Do your pastor prevent you from listening to non-Gospel songs?

How can a pastor (or anyone else for that matter) prevent us from doing anything? I realize some churches have rules such as no dancing, no secular music, no movies (don't even get me started on how foolish that is). But even so - members aren't obligated to follow the man made rules, only those rules set down in Scripture.

I am a sentimentalist. I like most forms of music (not noise) I like Christians songs that I see as incorrect theologically, but not so far out to be abhorrent, because I like the form and the unique style of a given form performed by talented artist. If the message is not anti God I can accept it.
In Church the purpose is worship and praise to God so any song that honors God is in the realm of Accepted

:confused:No, but my pastor encourages me - as do the scriptures - to be careful about what I listen to.

Why do you ask?

I am an exclusive psalmist but I will listen to other Christian music but none of the modern trash.

No, I would have to say our pastor does not stop us from listening to certain types of music, but as for me I listen to a range of stuff from hymns to some of the newer praise music I even listen to nature tracks where you get the bird chirping and the whole deal(but my family thinks I am weird for that). I dont listen to noisy stuff because that just gives me a headache. If I am going to listen to something I want to be able to hear myself think while I am, and I want to be able to understand what they are saying. I think you could figure out which music I wouldn't listen to. Also if the music doesn't glorify God then I usually dont listen to it. I am very particular about the words the music sets forth because I dont want to regret hearing something that is going to cause me to think in ways I would not like to. I want to glorify God in all I do and that includes what I listen to!

I don't think the pastor should 'prevent' you from listening to a particular kind of music. I will say though .. Music really can have an influence on your emotions. I personally try to listen to mainly(if not all) Christian music. It's really made my relationship with God stronger.
Christian music is such a beautiful thing. :)
God Bless.

No. Our pastor (and he will be the first one to tell you so) doesn't have the authority to "prevent" anyone from doing anything, although he does strongly encourage us to use discernment and Godly wisdom in the things that we listen to.
My pastor knows that I play with a band that plays non-Christian music and he and his wife will even come out to hear us play on occasion. He also knows that I have a radio show through live365.com and he's pretty cool with that. I play no Christian music on my show.
Now, this is where it gets a little strange.
At the same time, I'm a part of the leadership at my church and I helped to found the church, as well as write up it's constitution, by-laws, and statement of faith.
One of the things that we decided, as a body, is that there will be no rock music in our church and we define that broadly enough to include a lot of non-rock contemporary and even CCM.
While we believe that it's OK for recreational listening, assuming, obviously, that it doesn't glorify or encourage those things that don't honor God, we don't believe that it's appropriate for the reverent atmosphere and attitudes that the Bible tells us corporate worship is supposed to have.
Really, it isn't that the music itself is bad, but that we've just seen it lead to too many abuses and wanted to avoid those things.
I know that seems like quite a contradiction, so feel free to ask any questions about that.

My pastor leaves it up to us with music. He does encourage Christuan. But leaves it open,
