I'm just thinking, and typing here at the same time......but as others have mentioned before.........I sometimes wish we just had a confessional Lutheran forum, and a liberal one. Each time someone has questions concerning the Lutheran faith (in the general forum), or just attending a Lutheran church....it becomes a debate on close/open communion...and questions also arise on if all of Scripture is inspired  ......these things would just be a 'given' if we had our own place in which we could just minister to folks.

The longer I'm here...the more I see it as nessasary. Am I wrong? Sorry, if I offended anyone here.

Definitely drink a lot of fluids. My husband had that last month, and ended up in emergency care, dehydrated, within a day. By the time he started to drink a lot of liquids, he couldn't keep anything down and it was too late. We had to call 911. It's amazing how delicate our fluid balance can be.

No truoble really, I'm just getting bored of school. (Well getting probably isn't the right word. I was never excited about it in the first place really.)

But it's OK, it's better than a public school.
I can't even imagine being 15. I didn't have a brain in my head yet. now I'm lucky. I got half a brain :)

I have a wee problem and could use a bit of advice. See my friend is a Nazerine and extremely legalistic. She keeps giving me these books asking me to read them. For instance, she gave me Living Beyond The Limits, a devotional by Franklin Graham, and wants me to go through it. Billy and his son, Franklin Graham are fine men. Still, I don't believe what they do. I keep telling her this. Paula gave me one today that had to do with living the sanctified life, or something like that. I can't quite remember the name. She also won't stand even the mildest of profanity, getting really adamantly offended. Now, before anyone starts jumping down my throat, Hell and Damn are the worst words in my public vocabulary. For instance, I jokingly told her that I was Damned to Eh, Oh, Hell. She was offended. Told me that I was 'grieving the Spirit with my unseemly speech.' Another time, she said that they (she and her fiance') might get stuck with a new home they were in the process of buying. I responded, again jokingly, "Oh damn! You'll just have to suffer with the nicest home on this side of the lake!" Again, she was offended.

I've been trying to get out of this house. It's bleeding me white and the driveway is destroying my cars. Yet, she constantly waxes poetic about how beautiful the setting is, the view, the privacy, etc ad nauseum. All of which is true. Still, the place is bleeding me and the driveway is terrible (long too)! Just today, she was saying, "are you sure God wants you to move from Lewiston? Look how beautiful this is. Why do you want to go to a place you've never been?" This less than ten minutes after holding on for dear life whilst going up my driveway and complaining how bad it is.

Paula trys to get me to go to church with her. She is getting more and more agressive with her prosthelyzing. How do I deal with this? The woman has pulled my chestnuts out of the fire and been more of a Christian sister to me than anyone else I've ever met. What she is doing is in sisterly love, still sometimes, it's suffocating.

She has worked her way into my heart and I have no wish to hurt her. She is kind, there when I need help, encourging, suffocatingly leagalistic, and drives me crazy. Any suggestions on how I can deal with this? All the Nazarenes and Pentecoastals and non-denoms, charismatics and AoG's are legalistic. They are like the OT Jews that had to live by the law. Dot every "I" and cross every "t". Tell her you don't live by the law and have God's grace and mercy through Jesus Christ. She probably won't understand but it might get through that you don't have to keep the letter of the law because you have to. You try to do what God wants you to do because you want to because He saved and loves you. Grace and mercy are there in case you screw up your life.

You're right Rad. She doesn't understand. She thinks I'm copping out. Yeah, I pointed out that the leagalism she was espousing is exactly what Paul refers to the Judeisers doing in the early church. She doesn't get it. I think the only solution to save any friendship is distance.

Paula's latest reading assignment (the one I couldn't remember earlier); The Pursuit of Holiness, by Jerry Bridges. I've only got so far as beginning the first chapter, but it sounds like a treatise on Piety.:sigh: Add to that it has her notes and highlighting all over the place. I hate reading books that are all marked up.:sigh:

"Can't have a Christmas tree because pagans of the old testament had trees in their houses."

Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

Mmm.. coffee... *Homer Simpson voice*

http://www.coffeelab.com/coffee/coffee_roaster.jpg

I had a very fun, productive weekend. Did errands with Gem, got to go to the library, got half my dining room carpet cleaned (cat keeps spraying the baseboards on that side *sigh*), finished all my laundry.... AND eased Gem further into neighbor social interactions.

