I know :D
But I still wasn't in the U.S.
Maybe I watch too much Simpsons.
If I remember on American movies, I notice, that I have watched a lot of them, so my imagine of the USA is very biased. ;)

Edit:
However, in my age-group in school I am one of the few people, who have a good view on the U.S.
The most have a negative one, especially because of the politics.

That is sad. :( Perhaps you could tell them of some nice Americans you have met. :)

America is not like Hollywood. I met some people from Europe while on vacation to Florida last year. They too said the USA is not well liked. They were surprised my husband and I were nice (their words). They thought all Americans were like TV. :sigh:

I told them to go back and tell people we are just regular folks. :)

I will do that, but I don't know if it works. They are connecting American international politics with the normal American too much.
Many in my age-group are very socialistic, so the "evil" captalistic America is a good enemy for them. They have many prejudices, but I think if they go to the U.S. they will see the truth. Fortunately we had American history in the Abitur, so many of them have wondered, what prefedices they had. Hmm, now I remember, I also have to learn that nest week.
If they ever go there, I anyway want to anytime in my life. :)

I hope I will see some flying police cars, which explode and many gunfights on the streets. Maybe I will go to area 51 to watch some aliens. :D

I also don't have one, but my family make a barbecue this evening, so it's not clever to eat something. There only will be trouble if I don't eat something. :D

*sits down with a cup of coffee* Ah, that's better. The kids will be coming in about two hours. The birthday cake is iced and ready, the balloons have been blown up, and the deck swept and prepped. The bubble machine has been checked (much to the general amusement of the cats), and the goody bags have been stuffed.

I need a drink. *laughs*

If nothing else, we have a fairly clean house now. There's just so much CLUTTER it's annoying most of the time. And with my hour-and-a-half commute to and from work, I just don't have the time to keep up with it like I'd like. Fortunately, Hunter is good at picking stuff up, so long as I give him some direction (without nagging -- it's a fine line).

It should be fun. This is Gem's first "real" birthday party. The previous ones have been mostly family and our friends, rather than kids her age. Now that she's in kindergarten and gymnastics, though, she knows more kids, so this is gonna be just five-seven year olds.

I have found that the exchange students think they are going to live in cities, party all the time, Americans are all fat and lazy. They get much of this from t.v. and American news.

When my daughter was in Germany 4 years ago, she had to change host families and Gymnasium. At her new one, they were trying to guess where she was from, they finally settled on Poland for some reason. They ruled out the USA because she was not fat.

She also had a hand in breaking down stereotypes while there. Such as Christians are not very tolerant, they found she can be very tolerant.

I won't smoke anything, either. My maternal grandfather used to smoke, but he quit a long time ago - still has the cough at times My maternal grandmother died of lung cancer and she smoked My uncle (my mom's sister) had paranoid schizophrenia and he constantly smoked and died of arteriosclerosis. My paternal grandfather smoked, but he quit once he heard cigarettes were bad for health, so that was a long time ago. He died just due to normal complications of aging.

I smoked cigars for a time, in college. But at the time I was fairly serious about my music, and they started messing with my voice, so I stopped. Never tried a cigarette. My dad smoked them most of his life and is now using oxygen due to emphysema.

The birthday party went well. The weather held long enough for the kids to play outside on the new playset, and decorate it with sidewalk chalk and washable paint before the rain came in. One of the moms and one of the dads stayed for the party, and it was very nice to sit and visit with them.

I'm glad to hear your party went well, Synger. Aren't you exhausted?

I still occasionally smoke clove cigarettes, but one is all I can handle. It's all but impossible to get the filter free ones from Turkey any more and others are mixed with tobacco making them far from enjoyable. When my current tin runs out, I'll be out of luck.

Yep, cigars/cigarettes/smoking, to me=gross. Plus, *can't breath* with that smoke around. . .

Louisiana now has a clean air (smoke free) act for all restaurants (and maybe stores - I know that if it serves food, then no smoking) which is pretty good for the people. . .that way if people can't be or don't want to be around the smokers, they don't have to be. . .of course, people can still smoke in bars (if they are serving more alcohol than food). Makes going bowling for me so much more pleasant!

Mel, that is really cool. We don't have photoshop. I've not learned how to use all of it, but I know TheGimp is a good program that's free for a lot of photo editing and making graphics.

I cannot believe it.
It's april and about 28 C in Northern Germany.
My Grandpa says it is the hottest April he ever undergoed. He says one day in april in the Second World War, had been so hot, but he really didn't remember it anymore. In that time he had other problems like the weather.
The radio stations say the hottest day in april which had ever been measured in Germany.

I think that global warming thing had just begun for 5 years. :sigh:

Now I know where all of our warmth went, to Germany! My daughter is in the southern part and right now (5 in the afternoon) it is 75F (24C) Let's see 28 C is about 82 F. That is warm for this time of year.

Here it is 55 and is to get to 70. We seem to go from cold to hot back to cold, then hot. Temp can't seem to stabilize any.

As to the sun, can't be in it. It's not so much a sunburn (though I do burn after awhile - I know from playing in a swimming pool for two hours!), it's immediate heat stroke! :swoon:

Hahahaha. . . .well, I've been a mod for something like two years now, and you've not yet gotten rid of me! :P

GT gives me headaches, though. I once posted my trinity study there, somebody said it just couldn't be, and the mods there did nothing about what they said while I got all kinds of reports for some song lyrics. . .yeah, lyrics are obviously more important that upholding the doctrine of the trinity!

Good Morning!

I'm pretty tolerant to the sun myself. (Living in Florida, you kind of have to be...) My shoulders tend to burn more easily though, and I was outside most of the afternoon at an air show, wearing a tank top...
I think, if I had done that, I would need a new skin. ;)

What's a Lutheran beverage?

