Years ago I taught the seniors Sunday school class at a local Southern Baptist Church. The class was taught in the sanctuary because it was the largest class. The church building was slightly over 100 years old and that was close to the average age of the membership (kidding here). Well, they each had their place in the pews, scattered all over the large sanctuary and they refused to move up or gather together, they just came in and took their place. I had to teach using a microphone and did more walking than a work-out requires.
Chairs are not only better, they can be rearranged in different patterns making claiming one of them impossible.
I know of a church that has three patterns for the chairs, one with a center isle, one with two isles and one with three. They use the room for multi purpose and set it back up in one of the three different patterns just to keep the folks moving around a bit.
That's my 2 cents on chairs.

That's kind of limited. We don't sit in our Church. We stand for the entire service.
However, seeing as this is supposed to be a debate...
1. Sitting is seen as an offense when done in the presence of a king if he has not invited you to do so. One would never sit to pay homage to a king.
2. Psalm 1 puts sitting as part of a negative progression away from Godly character.
3. Jesus said "And whenever you stand praying..." Mark 11:25
Peace.
Peter
P.S. I hope this was intended as a light hearted "debate", cause that's how I took it.

How about tread mills and bike machines? That would be an awesome church. Get your soul and body in shape at the same time :D

Lotar,
You want a great anaroebic workout in church? Try standing rooted to the same spot, standing, for 4 hours. It's called Pascha and it's done every year. Did I mention it goes from about 11:45 PM to 4 in the morning. Talk about fatigue!
Peace.

Peter, when I went to the vigil of the Annunciation, we stood for over 6 hours. There were some chairs there, but they are given to the elderly and sick or if someone has a medical condition.
My vote is, if there has to be pews or chairs....definitely chairs. Of course, one of the monasteries I attended has a sort of "stall" type thing attached to the walls. The seat folds down, and there are seperaters between you and the person beside you. I actually liked this, because I was able to stay more focused in my thoughts.

Chairs, because they can be re-arrnaged if needed. But comfy chairs with well padded seats, arm rest and a wide back rest.
BTW, I like the tread mill idea too:D

I say pews. I attend a Catholic Church and the way the Mass is, pews are awesome. Kneeling for the consecration is more appropriate than standing. (Although there are quite many Catholic churches with chairs now, it's not the same..) :priest:

Chairs can allow for more people, because people have to spread out in a pew, but then again you can spread out in a pew--having room for your bible, coat, cell phone and wot-nots

Preferably Pews with kneelers, in a church such as mine, with a liturgy such as mine. However, in a church like the one down the street and its liturgy, deffinately chairs!! Or maybe even throw some pillows on the ground and just let everyone go nuts. So it is all relative.
