Music is not sinful in and of itself. It can be used for good purposes and it can be used for bad purposes.

Is music bad?
No, God made music, so I don't think it is bad in itself. It can be used for selfish reasons and to exalt self and that isn't good though.

As others have said, Music in of itself is not bad. There are hymns, worship/praise music, gospel and Contemporary Christian Music that are all created and sung with the idea of worshipping the Lord. I believe that some secular music should be avoided due to their lyrics, though.

Is music bad? No it is not. Though it depends on what the music is being used as a tool for. But personally I find that there is a lot of good secular music out there, that sounds a whole lot better than Christian music IMO. :)

Music is not bad! Absolutely not.

Second to excercise, and fresh air, music.........to suit your taste..........lifts the human spirit.

For me music brings joy. I speak of Christian music. Finding the time to listen is another matter. But when I do, I am so blessed.

Music in itself isn't bad. People make it that way based on the type of message they're trying to send with their music.

After Jesus had shared the bread and wine of the new covenant, He and the disciples sang a hymn. (Matthew 26:30)

Remember David? He was a musician. You may remember 1 Samuel 16:23 when David played a harp for Saul and cast out an evil spirit. The entire book of psalms is also musical.

Is music bad?

Since we all seem to be unified that music is not bad and that seems to answer your question, I am curious as to what prompted the question in the first place?

As always,

I think music was originally created to worship God, and is so edifying when used in the proper way. But I have testimony of certain music being very destructive in my life, bringing me into depression, and influencing wrong things in my life.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

...define bad?

Is it sinful? No.

I myself listen to alot of Industrial EBM, the majority of the genre is mainly themed on despair and violence, but that doesn't taint the whole genre. It really just depends.

Is music bad?

What would make you think that music is bad?

There are numerous references of "sing unto the Lord"... we are told to make a joyful noise...a lot of the Psalms could be considered "tunes"

Get a concordance and look for sing, song, etc and see how much it's referenced.

Aye, and wasn't it David that danced before the Lord?

Probably an Islam thing. I've heard that Islam is an extremely legalistic religion.

Music is not bad; however, I wonder if you really meant to ask another question?

Did you mean to ask whether instrumental music in worship is "bad"?

Otherwise, you have peaked my curiosity (as you have with oldchurchguy). Why did ask?

That's a rather broad generalization. Music is in no way "bad" in and of itself...it's how some people choose to use music, what kind of music some people create and listen to that can be a "bad" influence.

Music in general is a blessing from God, and also a great way of praising Him. Many of the Psalms speak of praising the Lord with song and instruments.

That's kind of like asking if books are bad, isn't it?

music isnt allowed in saudi arabia and im not sure why.

The above statement got me curious so I did some internet researching and learned the following:

The Saudi government does have a group of civil servants who are constantly monitoring and screening various internet websites including some music sites. But, according to some of the links below, even pop music is allowed but possibly with some modification to the jacket cover (dressing more modestly for a female singer, for example).

What the Saudi government is doing on a national level appears to be similar to parents in the U.S. buying or subscribing to internet filters on an individual level.

Not music that is wholesome and up lifting!
Certainly some of the music on the market is, as the artists take Gods name in vain, swear, and tear down the Christian faith our God and our values.
However singing and music is mentioned in the Bible as a form of worship.

Music is hypnotic, and can put one in another realm. It can be escapism, which can be nice, sometimes.

It depends how you define good. I like Beethoven, as well as Megadeth.
