Ok Rev....or anyone else here...please, explain this line from the Palm Sunday ELCA service I attended this morning.
"If you give God your best, He will give you His best, too!"

Just curious, as I've never heard that line in a sermon before.

Uh, God giving me His best is not dependent on me giving Him my best. God gave me His best. Because He gave me His best I want to give Him my best. Now, I am asserting that God's best is Jesus.

What they meant, I have no clue. Sounds a little like good works to me.

Sounds like something the Anabaptist minister here in Lewiston, or the Nazerine pastor in Weaverville would say. It's totally Law. Backwards too. God has already given us his best. Even when we were not only not giving our best we didn't give a da... um, ah, darn.:o

Well Revrand, since you couldn't be the last, might as well be first.;) :D

Glad you liked the flowers Porteross.
I've some oncidiums sending out spikes here in my office. They didn't bloom last year, in fact the one plant hasn't blossomed for three years. Lots of growth, no spikes. Now, if the Dendrobium-Phaeleanopsis blooms, I'll count myself very fortuneate. I look back at my mother's patio in Garden Grove and feel a little guilty about how many of her orchids that have died on me. When I left Orange County and moved inland they just didn't do well. Pity, that. Some of them were just gorgeous. She had literally hundreds of plants on that little patio. Of that, I have four left. Actually, where I live now, it's a minor miracle that any at all have survived. I'll gratefully take all the blessings and miracles that are offered.

Speaking of miracles, the humming-birds have returned in force to Lewiston. I've never seen so many! I love humming-birds. making the solution is expensive, but what a reward.:) I put one feeder outside and have had between ten and twenty hummers buzzing around it all week. It's facinating watching them hover around till they can get a spot at the feeding stations. I never knew we had such a variety of them here. There's ruby throated and green of course. There are also some that are a golden red. I've never seen hummers that colour. Beautiful!

Hmm.. well, from looking at the ELCA lectionary (http://www.elca.org/worship/church_year/year_c.html) for yesterday.. MAYBE the Philippians lesson:

5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

That is, that our attitude should be the same as Christ's, humble and obedient to God ("giving God our best").

Or perhaps the section in the first Luke reading:

...
24Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel...

But without more explanation than just the phrase you used, I'm rather leary of the message. The focus seems really off to me.

Thanks for looking that up.:)

There was no mention of law in the entire sermon...at all. I felt empty after the service. I still feel yucky inside. No talk of why Jesus had to come to save me. The one thing going to that service did for me, was to help me see that I need the comfort of hearing both law and gospel each time I'm in church. Am I weird....or do I think about things too much maybe?

Lest I get in trouble here...I suppose I should not talk anymore about it. I just look forward to being at my own church for the rest of Holy Week. :groupray:

I am so thankful the seajoy has this thread! I have done a fair amount of wandering about the internet lately. Bad thing for sure. In the last few days I have learned that I am a heretic, believe in universalism and may even be a member of a cult! Can someone tell me when all the meanings changed? I seem to have missed that memo. Ok, they are strangely quiet on what they think about Lutherans per se. They almost have to be though. After all, their faith systems would probably would not be were it not for Luther and his contemporaries!

Glad to have a place on the internet where I can come back to good ole Lutheran teaching and fellowship.

On a happier note, we attended a performance of the Golden Dragon Acrobats from China and it was just plain awesome (if you know me, awesome is not a word I use much). It hurt to watch some of the moves these very limber people made.

seajoy, those of us who feel as you do seem to be a minority anymore. How sad is that?

I have had discussions with people who feel that the Gospel does not need to be proclaimed each week. What is up with that? Oh, that is right, there is a thread going on that here in this subforum.

Well, what is on your schedule this week?

Me, cleaning and more cleaning. My mother-in-law and a niece are coming for Easter as well as my son. That means I need to get two bedrooms ready as well as put clutter away and clean.

The sun is actually shining today! I really needed that boost.

