I didn't mean to limit it to LCMS or ELCA it's to be an exact match for the two subforums. I just used the first group and the dots to indicate continuation because I didn't think the whole name with the posting or not posting would fit in the allocated space.
So LCMS.... equals LCMS, WELS, ELS etc
If you feel you belong in either of the two subforums then answer in teh affirmative for them.
Thanks,
Marv

I post at sub-forums rather rarely.
And I do not see myself fitting in either one.
I post mainly here.

I spend time looking at posts here but haven't posted a lot. I am ELCA, and tend to think of myself as a moderate/conservative in the style of NT Wright, who would be considered a "liberal" in the LCMS/WELS but is generally regarded as conservative as far as the mainline denominations go.
I'm not planning on returning to the ELCA subforums anytime soon. Porterross knows what I am talking about (and thanks again for the gracious invitation to start spending more time in the main forum!).

How is he/she conservative in the ELCA but liberal by LCMS standards?
Please clarify.

I don't think it's quite accurate to say that the LCMS would call N.T. Wright a "liberal"...at least not across the board. My understanding, in fact, is that some of the Profs at Ft. Wayne rather appreciate him (but that's a rumor, I have no evidence to support that).
He is an Anglican, and takes an Anglican position on things such as women's ordination. But his biblical scholarship is, in fact, remarkably conservative. His work against groups such as the Jesus Seminar is exemplary (better than anything Missouri has done!). His defense of the historicity of NT canon blows people like Bart Ehrman out of the water.
On the other hand, there have been some specifically Lutheran critiques of his views of the Law (see here (http://www.amazon.com/Paul-Law-Covenant-Andrew-Das/dp/1565634632/sr=8-3/qid=1171555487/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-7357429-1882463?ie=UTF8&s=books) and here (http://www.amazon.com/Perspectives-Old-New-Paul-Lutheran/dp/0802848095/ref=pd_sim_b_5/002-7357429-1882463)).
As for me and this poll, I post anywhere and everywhere. Not sure how to vote.

Well Robert, that would depend on whether or not you are Lutheran. If you aren't, then you really don't belong in either subforum. So you could either not answer at all, which if you are not Lutheran would be my preference or you could go for neither.
The poll is an attempt to get a handle on the mix of Lutherans here since there was some discussion that a couple of people felt they were in a minority position. Just trying to find an answer to the question. So if you aren't Lutheran, it's really not a poll for you.

Just some thoughts....
1. I understand that only a tiny percentage of the active Lutheran posters at CF ever post in this forum.
2. CF is an international website, actually based in Australia. ALL American Lutherans combined make up about 12% of the world's Lutherans.
3. CF doesn't track which SUBgroup Lutherans belong to, but if the 12% of Lutherans that live in the USA fit the stats for the nation's Lutherans, then the ECLA members would be nearly twice as numerous as the LCMS/WELS/ELS combined. There's no way to know if that's the breakdown here at CF, however.
Just things I'm pondering.

Robert basically explained what I was getting at.
Bishop Wright would be "conservative" in the ELCA because he has strongly chastised the American Episcopal Church for its actions with regard to Bishop Robinson and the issue of homosexuality in general. He is strong in his defense of things such as the bodily resurrection and the virgin birth, as well.
He would be "liberal" in terms of LCMS/WELS because of his views on women's ordination.
In terms of Josiah's point, I think that the better breakdown of Lutherans, which would also give us a more global perspective, would be to not make the distinction between ELCA/ELCIC and LCMS/WELS, but Lutheran World Federation (ELCA, ELCIC, the state churches of Scandanavia, etc.) and non-LWF churches.

But I will ask again... how many of them are regular posters in this forum? I don't see that many Confessionals who post here. I know of a few who voted and do not post here regularly.. if at all.
There's a difference between "regularly" and "once in a blue moon."

Patience, oh learned one. This exercise and our self-examination of late has been enlightening and hopefully inviting to some who have been cautious about TCL.
Do we not wish to encourage and therefore increase the number of Lutheran posters? We're making progress, methinks.
I see this as very clarifying on several matters and you know I stayed away for several reasons which have been either discussed openly or alluded to and we've seen posts by some other former regular members who have also stayed away for some of the same reasons. That is most encouraging and I hope it continues as I have faith that it will.