We've been rather isolationist, and don't like her playing out in the front yard, so she knows a few neighbors, but not many. When we went for a walk on Saturday, we stopped by a house that had a little girl Gem's age playing outside. We've waved at her before but didn't know her. Before I knew it, the girls were playing in the backyard together. Her family is Hispanic, so there was a bit of a language barrier, but I was able to ask if Gem could stay here and play a while, and to point out where we lived (three houses down on the right). So she had some play time and made a new friend. Then after church on Sunday she wanted to ask another friend on the other side to come play, so I walked out with her and watched her cross the street and go to their door. Soon, we had Desiree over playing in our backyard with Gem. It was a first, on both counts (her playing at Daniella's and Desiree coming over to play). Before this we did "play dates" that were set up ahead of time.

Does anyonehere know anything about those bath tub re-fits, like Bathfitter or Re-bath or any of those, where they come in and basically put a bath tub shell over your existing tub and install new surround?

The tub here in the parsonage is absolutely gross and I can't get it clean. The church can't afford to re-do the bathroom here and neither can I. I was just wondering if those re-fits were expensive and even worth it.

That's great that she's making some neighborhood friends!! Don't forget to set healthy boundaries for these new friends as sometimes it can get out of hand with little girls banging on the door at all hours...or just walking in unannounced!

We didn't let our daughter play in the front yard until about 2nd or 3rd grade. I just never felt comfortable about it and we have a fenced in back yard with a swing set, so that was always the best place for playing anyway. Her best friend until Kindergarten was a boy next door her age, so that was VERY convenient!

I've never heard of anyone using any of them (edited to say locally, even though I've seen the ads for those things).

Our refinishing is costing $400.

But we had another company come in and tear out the old shower doors and tub surround and the tub surround has been replaced along with all the new plumbing parts and the new shower doors will go on once the tub has dried in a few days. But this company is outrageously expensive for their work...but I trust them and they are meticulous!

I have a friend who just painted her shower floor, that was in the same yucky shape. Just could not get it clean.

I was at her home a couple weeks ago, and it looks like a brand new shower!

I'll email her and find out what kind of paint she bought. I guess they have certain kinds for this type of thing.

The tub is a bit of an issue, but I have stuff to clean it. The real issue is the ceramic tile. The mildew has become imbedded in the caulking and grout and it won't come clean. It's disgusting! But I can't paint that. I would either have to replace it, which I don't want to do, or go over top of it with something.

One time my mother used Contact paper to go over a tub surround that had become cracked and modeled, and it lasted in that tub for years. I don't think that would work over tile, though. It would look tacky.

Real tile? Is the tile in good shape?

You can always remove the grout in between the tiles and regrout! I did that with my dad over at the house they bought last year and now the bathroom looks wonderful! It takes a while to do, but it's super easy!

Sorry Rev...it needs new grout! :) Maybe it's not too hard to do....ask at the hardware store.

Re-grouting and putting down new caulking isn't a bad job. The hardwear store should be able to give you a pamphlet on how to do it. Caulking is really easy. Just scrape it out with a box cutter and a putty knife and apply the new stuff.

Rev,

My friend emailed me back, and the paint they used for the shower cost about $20. They got it at Menards (don't know if you have that where you are). Anyway, she said the fumes were horrible, so you would need protective gear, and fans, and open the windows.

But it looks beautiful, and is holding up just fine. Perhaps you could paint over the tile with this stuff.....my sister in law did that in her kitchen, and it turned out fine.

Revrand, have the tile re-grouted. A good tile man should be able to do the job for a very reasonable price if you aren't willing to do so. There is no good reason to yank out a tiled tub surround if it isn't coming apart. Yes, the grout can get nasty when it isn't properly cared for. Have you or any of the previous tennants sealed this tile? Yes, it wants doing every few years. This is the secret to keeping the mould and mildew out of the grout. Is yours a porcelian tub? For far less than having the whole thing re-done the tub can be resurfaced and the tile re-grouted and sealed. Anyone who tells you the whole thing needs removing is trying to sell you something.

Check with your parisioners. There might be a tiler lurking about.;)

About playdates and children hanging on the bell all day...

My wife and I always had an 'open gate policy' when it came to our children's friends. Yes, it was rather a bit of a surprise to come into the living room and occasionally see a strange child watching the tele. But the kids had a lot of fun. We had a large place for the most part. I rather loved having the young people coming and going. It was a lot of fun.