It's a code name used at the seminary for beer. Only those functions that the seminary "officially" allowed the consumption of alcohol could be promoted using the word "beer." For other such times, such as informal gatherings with professors (except for the Profs-n-Stein on Fridays) we would refer to it as "Lutheran beverage."
The common saying was BYOLB, which means "Bring Your Own Lutheran Beverage."

At the Fort, we don't have coded language. We call a beverage a beer. Our Friday afternoon social event is called "Gemutlichtkeit" which in German means coziness or comfortableness, social event.

Today, I cleaned the living room - if you guessed very few things were mine, you're very correct.

I did what I was told and just took things out and put them out in a box on the lawn (actually, my dad just told me to throw the stuff out on the lawn, so I was much nicer then he said to be!)

Then when my mom came home (unfortunately, my sister stayed home today when I needed her out of the way), they had to take care of all their junk - and the living room STILL looks like a pigsty.

Ugh.

At least I've been getting to do some exercises - trying to lose some weight. . .should be somewhere between 100 and 127, and I'm at 129.

Hunter's been back at school evenings, so last night I stayed up to say hi to him. I was tired, but wanted at least a good-night kiss before going to bed. So of course, we sat down and watched TV together for an hour, and THEN he wanted to talk about politics and news... finally I got to bed a little after midnight.

This morning, I hit the snooze too many times, and Gem actually got up when I did (I get up really early -- long commute).. and she's lost her first tooth! So excitement and congratulations and hugs were happily distributed.

Then when I finally got into work (very late), my team leader is out sick, and two of my webmasters won't be in this afternoon, so I'm cancelling our webmaster meeting. I'm sitting here trying to determine what in the mound-o-work on my desk to tackle first.

I did some deep cleaning this past week and laundry looms, but I wanted to mow today. I went outside a few minutes ago to get started and it's drizzling! We need the rain, but it wasn't supposed to even be a possibility until tonight. :sigh:
I guess I'll stay in and read. :D

Well my wife's first two Regency Romance novels will be published as eBooks in the next month or so. She has also written a more contemporary romance she is trying to sell off to a different publisher and she just signed with an agent to help her sell her work.

Maybe you will be reading her books soon if you like Romance novels that is.

When I was laid up with my shoulder this past winter, I read a couple of these. I hadn't in a long time. They were Christian ones, so that was nice.

I'd love to read one of your wife's novels. That would be cool!

Shiny happy people laughing
Meet me in the crowd
People people
Throw your love around
Love me love me
Take it into town
Happy happy
Put it in the ground
Where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Everyone around love them, love them
Put it in your hands
Take it take it
There's no time to cry
Happy happy
Put it in your heart
Where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

It's so sweet
It will rot people's teeth.

Makes sugar mild
gums will fall out of your child.

Like honey in cake
it will make your fillings ache.

Diabetes is the reason
'cause that tune is in season.

I've always taken that song for sarcasm. But, I wouldn't be surprised either. Disappointed, but not surprised.

By God's good grace, we haven't heard the old Police song "I'll Be Watching You" at a wedding for a while.

And no, it wasn't a Lutheran wedding.

Can't get back to sleep. Gem has been complaining of a sore throat today, and was running a bit of a fever. About 3ish, she woke up again. Sounds like her chest is congested. Called Kaiser, and after talking to the advice nurse decided we didn't have to take her in to night-time urgent care, since she's breathing fairly evenly, even if she's wheezing some. We'll take her in this morning. She and Hunter are sleeping on the couch. I can't get back to sleep yet. Mind whirling about calling the church to let them know we won't be able to teach our Sunday School class (they can wait to learn about Pentecostals and Word of Faith until next week), and the possibility of having to cancel our friend's birthday party (they don't have a home to host it in, so we're hosting it for them).

So I'm here, trying to wind down, humming Come Thou Font of Every Blessing over and over again. If you have to have a song virus, that's a good one to have, right?

It has its quirks...it was struck by lightning last August, which completely fried the console. Everything had to be replaced and rewired, and while they were at it, they upgraded the memory system. As a result, there's still some kinks to be ironed out, like the faulty Crescendo (which, for some reason, immediately turns on the Zimbelstern. Nor does it save any changes made to it manually)....

At least it's fully functional again. :D It was down for an entire semester.

Allen and Rogers are the digital miracles of the 20th Century. I've played and heard them in churches and auditoriums for the last 40 years and they are fantastic. I've given organ lessons on both also in homes. They are expensive. They last Allen I heard was at a dedication in a Lutheran church in Herman Mo. Blew our socks off.......wow !

If nobody knows they sound just like a theater or church organ.

Melethiel
22nd April 2007, 05:39 PM

There's a large difference between the older and newer Allens and Rogers. I sold organs back in the 60's and early 70's and now, on occasion I will help congregations find the right one for their circumstance. I Try to stay away from the commercial brands because they have to many bells and whistles even though they don't sound too bad.

It's never too late to learn how to play an instrument or to learn to read music. You just need to want to do it. 3 years ago I took flute lessons (for 6 months) and I now play at church and in a flute choir. I don't know what level I'm at, but I'm no longer a beginner. Hard work pays off and you don't need to be a kid to do it!

I took piano lessons for five years (including a year with a guy who played piano/organ on the Love Boat... I kid you not!), but was only able to master chop sticks. I was too young I guess to take it seriously. I also took clarinet lessons in grade school (Benny Goodman is my hero!). I played the bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet in high school, but haven't touched them since.

The one good thing I learned from all of that is that I can plunk out a hymn tune from the hymnal if I'm unfamiliar with the tune. That ability comes in handy quite often.
