"In a permissive society the rights of the individual are considered to be above those of society as a whole. The person’s private conduct is said to be almost sacrosanct. He or she is permitted to do even the most despicable things without accountability to others. All sorts of legal mechanisms are put in place to protect the so-called civil liberties of the individual, even though his or her conduct be most unethical or even immoral and destructive to others."

Such is the pride of our society.
I'll have to look into this book.

Is Keller advocating a non-permissive society where the rights of the society are above those of the individual? If so, how are the rights of society determined?
Does Keller give any example(s) of an individual doing a despicable act with no accountability to anyone? Does Keller give any example(s) of an individual's civil liberties being unethical, immoral, or destructive to others?

I agree . An obvious point is the pulpits allowing spousal and child abuse in their midst . Those that have the money are permitted to do whatever they want . Children don't count until they get jobs and able to "tithe" . Stay at home spouses don't provide the money , either .

Why should we be shocked about wolves in Sheep's clothing? Our Bible has forewarned us that this would be the case.
Paul even notes this in Acts upon leaving:
Act 20:29 (http://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/Act/Act020.html#29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
The entire NT warns us to beware & not to be decieved. What I think the bigger issue actually is, IS LACK OF DISCERNMENT in gullible Christians!
And I include their overall ignorance to DOCTRINAL TRUTHS. They don't study the Word of God for themselves, so when teachers/pastors preach false doctrines, they can't spot it.
Granted, we cannot KNOW every single wolf becuz they do act just like sheep - we can't spot everyone, but MANY do show darkness, and we IGNORE IT & pass it off, saying "do not judge others"...etc.
In another thread, people were supporting a Pastor that wouldn't even say "Jesus is the ONLY way to God" (salvation)...
They found OTHER reasons why he was so wonderful... :swoon: HELLO? If my pastor did that, I'd of left the church immediately.
PEOPLE are as much to blame in their lack of discernment and SUPPORT to these bad seeds.

Um, I have a little story for you - the church we just left got personally involved this past year w/ a woman in the church who told the Pastor that she was being abused by her husband & needed shelter. (we know this becuz we personally know a staff member)
They put her up at the church's 'missionary house' (a house for visiting missionaries/guest speakers etc) and got her an attorney... and were involved w/ the police to help her.
THEY FOUND OUT SHE WAS LYING. The husband is ready to SUE our church for enabling her in their court battle for custody of the kids.
That SHE has mental issues. The husband was actually harmed by the church's direct involvement to help her!
SO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU JUDGE HERE. The church cannot do all you think it can to help people when they only go on 1 person's word (their 1/2 of the story)!!!!

Are you talking about in the church or in the world? Some here think you are talking about in the church?

I agree with the quote - seems to relate very well with what I see in the world, but I was wondering how this quote related to the title of the book.

"don´t judge me !"
oh, boy how often did i have to discuss that out... these people want to continue in the flesh while wearing the jesus-ribbon. it took me so many years of riddeling, tears and suspicion to finally figure out what is actually taking place. the temple is overthrown, the abomination is set up.
in the beginning it was always tearing me apart because i did not want to hurt people´s feelings. today i am so blessed that i know a lot better where i stand, where christ stands, and where they stand.
the problem is that they in every church, and that you have to be so careful with what you say. i believe we can´t give up on them yet, they might need some more time...
as to women and lieing, yes, a lot of them are into it. men are into physical agression, women use deceit. in such a society where "cleverness" is being rewarded...
a lot of women choose to continue to bear their relationships, but later take revenge and go to court and take the money and the kids with them....i been in jail and i talked to a lot of men there, so i know what i am talking about.