We had a fenced front yard up till our last house. That one was only twenty feet from the sidewalk, and there wasn't much room for play space (what with the roses and herbacious plantings). So the children played in the back yard and what they called the back-back yard (the property was cross-fenced).

There is an epoxy type grout out now that doesn't have to be sealed - once it dries, it's waterproof, and still looks like regular grout. It's a little more expensive, but if you don't want to worry about messing with the sealing, it might be worth it. Also, you won't need as much for a shower enclosure than, say, an entire kitchen, so you won't need a whole lot of it (and it comes in smaller containers anyway).

The tub really isn't an issue. The tile grout and caulking is absolutely horrid. And if I waited for someone in the church to do it, I'd probably be at another church before they got to it anyway. If I suggested that I hire someone to do it the council would just say "Oh the trustees can do it." I'd be better off just paying for it myself and writing it off as a donation to the church.

When my husband was a trustee, he did make sure all that stuff got done at the parsonage. The pastors were always so appreciative. I just don't understand not taking care of church property...it does not make sense, and also...why is it your responsibility to pay for fixing things?...that is not right.

Very true.........we really tried that, but one can only take so much stress when going to church. When church is the most stressful place you attend during your week, it's time to move on, and just pray for them.
We prayerfully considered our move to the new church. The whole thing was very hard on my husband...it was easier for me when we left.

About 20 years ago I was serving a dual parish, and the one decided to move to LW from TLH. I had done it already in another church and knew that it would take appropriate planning and preparation for the congregation. I wrote in the newsletter every month about worship, liturgy, etc. We practiced many parts of the liturgy, the choir led our practices (right before services started).

Right at the beginning of the process, one couple asked to have me visit them. They were SO irrate about the new hymnal: "Why can't we stay with the truly Lutheran TLH! It is part of who we are!!" Any words I spoke fell on deaf ears. They gave me an ultimatum: "Either give up this 'non-Lutheran LW' or we will leave this church."

Well, of course, they weren't in Bible study, they hadn't attended any kind of Catechetical instruction in 50 years... Anyway, threats don't do too far, and they left.

A few months later I saw them in town and asked where they were attending worship. "Oh we found a very nice church home. Just what we were looking for - they don't have any worship wars. The Baptist church on the other side of town." :D

Good thing they found a solid Lutheran liturgical service!! ^_^

In Christ's love,

I have not been on here much the last couple of days. I did notice Rev's post about his bathroom. I have to say that we have been in the position he is in where it is much easier to fix something ourselves than to go through the hassle of not enough money, or someone will do it (ah, when?), or that it doesn't really need done. We did so much in our last parsonage. The thing that really got me was that the members were building new homes and then they left the parsonage go.

Yes, it does happen in our churches. There was much more going on there too. I know seajoy knows a bit about it as I had shared with her when she was going through a hard time at their former church.

Let's just say that I can not believe the pettiness sometimes. They fight and leave over things that have nothing to do with their salvation, although in the end it does.

Ok, I think I need a nice bottle of cold green tea.

We have a tutoring program that I help in. Someone has to be there to when one of the men tutor too. I woke up sick thursday morning and called the guy I was supposed to be there with, we were both supposed to have someone to tutor. He was easier to get a hold of and as sick as I was I didn't feel like trying to call the lady head of the tutoring because she is very hard to get a hold of and I didn't think I could. We were sitting there working on VBS yesterday morning and she told me not to call them again to get a hold of the other lady. Told me what was I thinking, did I think she was going to help? Said she had to much stuff to do to help. She asked one lady if she'd take over her SS class Sunday, the lady said no. I said I'd do it, she told me no, the kids were used to her. The other lady there asked if I'd take over for the summer for the education since she's moving. This other lady said no she'd do it. I didn't need to do it.
I didn't say much to her. I don't like fighting, I like peace. The only problem I've ever had with the church is when the pastor said he was leaving and the president thought he could do everything. Plus it being a fairly young church and most of them been there from the beginning and if your new its like you either fit in or you don't instead of everyone working together. They don't have much going in programs to get involved in. Womens groups, couples groups, bible study's, etc., big church you can avoid people better.

I need to put this on the calendar.

