Has anyone else heard of this cult? they go to the funeral's of those who died serving in Iraq and picket and say stuff like God hates gay people. They are a huge shame to Christianity.

Yeah.
There aren't that many people I'd do particularly mean things to. But the WBC is definately in my top ten, right along side white supremacists, eco-terrorists, and... Hm... OK, top three.

There are some Baptist Churches that gives Baptist a bad name. All denominations will have at least one.

I think the only reason Phelps's ticket hasn't been pulled is that he is an expert in litigation. He would take the matter to a secular court and drag it out for years. It just isn't worth it. It's better to just let him expire. Whoever takes over probably won't be as gung-ho (hopefully) and maybe the cult will self destruct.

Phelps is a disbarred lawyer. He has talked about running for Governor in Kansas. He has 13 kids and all of them have law degrees and most are working with him.
Their church is a cult and I found a very informative online article on him/church/family written by Jon Michael Bell,a former reporter hired to investigate Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church.. If you would like a linky, please PM me. Because of some of the contents, it's not allowed to be linked in a post at CF.

I don't know a single fundamentalist who approves of the nutjobs at WBC. I would say that Fred Phelps is beyond labels.

I'm sorry, but they do not hold to any of the fundementals, therefor, they are not fundementalist at all.

They're not technical fundamentalists but they are colloquial hyper-fundamentalists because there've been enough vocal self-proclaimed fundamentalists adding in conservative western traditions into the fundamentals to change the common use of the word.

Anytime. After all, I am secretly one of you...minus the YEC and the word "fundamentalist." ;)

YEC?
I don't count myself as a fundamentalist, just a conservative, who holds to a literal interpretation of scriptures, salvation by faith, repentance of sins, ok, maybe I am a fundie, but not a kjv fundie.....

I believe in all of those things too. Except I don't believe in creationism (and somehow, I have no trouble reconciling this with literal interpretation of Scripture). The only reason I don't call myself a fundamentalist is because in modern times, that word has taken a meaning completely unrelated to the fundamentals of the faith that were lain at the beginning of the twentieth century. But really I share a lot in common with fundamentalists such as Project 86 and others on this forum. Like them I believe that the Bible is the inerrent word of God and the sole rule of faith, I believe in salvation by grace through faith, and I believe in the doctrine of vicarious atonement. Heck, many on the non-Christian forums call me a fundamentalist simply because I believe that all non-Christian religions are false.