Hmm. I may look into that. I tried to use Portals of Prayer for a while, but it got so.. repetative after a time. Maybe I'm just used to more and varied themes in devotional books. I felt like rolling my eyes like my daughter does when I read the story of Moses or Joseph ONE MORE TIME.

The "other thread" about law and gospel really hit home with me, because I find that I am guilty of thinking "Okay, I get the gospel part -- Jesus died for my sins. Now give me something more."

There is nothing more. Just deeper ways of understanding that same message. It's a mental shift in how I think about the Bible and the message God gives us through it.

It really struck me the other day when I was watching Godspell with my daughter. It's based on Matthew, and does a fairly good job of illustrating Jesus' parables (she especially loves the Prodigal Son section). But the Law was only hinted at and the Gospel was glossed over. Five years ago that wouldn't have bothered me much. Now it does.

Visiting my rhuematologist, cleaning my house (kids are coming home to help tear down our old deck, and celebrate Easter).

My hubby is hoping to take thursday and friday off (with his work, you never know). We plan on attending all 4 services that our church is offering the rest of this week.

So I guess the next time I actually talk with my daughter I need to ask her how to pronounce Smalcald in German?

I can tell you we don't pronounce Augsburg the way the Germans do. I can't even say it the way they do. It is the burg part that I struggle with.

So I am content to use the English pronunciations.

It is a wonderful thing. I've done things I've never done before. Who'd ever think I'd get in front of a bunch of people and speak. I did the readings yesterday. I'm not one that gets up in front of people. I was a little nervous when I first got up there. I said a little prayer in my head, all I said was Lord please help me, I calmed down quickly, got louder and was not scared and didn't need my paper bag.

You know, that's one thing I miss terribly. I'm not sure how to spell the name, but I belive it's called the perecofie system (or maybe pericophie). Spelling has never been my strong suit. Still, it's nice to have the old and new testiment tied together that way. Many churches teach only out of the New Testament and lose so much in the process.

I hope to go down to Redding for church this week. We'll see what happens.

Yeah, I have been there plenty of times so if I have to spend many hours there, say when I take a group of exchange students there, I go to a movie. Hi everyone! Thanks for the welcomes!

I LOVE my kids. They're great kids. Believe it or not, this will be my 19th year of teaching the 7th & 8th grades. Some of my first students are married and have kids. (while I go on being unmarried and [happily] child free. Not that I don't LOVE kids...I'm just happier giving 'em back! :)) One of my first students was just ordained last Fall. I'm so proud of them all but he made me cry. He told me that I was one of the people instrumental in him heeding the Call. *sniff*

I have fun teaching this age, I guess 'cause I've never really "grown up" myself. They sure do keep me on my toes though. I've devised a list of "Classroom Comfort Conditions" and they all pretty much abide by them. They know if they don't, they'll be sent to Pastor's class and he tends to single them out during the Sermon (to answer questions) if they should show up for being "bad". They don't like that at ALL so...they behave. I've never had to send a kid to Pastor's class in my 19 years...but they all know what will happen if I do! :D

Last night, our Sunday School director, who is also the President of the Woman's Guild, asked me if I would consider being the Spiritual Life Coordinator for the WG! I was flabbergasted but said that I'd pray over it and let her know. I'm leaning toward doing it but...that shyness thing is rearing its ugly head. Perhaps I need to reread the story of Moses. Right? :D

Gosh, it's so nice to be welcomed by you all! I've never known just how to "jump in" and all...but my kids rescue me again! I'll try and participate more! I promise! :D

Our Pastor's wife tells the story of when she was teaching that age. The congregation was meeting in a school building while the church was under construction. Pastor's adult Sunday School was in one part of the building and the middle school kids were in another. Pat had been called in to tame the unruly kids, because the woman who had volunteered just couldn't control them.

Pat only had to bellow once. Pastor heard her on the other side of the school building, and just smiled. The kids didn't act up again.