In the next 5 or so years, we plan to build a house in the country near where my husband grew up. I had always figured once we get out there, he would push for us to go to the Methodist church he grew up in since his whole family goes there. I had my issues about it but I was going to wait until we knew for sure where we would be building before I said anything. Why start an argument if we won't even end up out there, right?

Just yesterday, out of the blue, he suggested that when we move out there, we try the "Lutheran church in Union" or maybe the one further out on Lutheran Church Road - both LCMS. I asked him why, and he said it doesn't seem like we'd be a good fit at the Methodist church because it just didn't seem like it was growing and we would be looked upon more as financial contributors than valued members. However, he's always hearing of the different Lutheran churches doing more, and the people going there really seem to be getting something out of it. There are other UMC churches out there too, but he suggested looking at the LCMS churches first.

So, I then asked him if that was so important, why doesn't he seem to want to get involved more with our own church now, and he said he just doesn't feel right because of the types of committments they want out of you (which he has a point - volunteering to do sound, which would be his forte, would mean getting to church at 6:30 in the morning, and not leaving until after 12:00, just about every other Sunday and he already has to work every other Sunday).

So, I think he really is paying attention. He never ceases to amaze me. :D

Yes, he's been to my church a few times. He's my sister's children's godfather even :)

It's just that he won't leave the RC church...and I get tired of being a split family.
I got one that won't go to church though he's been with me a few times. Don't know how to get him there and don't want to pressure him..

As far as that post, good job everyone. I am not even brave enough to go there right now.

Can someone tell me how long this "decision" theoloy has been around? I know that in the Bible Jesus is asked what one must do to be born again, but that is not the same as this decision stuff, at least I think it is not.

Sorry Seajoy, just have to ask that quick question.

Quite a while. Luther had very little patience with it. In fact, this is one of the main reasons he didn't want to attend the Marburg conferrence. However, Melangthon convinced him to go. Both Zwinglii and the AnaBaptists adhered to this doctrine. In fact, Luther had so little patience with the AnaBaptists, if I remember right, he kept telling them to shut up. He didn't even want to hear from them and insisted on directing all of his dialog to Zwinglii. Course, it's been well over ten years since I read that book, so I may have my facts muddled. Still, I do remember clearly that this decision doctrine reportedly thoroughly annoyed Luther.

I'd love to be able to get away with those 'left behind' shorts. Unfortuneately, they'd deeply offend a very close friend. Ah, well. Musn't injure the conscience of the weaker bretheran...;)

I always have fun with it. I remember one post in the Charismatic forum where they were talking about a poll. Some percentage of people who self-identified as "born again" also did/believed something else (I don't remember the details).

Anyway, my comment was that I would need to look at how the poll asked the question, because the term "born again" can be political as well as biblical. And that there was a whole raft of Christians who consider themselves "born again" according to the Bible, who believe that their second birth came from God's grace through their baptism... when they were infants. Sometimes they self-identify as "born again" on polls like this (I do). Sometimes they don't.

WildStrawberry

Yep, been having joint troubles like you wouldn't believe. (or maybe YOU would considering. :D)

I was diagnosed with RA by a primary care doc about 10 years ago but the doc never did anything about it but give me Feldene which never helped. My new doc (that I've been seeing for about 10 years now...) never followed up on it. Then, at my last appointment, we were talking about how tired I've been lately (more so than the usual 'you just had chemo of course you're going to be tired' stuff) and how I ache EVERYWHERE. Joints, back, hips, feet, neck...you name it, it aches.

So, she said a rhum. would be able to diagnose fibro, chronic fatigue or RA.

It's just a matter of not having insurance or I'd have gone before now. *G*

To be honest, I'm not really into such things. That really is not the first thing I notice about a woman.

Let me guess... You're a "sense of humor" kind of guy right?

I really like how our characters look so thin. Hidden truth.

Have a great day all.

Yeah, even with the "plus sized" top and pants, my character looks more pregnant than fat. *laughs*

I've been reading the Four Day Win and working some of the exercises. It's been a real revelation for me in the area of weight loss. I mean, every diet tells you basically "eat less and move more", right? But this deals with more of the mental preparation -- the early stages of the theory of change (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation) before you get to the "action" phase that most diets start with. It's been eye-opening to see not so much what I should eat or not eat, but why I eat what I do (and as much as I do), and to work through exercises that help me identify that and change it.

I didn't ask if it was the first thing you've noticed.
