Scary thing is I almost picked up this brand to try a few days ago but I scour the ingredients a lot before I buy because it can be what I call 'saw dust' even if they claim who knows what on the package.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Natural Balance Pet Foods recalled two kinds of pet food after receiving reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.
The recall includes all date codes of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food.
The company does not know the cause of the problem, but said it is focused on one particular lot.
Natural Balance Pet Foods is working with the FDA to investigate the matter and is urging consumers to not feed either pet food product to their animals.
Last month, Menu Foods recalled 60 million cans of dog and cat food after the deaths of 16 pets, mostly cats, that ate its products. (Details on recall (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/02/recall.links/index.html))
The FDA said tests indicated the food was contaminated with an industrial chemical, melamine.
At least six pet food companies have recalled products made with imported Chinese wheat gluten tainted with the chemical. The recall involved about 1 percent of the U.S. pet food supply.
FDA spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said the agency had no indication that the Natural Balance case is related to the melamine problem.

Nutro's website states that dry Nutro dogfoods are safe, but that the wet or moist ones might not be safe. I only feed mine dry dogfood and so their food it not effected by this horor.

I only buy purina cat chow... My cats will eat some of the canned food if I would give it to them but they get sick on them.... sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't make them their own food. It is so scary about food safety now days.

I have been feeling the same way but my cats don't really care for "people foods". Supposedly the major pet supply stores have pulled all effected products off their shelves so anything you buy now is not part of previous recalls, the problems as Jenny points out new problem keep coming up...

Yes, I heard about the new problems. Then we had just purchased Nutro dry cat food for our two cats when another scare happened. That site says that dry food is safe. So I hope we are okay for now. I've been feeding Friskies and Purina to my cats all along... so hopefully that was okay. I'm scared what they will say next about this! And I'm really worried they will change their labels, but package some of the same stuff in it so we don't know. I guess I have a hard time trusting large companies.

Nutro's site says their dry food is safe, which is good, because it is the only food I have ever fed my dogs.

I never fed my pets canned pet food or any kind of pet food. My hubby's dog eats food that we make specially for him, and my kitty ate what i made for her.

Making your own pet food is good on the short term, not on the long term.

They might have found that some corn glutein contains melamine too, but it hasn't been found in the US yet. There is also now a possibility that this might have been done intentionally to boost the protein content of the food (apparently the melamine does that in the burn tests they do) and the Chinese are saying that they never intended the wheat gluten for pet food. What then, humans??? Bioterrorists...

That is all we need, a bio-terrorist to strike this country.

I have been so sick this year all of a sudden, since January, and I'm beginning to wonder if a bioterrorist or some such hasn't already struck. :o What is with all of these viruii/viruses going around lately?

Ughhh, I'm so tired of being sickly.