There are certain things one learns by being the wife of an army chaplain... *snickers*

I LOVE my kids. They're great kids. Believe it or not, this will be my 19th year of teaching the 7th & 8th grades. Some of my first students are married and have kids. (while I go on being unmarried and [happily] child free. Not that I don't LOVE kids...I'm just happier giving 'em back! ) One of my first students was just ordained last Fall.

I promise! :D

Kae

I absolutely love teaching kids that age level. They're old enough to have a conversation with and yet young enough to still want to learn. For the most part, the "attitudes" are not yet in play.

Besides, I better love it because I'm going to be locked in a farm house with about 20 of them the weekend after Easter. That's our confirmation retreat weekend.
But it's all good. There'll be enough adults around, including three other pastors, to keep them in line... and keep me sane! :P

No kidding. I saw that on the weather today. I looked pretty scary, but this seems to be the year for it as we've all been hit with some bad storms this spring.

It was 86 here today, so of course it will rain soon. They are forcasting highs in the 60's this weekend, but we are supposed to get hammered with rain tomorrow through Friday.

our church does 2 youth retreats a year with the other WELS/ELS churches in the state/area -- one for 6-9th graders and one for 9-12th graders, the 9th graders are lucky & can do both!!

our Pastor also takes the group of confirmation kids every other year (i think) to wisconsin -- they go to the prep school, synod offices, colleges & the seminary -- the best part of sem is seeing our pastor's picture from his graduation year! lol

health has to do with your # of posts in relation to how long you have been a member -- 100% health is an average of 3 posts per day -- i took a huge break from here for awhile, so my health is lower -- it is hard to make up like 2+ years worth of 3 posts a day!

Some of us are online all day for work anyway so it's easy to pop in and see what's going on. Of course, in my case, it might have a wee bit to do with some ordained guy with dimples who frequents this spot as well.

Hi all! I went down to Redding yesterday and it was in the upper nineties and muggy. We've had no rain for almost two weeks and that's bad. It means very little water down river and my well doesn't get recharged. Normally, it's raining a lot this time of year. That worries me as my well was completely dry for most of August and September last year. I'm tempted to cut down all the trees within fifty feet of it. That usually does the trick, so I'm told. Hopefully I won't be here to worry about it.

Welcome aboard, Hummie. I like your name. My favourite bird is Humming Birds. Right now, they're mobbing the feeder on my porch. I get between ten and twenty at a time for a four station feeder. They like my cooking!;) I hope you've got a skin like a rinocerous, because we get a bit toasty here from time to time. This thread is usually quite tame. Watch out in the common room though. It can get painfully sharp in there.

Angel, one might suspect you of insuating that those of us who spend a lot of time here, need to get a life. AND IT'S TRUE! Just kidding.;)

This forum, actually, has been a Godsend for me. It has been getting me back into my Bible more than I've been for some time. So my sincere thanks to everyone here.

I had the neatest thing happen today. I came home for lunch and was doing the dishes when two humming Birds flew up to the window. They kept dodging back and forth in front of the window till I leant forward to see what they were up to. Then they flew straight up and out of sight. I turned round to see what the activity at the feeder was and they were circling the empty feeder. Then they went straight up out of sight. I heard a tapping at the window and turned round. There they were again. As soon as I looked at them they flew straight up and over again to the feeder and proceeded to circle it again. It's like they were saying, "Hey, we're hungry and the buffet is empty!" I've never come across such bold and, actually, friendly Humming Birds.

Welcome Hummie! Glad to have you here. CF can be very confusing at times, but you'll get a feel for it if you just hang out here long enough.

Something that helped me a LOT when I joined was to go to my Control Panel at the top of the page, and go to Edit Options. About three screens down you'll see some options to add titles and URLs for the "Custom Navbar". As you find forums on CF that you want to participate in, put their URL as one of your custom navbar URLs. That way, it will show up on the top of your screen each time you visit, and will act as a quick shortcut to the forums you visit the most.

Look forward to getting to know you as you post

SC, if the shoe fits, wear it!

