View Full Version : Holy Water?

I was given a bottle of Holy Water blessed at a RC Church and I am not sure what to do with it. I don't feel like I can use it the same way I use water from the Orthodox Church since it was not blessed by an Orthodox Priest, maybe I am being over zealous? I can't think of any Catholics to give it to but I don't want to just dump it down the toilet, that seems inappropriate as well. I don't know, any ideas, just personal opinion what would you do?

Yeah I would say water your plants that way you won't be disposing of it disresectfully (my grandmother actually puts a few drops of holy water into her watering can), unless you have an RC friend who would be willing to take it without being offended that your giving it away.

My Priest poured extra holy water that was taking too much space in the church under a tree outside.

You could open the bottle and let it evaporate.

This is sort of what I was first thinking, since since it it the same as I would so if it was 'extra' Holy Water from an EO Church I was worried it might appear that I was caring equally for a mystery from a non-orthodoxy church. But then when I type that I feel kind of silly, after all it has been blessed in the name of the Trinity so who really cares who did the actually blessing...
I'd kind of like to pour it over my steering wheel, I could use a little extra Holy on the road, it is scary out there lately!!

I'd just say be respectful and that we do not know where the grace of God is not. Perhaps it doesn't need to be treated as our Holy Water, but I would not deliberately disrespect RC HW.

Good idea. Certainly Cassc wants to treat the gift with respect so as to honor the giver's sincere intent. Another idea is that perhaps Cassc could ask her priest to bless the water directly so it's copacetic for Orthodox use? Just a thought.

What?
Do you people realize that once Holy Water is poured into normal water, all the water is now Holy?

We've been EO for 11 years and he's always given the left over blessed water to the dog. Of course, he probably feels our dog needs all the help he can get! Really!

Do you make sure the dog drinks all the water, and you don't throw any out, or refill it before he does?

If he hasn't drunk all the water by morning we put what's left in the bowl on a live plant.

So the consensus here is that RC Holy water may or may not really be Holy, and because we don't know we should add Orthodox Holy water to it just to make sure?

That's what I said...that is how you can never run out of Holy Water, just put a little bit in normal water, and wala, it's Holy Water...this also work's for Holy Oil, BTW..

I think it's important not to look at this as 'magic' that works under our control, that all Holy Water is Holy because God makes it so.

I've wanted to rep you twice in this thread but alas the rep monkies wouldn't let me.
I agree, it seems like we are treating this like magic.
Cassc... it's really not a big deal. just water a plant or a tree with it. The Tree will thank you and God will thank you for not keeping the water cooped up in a bottle for ever (or just letting it evaporate which seems.... kind of pointless).
I would say this too: It's either Holy water or its not. No matter how ill-mannered one may think of the Catholic Church, it's not like the water is cured. I mean, what was it blessed in the name of? Satan? Allah? No, the name of the Trinity. I mean, worst case scenario the blessing didn't "take". Either way, it's still water.

Holy water has been known to cure ailments and bring about other miraculous events. the tradition is as old as Christianity. It's really a manifestation of the Church's belief that God has blessed material and that it is Holy. In reality, it's recongizing that all gifts from God are holy and that in order for them to have positive effects, we need, as a people, to realize that matter is Holy... that in a way it's been divinized by the Incarnation. (Note, matter is not God... but God's energies can be IN matter). So, it's like water set aside that is recognized as Holy and also, because it has been blessed, seems to have special miraculous nad often healing properties. But, that said, it shouldn't be regarded as magic. In the end, GOD does has HE wills and his Grace is not forced out of Him.
I guess in the end Holy (blessed) Water is kind of an age-old mystery

I like the way my Priest will refer refer to it a "restored water" , having been blessed & regaining the holiness & purity that ALL creation enjoyed before the fall.

So, I'm guessing maybe that's why you ask the priest to bless you as well?

The correct Roman Catholic way to dispose of Holy Water is to bury it. Dig a hole, pour it in, and put the soil back in. Same goes for any sacramental - burn it or bury it.

Hello all! Christ is risen!
Wow, these responses are hilarious! What is the fear, really, that the R.C. holy water, because it was not "consecrated" properly, will consume us like wildfire?! I don't think so.
The question remains: are blessings conducted in the Roman Church, sacramental and otherwise, valid in the eyes of God? I don't know --- maybe we should ask Him, if we dare.
Theologically, we run into the danger here of applying quantitative parameters to grace (this is an oxymoron; there is no such thing). In other words, holy water in the E.O.C. is "more holy" than in the R.C.C.
Nevertheless, my pastoral advice (I could go on theologically forever here!) would be to respect the holy water and perhaps use it to sanctify the creation around you (a potted plant, a garden, etc.).
On a lighter note, if that plant or flower begins growing by leaps and bounds, hmmm . . . ;)

Just to be clear, my suggestion of letting the water evaporate is not a judgment on the water's sanctity or lack thereof. I was just making a suggestion.
And letting the water evaporate returns it to creation just as much as pouring it does. Some plant, dog or person will benefit from it at some point :)

Well I started this thread then I wasn't able to get to my computer for a while so I apologize for abandoning it!
So I think that general idea is that for general purposes I was over reacting by worrying about the 'holiness' or lack thereof of Catholic Holy water! so silly , I hadn't really given it a second though when it was given to me but then it was sitting on my kitchen table and I was thinking well I don't know what I was thinking :confused:
thanks for all of the replies. I did not know that you could mix Holy water with regular water to make it all Holy, interesting :)

That is really good to know, I can't imagine when I would ever need to create large quantities of either but it is good to know that in a pinch (or an emergency) I could!
