Peace, All

See subject line. Has such a thing been tried? How has it gone?

In my small community, there is one Christian Church and three Churches of Christ. Do you think it would be possible to have an occasional common worship service? (A capella, of course).

In Christ,

Daniel

In my area there are several Christian Churchs and CoCs. I believe that there has been some inter-worship...There was an area wide weekend-long worship thing every fall. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I enjoy going every year.

But what I have come to find out...there are usually more differences than just the worship music preference. There are even some Christian churches around here that don't use instruments. IM is usually the first difference you see, but when digging a little deeper, there are usually several that differentiate the two churches.

There has actually been an active movement to more "unite" the restoration churches. The minister of my Church of Christ, Rick Atchley, has been well at the forefront of this. Also, note that by "unite" we mean "work together" - there is no desire for anybody to change the name on their building or to change their style of worship.

Of course, as independent churches, there is no "central authority" to authorize such a union and no monolithic entities to unite. The attempt is merely an example that other churches can look to. These types of decisions must be made locally, with the approval of each local church.

If you'd like to hear what Rick has to say on this subject, you can listen to his "United Kingdom" series online. You can go here:

http://www.rhcc.us/audio.php

That particular series had nine parts, with the last part on page 9 in the archives. The first one in the series is on page 13. The series essentially documents the history of the RM, the history of the three major players, where we diverged and what our similarities/differences are. Rick is a pretty dynamic speaker, you won't be disappointed with his delivery, at least.

I certainly hope we can work together. We have so much in common, it's unfortunate that a few questionable theologies keep us from the great things we could be doing for God's kingdom together.

Greetings Daniel! This past year at the North American Christian Convention, some steps were taken to emphasize unity. Check out the website for info about this past year's convention held in Louisville, KY.

Thanks...I'd forgotten about that. Rick was one of the speakers at that event.

I saw it on DVD...very worth watching for anybody interested in this subject.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

I do hope and pray that we, as "Christians Only" can truly work together. I think the first step in working together is praying together.

In Christ,

Daniel

There's a merged Christian Church/Church of Christ near me, and I'm going to try it out soon, maybe next Sunday. Here's their website (http://www.nwchurch.net/index.html). I'd be interested in what people think of it.

Hehe - I know their preacher. I'm willing to bet that's a neat church.

That's encouraging! I went to a different one last Sunday, but I'll try for it this week. :)

Their preacher spoke at our church once, and he was great. I'd certainly visit if I was there...
