Hello to all! I had a very dear friend of mine to call me this morning to tell me that she is moving to TN. She said they are moving to a mennenite (sorry if I spelled that wrong) community. I am very confused by this. She also said that it was an Amish community. Just wondering if Mennenite and Amish and Anabaptist are connected? If so please explain to me. Thanks for your help.

Amish and Mennonite are both churches within the Anabaptist community.
The Amish are an off-shoot of Mennonites. The Amish are distinguished from Mennonites by their strict adherence to a doctrine of separation, by their belief that outside of the Amish church there is no salvation, and their culture and language. Amish will sometimes accept people from outside their community if the people are willing to shun society, give up most modern conveniences, adhere to a strict dress code, accept male dominanation over the family, the church and the community and follow all the doctrines and rules during a proving period, usually one to ten years.
Up at the top of this forum, there is a sticky thread that discusses who the Mennonites are, and the wiki has a number of articles about Mennonite beliefs and traditions.

The Amish divided off the Mennonites long ago, mainly over differences in the strictness of applying church discipline against erring members. Most people identify primitive technology with the Amish, but there are as many Old Order Mennonites who use horse and buggy transporation and practice varying degrees of low tech living.
There is also such a thing as the "Amish Mennonites", primarily groups that split off from the Old Order Amish, The largest Amish Mennonite group would be the Beachy Amish. They are car driving, not opposed to the use of technology in general, quite conservative in dress and lifestyle. Nice folks all in all. I hope your friend does well.

Thanks for the replies! Please pray for them. They are really good people but seem to drift from one religion to the other.