This forum is based in Australia? Really, that surprises me. I mean, I'd been told the smilies to the right were designed by an Aussie, but the rest didn't register, I suppose.
Oh my! (LOL) That reminds me of a line in the movie Finding Nemo, " Yeah, probably Americans. They think they own ev...erything."
There is such intense debate going on in the fractured American church that I think it may intimidate or annoy the European or other Lutherans. Then again, there's the language barrier. Also, there isn't a sub-forum for any other of the Lutheran branches except the Americans. Maybe if these folks had their own forums, they might come out into our common-room more often. I'd suggest the armour of God first, though.(LOL);) :D

I was talking with another staff member about this earlier. If you notice in my signature is some art work created by a friend of mine and one of our members. The idea is to attract attention to Lutherans who may not even know we have a forum. You are welcome to copy it and use it in your signature as it was made for that purpose. Kind of an advertizement and welcome matt. :)

You know, I'm one of those "once in a blue moon" posters...I've just come back after a lengthy hiatus and then the forum explodes. :)
I'm rather cautious about posting here and have been since I found the forum in '05-'06 (I can't remember exactly when I registered) mainly because, when I first started posting, things had exploded...and I backed waaaay off. (I have this thing about wanting to be liked :D) I like to lurk and learn and I feel like I WANT to post...but I'm afraid of being smacked down. I am LCMS and am most comfortable being either here in the main forum or in the conservative forum.
That being said I think, as a newbie, I like the general basic forum where everyone can come together and talk about the differences in the synods. It may not get much done, but it sure has opened my eyes to what is going on in our Lutheran churches.
I also like that I can go to the conservative forum and not be afraid that someone is going to come in and accuse me of being "hateful" or whatnot when I have an opinion that I'd like to express just because they don't happen to agree with what I'm saying. Which is what I've been seeing quite a bit of lately...on both sides of the "fence".
Respectfully, I will abstain from voting since I am one of those once in a blue moon posters. However, as a very active "lurker", I'd be sad if the forum were split and ideas and debates would no longer be able to take place. I think that we, as adults...as CHRISTIAN adults, should be able to debate without smacking the other person, without having to fear that we'll be reported because of differing views rather than violations of the actual forum rules.
Now that I've bored you all...:D...I return you to your regularly scheduled thread. ;)

I am a Lutheran of the Continental Confessional variety (think Hermann Sasse). I am most comfortable with the ELCE (Evangelical Lutheran Church of England) or the SELK (Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church [of Germany] ).

I'm an occasional lurker and have posted here on the Lutheran subforum only a couple of times before this. An active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, I come from a long, long line of Evangelical Lutherans, who at some point were told that they were Catholics no longer but should now consider themselves Lutherans. The Catholic side altars were taken down and Luther's Catechisms were passed around, and Lutheran Christians my ancestors have been ever since.
From this POV, I find the bickering between the different USAian Lutheran acronyms as alien and tiresome as the endless bi-partisan Dem/Rep tug-of-war, and this is what keeps me from participating more often in this forum. Quite a few of the threads here seem to turn into an ugly one-upmanship about which sinner/acronym is better qualified to judge other sinners/acronyms--when the fact of the matter is that by faith alone and none of us can pass that judgement.
Now, I'm always game for a good, even heated debate. Still, I would welcome more discussion on what unites the Christians and us Lutherans instead of those that drive wedged between the body of Christ.

The ELCE is most closely affiliated the LCMS from what I understand, at least the links from their website all point there. I'll be attending at least one ELCE church in England in late April or early May and I'm really looking forward to it.

My intended lives in Hants right now, but there is no pastor at the nearsest church in Fareham.
His permanent home in Herts flooded this week (water leak...I have always felt uneasy about those attic tanks Queen Vic insisted on!) and will need extensive renovation, so I imgine we will be making use of the 2 weeks I'm there to address that, which means we'll be visiting the church in Harlow, Redeemer Lutheran Church.
