Wednesday night I was teaching the confirmands about the elements in the Lord's supper and I let them taste the bread and wine so they would know what to expect when they receive the Lord's Supper for the first time.
There are three of them, but one girl is extremely allergic to alcohol (she can't even be around someone who is wearing perfume), so only two of them tasted the wine. I gave it to them in the little shot glasses (don't get me started). The simultaneously drank it, made the most horrific faces, and made a mad dash out of the sanctuary, down the stairs, through the fellowship hall, and into the kitchen for water.
It was hilarious!!

One of the great American movie legends. One of the greats.
"Wayne came to symbolize political conservatism and a dedication to country. His stand against communism during the Cold War was so influential that Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin plotted to assassinate him, according to Michael Munn (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1800193484)'s 2005 biography "John Wayne: The Man Behind the Myth." Wayne famously said, "I always thought I was a liberal. I came up terribly surprised one time when I found out that I was a right-wing conservative extremist."

When I do the Trinitarian invocation at the beginning the congregation will stand. I announce the text and then have them sit. At the end after I say "Amen" they stand again for the closing prayer. Then I seat them again. It's a tradition that this congregation has. I have been in others that do it too, but not all do.

Hope everyone had a happy Memorial Day Weekend.
My parents came over so my dad could use our work bench. He does reloading and wanted to make his shells smaller for the new gun he has, and our bench is heavy enough to handle his equipment, or something like that. I made German potato salad and grilled burgers and corn on the cob for dinner. Husband got home from work as we finished eating.
He's worked 72 hours from last Monday to yesterday. His only day off was Saturday. Granted the O/T pay is very, very nice, I'm kind of worried about him. He works this evening, so he can sleep in a little today.

I do my best to be much more obedient now, but sometimes the path He would have me on is not so apparent and the thought of screwing up brings the memory of the pain of being hammered to the surface.
I remember in college doing a study of the way God leads us. The verse that stuck in my mind is "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." (which was also a popular CCM song at the time, so it makes it easier for me to remember)
I grew up in a Scouting family, and usually spent summers at camp (dad worked at a Boy Scout camp). I had early experience with using a flashlight to light the path in front of me. The thing I remember most from this study is that image... and the fact that the light really only lights the next step, or the next two. It doesn't light the whole path. That's still in darkness, or is dim. And when you come to a branch in the path, you see only the branch... the choices... not where they lead.
God leads us step by step, illuminating our path as we trust in Him. But He doesn't always give us a detailed map of where we're going. Sometimes I'd like to see the Big Hand with its Laser Pointer of Illumination showing me exactly where I'm supposed to go... but that's just not how He works most of the time.
So I thank Him for the lamp for my next step, and let Him worry about the rest of the path.

My husband loves potatoes and bacon, and hates anything with mayonnaise. He comes from a family with some German background, but he'd never had GPS until I made it for him. I wanted potato salad, but knew he wouldn't eat it if I made it with mayo. We had GPS a lot growing up (my Dad's family was very German), so it was like a taste of home. He really liked it, too.

Just can't take that bio-diesel I guess...;) Actually, anything with soy at all is on my can't-have list. Sadly, that includes chocolate. I like GPM, cold though, not hot. GrandMum used to make it all the time. She also used to make a fried cookie that I forget the name of. They were wonderful.

You can make it yourself and use a different oil. Here's what's supposed to be a good, easy recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_16262,00.html
If mayo isn't the main ingredient I taste, I will use it in cooking (makes cakes suprisingly moist), but I can't stand the taste of traditional mayo/mustard potato salad.
I have the same problem as you with beans - all beans cooked in almost every way, the only exception being string beans. I can have them in very tiny amounts, and I have to make sure I chew thoroughly and make sure there's an antacid nearby - it's just easier to omit completely.

i know we had $100,000 raised from BEFORE the night began, and i know that did not include what some of the schools had done for fundraisers, etc -- that was just registrations and online donations, etc
i know the school i was at probably raised $8000+ -- we did a run/walk, $2 a friday for teachers to wear jeans (x45+ staff, x12 weeks), plus other fundraisers during the year that all raised $500+

One can only hope that jail might actually do her some good. I doubt that she even knows the meaning of dicipline or having to sacrifice something, but she will have a small education now.