Seriously, This place has given me fellowship with other Christians who happen to be Lutheran. I live in a small rural area where my wonderful husband happens to be a Pastor. Those who live in low populated areas know what I mean. Now as a PW, it is not easy to have a place to go to where I am "me." I have been able to do that here. I don't hear how horrible Pastor so and so is, or why doesn't Pastor so an so do this or why does he. I don't have to listen to people wonder about my "weird" kids. They aren't weird, just chose not to participate in sports and they love to travel and experience many things.

Studeclunker, I love Hummers too. My Mom has little males that will follow her around if she's outside and the feeder is empty. They also will go from window to window looking for her...they know the difference between her and my Dad and will keep looking for her even if Dad fills the feeder.

Thanks for all the welcomes and all the tips. I will have to try that navbar if I can. It seems these pages take a long time to load and I have a fast connection. I'm spoiled I guess and not used to waiting, oh, 2 seconds! lol

I love birds too, but grew wearing of attracting hummingbirds. In our area, the come twice a year for about two weeks and it does not seem worth the work to keep up the feeders for such a short time.

My internet nickname is in honor of my grandparents and the meaning can be found on my website on the "about me" tab. ..if anyone is interested. The needing so many posts before you can post links is to make sure that a member signs up to participate, not to post SPAM. Those people pop up all over the place.

*chuckles* I know how trying to get that post count up can be frustrating. I understand why they make the limitations -- to stop spammers who come in, make an account, and plaster links and threads all over the place. All in all, though, 15 posts isn't hard to do.

In fact, there are a couple forums where you can get your post count up fairly quickly. I hang out in Prayer Requests, and New Members, for instance. I started there primarily to raise my post count, but now I really enjoy welcoming folks and praying for them. Some of the blessing exchange threads grow faster than you can imagine. There's even "Chat with Chrisbot" in which you can post questions and responses to CF's resident programbot, and raise your post count very quickly.

Yes, thank you. Brothers 1 and 2 didn't fight, or even talk much. Brothers 2 and 3 got along famously, and even talked politics Hunter, who is number 2, is more and more amazed at how similar he and his elder brother think about some things, now that they're talking about them. He used to think he was the outcast. Now brother 1 is, if anyone is)

The ham was huge, the broccoli salad was a hit, there was too much food, the autistic niece was fairly settled and I even got a few hugs and kisses from her through the evening, and I got most of a samurai sudoko started while folks talked.

We got home and our homeless friends are still here.. they've been here since Friday helping on the playset, but we're really feeling the stress of hosting so long. They're staying one more night.

Gem stayed at her grandma's for the evening, and both Hunter and I have tomorrow off, so we can start cleaning the house in preparation for her birthday party next weekend. Plus we're having lunch with Pastor and his wife tomorrow, which is something we're lookign forward to.

So as soon as I finish this (very strong) vodka and diet pepsi, I'm off to bed.

Hugs to all.
Sounds like a great day, Synger. I think we'll all sleep well tonight, as active as we all seemed to be.

They used to be so vital to the congregation when I was young. It's a shame that personalities and egos can be allowed to become so destructive to so many others as well as ourselves.

So happy to hear this and I hope they continue to go.

Wow it sounds like everyone had very blessed Easters!

Yesterday we, the congregation, received a surprise...our new pew Bibles and LSBs came in early and were dedicated yesterday! I'm so excited. We'll start using them next Sunday.

I also made a decision about a "position" I was offered in the Women's Guild. The president asked if I would be the new "Spiritual Life Coordinator" for the group. It's sort of a new position and, after praying about it, I feel that I'd enjoy serving in that way.

Mom was sick with a stomach bug this weekend so we'll be having Easter dinner on Friday when my Sister and her family come up. So looking forward to the ham. :D

Have a happy day everyone!

