prayers
12PM – Sixth Hour Prayers
Whenever PM – Midday Prayers and Lunch Before/After Thanks
3PM – Ninth Hour Prayers
6PM – First Hour Prayers
6:30ishPM – Supper Before/After Thanks and Evening Prayers
9PM – Third Hour Prayers
9:30 or 10 PM – Night Prayers

This is my desired prayer plan to achieve. Right now I am doing about 1/3 of this, and am slowly trying to add in all of these. Does this seem OK? Again, my mom won’t let me talk to a priest or monk, so the best I have is here and other websites.
*huggles everyone* ^_^ Thanks!

That looks a bit confusing to me. My book has it listed as follows

12am Midnight service
Sunrise Matins
6am First Hour
9am Third Hour
Noon Sixth Hour
3pm Ninth Hour
6pm Vespers
9pm Compline

Yes, a little. But what I was thinking of doing is replacing Vespers, Matins, and whatnot with a repeat of the hours. But only because I have a laity version of the hours and not of the others.

Here is where you can get a nice book of hours that has a shortened, lay version http://www.holymyrrhbearers.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=43

It's only $6. You can probably call or e-mail the monastery and ask if they will take a check or money order through the mail. I'm pretty sure they will.

If my mom would let me order it. She vehemently opposes Orthodoxy. I'm lucky to have a printout of laity hours at Liturgica.com. Does this book have ALL the hours, even at 12 and 3 AM?

I know what book that is - I have it! If it worries you to have a book with the return address saying "Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery" I'll send it to you - although you'd have to justify getting something from a guy in Seattle. PM me if you're interested.