Well, I am glad they sent her back. These young starlets who are famous for being famous are pulling all sorts of stunts that get them in trouble and then get their hands slapped. Then we wonder why our own kids think they can do anything and not pay the consequences.
Now if she has a medical need that would be a need for her to be released, proper channels need to be followed.
Reading the story of her being sent back, she cries "it's not right" and "Mom". This is one time where Mom can't control it.
It is not right that she was driving under the influence and violating her parole.
Now, she and all her contemporaries are in my prayers that they can get their act together and become responsible adults.
Ok, guess you now know what I think.

Very well put, QA.
Such unproductive young adults are used to their parents' money paying their way into or out of anything they want.

I heard the medical reason was that she wasn't eating the jail food. If she thinks that is bad she should have to live for 15 monthes on what I ate in Viet Nam. That was real garbage. I only weighed 145 pounds when I came home. The food was so greasy that most of it was unedible. C-rations were a treat, and in 1968 when I was over there, they were from 1945-1955. Nothing new for sure.

Hi seajoy! Great to see you again.
Other than the poolside baptism and Harry Potter (they are making a theme park for him), DaRev is heading out on vacation - seems he is visiting family in StL and then sneaking into Texas to be a fill in Pastor at Porter's church. It seems to be quite the topic.
Well, I need to do things around here, that laundry pile seems to be growing as well as other stuffs.

First going to Colorado to see my brand new grandbaby. THEN it's off to St. Louie to see my other son and grandson. Then on to Texas. But I would hardly call it "sneaking." That would presume that no one knows I'm coming, and I hardly think that's the case... right, Porter? ;)

Last sunday I went to my old church, today I went to another one. I may stick with this one, going to go again next sunday to it, the regular pastor wasn't there. They have a retired pastor going there and he did the sermon and service. He first got up there and said he was celebrating his 44th aniversary of his 39th birthday. All in all he gave a good sermon. This is the church where I went with on the trips to Biloxi and New Orleans. I was talking today to one of the people that went on the trip. I asked him if there was another trip in the process, he said there's been just talk and since our pastor left that they said something about not asking the ones that's been on the trip at our church to come but he told me I'd be more than welcome to come if they did one. They started this church that I had been going to and since its grown some since it started, I think they are trying to break away. Both youth groups used to get together all the time at either church but they hadn't done that in over a year. Like I said I'm going to go back next sunday

Something about being in between pastors and not knowing what's going to happen with the church.
dinkime

that seems like a weird excuse...now is a time the church without a pastor needs the most support and by continueing to include the members, that would be happening...odd....

10th June 2007, 07:57 PM
The pastor that just left this church I've been going to did his vicarage at the other church. They may be thinking on the lines about if the church gets another pastor soon, the pastor may not want to be involved with the other one, I think they just want to see what happens. I think it would be neat even if the youth in the circuit would get together to do something once a month.
dinkime
10th June 2007, 08:19 PM
even if a new pastor dies not want the ties as much, i would think right NOW, though, without a pastor, they would want to help now...
i hope that things improve a little and that the youth start doing more together -- i know from doing our youthgroup that it is hard enough to get the kids at ONE church together, let alone 2 or more! -- and the youth doing things together is a great step in keeping the churches doing other things together as well

Another 2 1/2 years to go--that's the protocol. It takes 3 1/2 years, on average, to treat boys. It's only another 3 days of steroids for this month. He's been hungry for oatmeal the last few days. Add in a growth spurt, and he's also not happy because the weather finally got warm here and he's not allowed to go to the swimming pool until next week. He fell down and conked his head on a rock this weekend. Blood all over, trip to ER, one staple in his scalp. Typical boy.

Ok from reading some of this I have a question. In my church, it's nothing to have 600-800 there for a service. Our pastor gives communion, but also has elders give communion, so there can be multiple lines and it not take up almost all of the service. Are most of you saying that's wrong?
We're getting an assoc. pastor (actually he used to be in my original Bible Study when I started going, I'm kind of excited about that), and there are a couple of pastors in the congregation. So, when our pastor is out, there's no problem having a pastor take his place, and I think they all help out during communion on any Sunday. I think I remember only one Sunday where our Director of Worship Arts, who is a DCE, did the service, but there was no communion in that service.
porterross

Did your pastor take another call?
No, he's out of state helping his mother move and sell her house and the other LCMS pastor in the area will also be on vacation for the next 2 week.
Unless there is an ordained pastor to bless the elements there can be no communion, but our elders also help distribute. Of course, I much prefer to receive both elements from a pastor, which will happen this Sunday for the first time since I was in England.
Rev's system allows for him to distribute both the host and the chalice while the elder distributes the individual cups. Being a traditionalist, it will mean a great deal to me to be able to receive both elements from an ordained man.