Places I've found missing library books:

Check the laundry basket of half-folded items that's next to your chair in the living room, to make sure it didn't get bumped off the table into it and then covered by laundry
Check under the couch, where it might have gotten kicked when the husband and daughter came romping through
Check in your "library bag" -- you may actually have put it where it needs to be and then forgotten it
Check under the passenger's seat of your car, where it slid off the seat and onto the floor when you braked too hard
Check beside your bed, under the stack of other books and magazines you've been meaning to put away when you get five minutes to do it

Think like a woman??? LOL! My son is like that! Drives me nuts! I might leave a book or two lying around, but not for long. Through middle and High School, I worked in the Library. All my books are in order according to author and either fiction or non-fiction. My son does get them back into the office, if I'm lucky. Usually he tosses them in the middle of one of the book cases.:sigh: Then he hears me when I come in, "Bloody, buggery, lazy.... gripe, gripe gripe..." Doesn't do any good to gripe to him. He still won't put them back right. When one has several hundred books, organization is essential. I love books.

Thank you all again for your generosity. The kindness was greatly appreciated. I may not have any money, but I'm still a rich man. Here anyway.

Good news! Got paid today for the first time in months! The job is going along swimmingly and the boss seems to like my work. Thanks again for all the moral support and for putting up with me. Hopefully things will go like C.S. Lewis puts it, "When things are going badly it just seems like they will never get better. But when it all turns around, things just seem to get better and better." I so love the Narnia series.

Tea?:) Is someone pouring out? May I have a cup? Just one lump please.

Seajoy, it's just handyman work. Still, I'm remodeling a room for a lady. She's picking everything out and deciding what's being done. I'm responsible for making it happen. The wiring is finished and I'll be assembling a Wilson truss in the existing rafters this week. It's just diagonal bracing that looks like a big W that's kind of flattened out. The current framework just has straight braces and the ceiling is sagging a bit. I wish her son hadn't taken the original ceiling down. Gosh, what a mess! The P.O. had put in the blown type of insulation. The stuff is ok, untill it's disturbed. Yikes! Anyway, I've finished the sub-floor for the carpeting and am inserting more studs in the walls. We have a fairly light snow-load here, still 24" on centre is just a bit... weak. Now it's thoroughly over built at 12" on centre. an Ah-nold wall! As soon as the fireblocking is finished, I'll be installing the Ceiling (drywall with pine bordering instead of plastering the seams), and the pecky cedar (toungue and groove) paneling. So the job should last for the next month. She's also hinting that they may want me to help put up the garage as well. so I just may be busy here for some time.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise him all creatures here below,
Praise to the Lord you heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

Insurance agents as well. My dad, who is long retired, was recruited by a friend of his to do home instections for an insurance agent. My dad is a carpenter/mason/electrician/plumber/etc. by trade. Tell me about it. Gem's 6th birthday is this Saturday, and we were hoping for good weather so the kids could play on the new playset and use sidewalk chalk and paints and bubbles.. and now they're forecasting rain.

Synger....how did your visit go the other day?
Very, very well. I had prayed that it would. Hunter really just needed to sit down with Pastor and talk over his concerns, as did I. One of the thing he said, that we hadn't really considered, was that we know more Lutheran doctrine than some of the life-long Lutherans in the church. We may not agree 100 percent on every jot and tittle (though the percentage keeps growing), but we by and large recognize what is correct Lutheran doctrine and what is not, and we accept the Scriptures behind it. We agree on the theology of the Cross, and on the Word and Sacrament, and the means of Grace. The rest will come in time.

So probably in the next month or so I'll be able to take "Permanent Visitor" off my icon. It's a much bigger deal to me than to Hunter, actually. He's from a strictly congregational polity background, where he has no problem joining a church or not, or being a permanent visitor. I'm from a background where you join not just this particular congregation, but this denomination -- history, doctrine, liturgy and all. He's looking for a home congregation. I'm looking for a whole community of faith. I've visited a lot of denominations, and participated heavily in their congregational life. But I've never before been convinced that I can no longer "be Presbyterian." So this is a really big deal for me.
