Wow this has got to be the fastest I have seen a "fellowship" thread fill up. When I came on board 3 years ago we had the Liberated Lutherans League. That thread got up to 5000 posts and then Erwin decided that no thread should go over 1000 posts because of server space. Since then we have had 4 different fellowship threads, but this one is going to fill up before the month is over.

Yep she said it as her high. You never know what's going to come out of kids mouths.
A pastor at an LCMS church, where I used to belong, asked one little tot during the children's sermon, "where do people go when they die if they don't believe in Jesus?" The little feller stated the name of the next town down the road! :)

Silly question time... is there a specific reason we don't just let the fellowship thread roll over with the same name? I've been in other forums here on CF and the fellowsship thread is the same name, with a different number. Like Adiaphora Alehaus (2) and then Adiaphora Alehaus (3). That would allow for some consistency from thread to thread, and folks would know that this IS the fellowship thread.

That and we can say that Lutherans like variety.

I suggest for the next one that the name be "Gemutlichtkeit" which is German means "coziness"

It is what we call our fellowship time here each Friday in the Student Commons. We connect a couple of kegs of beer and each person contributes $2 or $3 and can drink as much as they want. Most of our conversations are about theology or church related and a few are about the weather or sports. But it is always a good time.

BTW This time is usually shared by the Professors and Students alike. We all are one big happy family.

It is. Taking someone on a "snipe" hunt is a trick played on them, trying to get them to hunt something that is not so "real." Although there is a bird called a snipe, but they're not hunted.

What is snipe hunting????

From Wikipedia

A snipe hunt, also known as a fool's errand or wild goose chase, is one of a class of practical jokes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practical_joke) that involves experienced people making fun of newcomers by giving them an impossible or imaginary task.
For example, inexperienced campers are told about a bird or animal called the snipe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe) as well as a usually ridiculous method of catching it, such as running around the woods carrying a bag or making strange noises. Real snipes (which are often mistakenly thought to be non-existent) are difficult to catch for experienced hunters, so much so that the word "sniper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniper)" is derived from it to refer to anyone skilled enough to shoot one. The hunt never succeeds for novices. In another, more cruel version, the unsuspecting "snipe hunter" is secretly abandoned to see how long will it take for him to notice this and start to panic.
Snipe hunts are similar to hazing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazing) except that the abuse is embarrassment from trickery rather than physical humiliation.
The name comes from a family of shorebirds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorebird) named snipe that are notoriously difficult to shoot. However, the term "snipe hunt" does not describe a hunt for actual prey. Often, the pranksters will tell the victim, "we need to spread out," and then go home.

Here is a Snipe also called a tomber doodle. If you have ever seen one walk you would understand why the name. Its actually a fun camp site game. I've never seen it used a mean prank.

man...y'all blew the suprise!...

Snipe hunting is you take someone in the middle of the wood, in the middle of the night. You tell them to hold a bag between thier legs and make some wierd noise (whatever weird noise you can think of will suffice) and leave them there for awhile...you tell them the snipe will run into the bag, but they have to catch them...now...we would stay close and keep an eye on them so nothing happened to them (and to make scary noises and REALLY freak them out)...but we only would do it for maybe 30 minutes or so...I know people that were dropped in the middle of the woods and left until morning...we wern't that mean...

We did something similar when I was in Boy Scouts. We would take the unsuspecting victim out into the woods and tell them to stand there with the bag while we went through and scared them out of the bushes. If it worked well it was the victim that we scared out of the bushes. To see their face when they found out there was no such thing as a snipe they were mad and wanted to get someone else so that they wouldn't be the only fool who fell for it.

Reminds me of the pastor who was going to preach a sermon on lying. The Sunday before he announced his message for the next week. He said, "for next Sunday I want everyone to read the 17th chapter of Mark."
Next Sunday in the pulpit he asked, "Raise your hands if you finished reading the 17th chapter of Mark." A number of people raised their hands. Then he said, "Very good. But there are only 16 chapters in Mark. Now for my sermon on lying..." ^_^

Have already done the clocks. I am hoping my cell phone provider has done what they need to change the clock there. I suppose one could go to the website of their provider and see if anything is on there about it.

Don't most cell phones change automatically, even without a call being amde or received? Mine does. It did last night. It also automatically changes when I'm travelling between time zones. The phone receives signals from the towers even when it's not in use.

No problem here. I had to do liturgy this morning for the Divine Service. Being from Minnesota I am used to the time change thing twice a year, but these people in Indiana think it's the end of the world to change your clock ahead.

Uhh....Northwest Indiana has always changed. We're the oddballs of the state. So, it's not a problem to us, except that it's a little earlier than usual ;)

the cell phone will change on it's own when you make your first phone call (or one comes in)...I'm at work...so all of the clocks here will change on thier own...lucky my...at least i don't have to worry about mom grandfather clock anymore...setting it up...no problem...setting it back...major problem...the movement wouldn't go back wards so you had to ste it forward 11 hours...stopping to let it chime every half hour...sometimes I think hurricane Rita did me a lot of favors...
See, my cell phone changes - however, it's only about four hours later than I need it to change. A few years ago it would change just fine sometime at night or early morning. Now, it doesn't change until around 11 or noon the day of - so not fun!

My daughter got hurt at gymnastics yesterday :(

She was doing a roundoff backhandspring and hurt her left wrist (she's left-handed). I rushed her to the ER (she didn't want to go) and they took x-rays and did not find any fractures but are worried that she might have injured a growth plate in her wrist. So, this afternoon we have an appointment with the orthopaedic doctor to find out if she needs a cast or not, right now the ER put on a splint (half cast). She's very upset...gymnastics is her life!

So sorry to hear about this. Sometimes God tests us, even in our young years.

This is a great opportunity to take her and go before the Lord in prayer. My son had a very bad siezure when he was 7. It came out of the blue, no fever...or anything, right there in front of me. In the ER, the doctor talked of possible tumors etc...and other scary stuff. After the doctor left, my son and I spent some time in prayer about this...and he and I both calmed down.

He spent 3 days in the hospital with every test under the sun. All the tests were negative, and he has never had a seizure since. He is 22 now. I think this was God's way of strengthening my little son's faith, as well as mine.

God Bless you and your young one!

Well, we just got back from the doctor's office and it turns out that my daughter has a severe sprain. Of course, that still means a long time of healing, but I was so worried that the growth plates were injured...and that could mean a lot worse complications! So, we'll stick with the sprain and she'll wear her splint and refrain from any activity except homework (yeah, she still has to do it even though she's left-handed and that's the wrist she hurt!).

Sorry to hear that she hurt her wrist. Sounds a little like what happened to me when I was in school. I fell on mine too. They thought it was just a sprain but I found out 10 years later that not only had I broke my right wrist but I broke the left one as well. I'm sure the X-rays are much better today. Do tell her to treat it with care though, sprains need special treatment so they can heal right. :)

OK as if I hadn't had a rough couple days...now today I took my dog for a walk when we got home from the doctor's with my daughter's sprained wrist and the neighbors' dog attacked my dog :(

At least they offered to pay for the vet and even walked with me to the vet's office up the street. I just hope they keep the dog chained up from now on. My poor doggie got 3 staple stitches at her neck and one on her rump.

I think I'm going to hide my family in the house for a while. No one can go anywhere or do anything. It's just too dangerous of a world! :(

When my oldest son was in high school he played baseball. He was the catcher. The one pitcher they had was left handed and his pitches would tail at the end which caused the catcher to turn his hand with the thumb down to catch. On one fast ball pitch the ball hit his thumb and sprained it. We took him to the emergency room while another player took over as catcher. Ten minutes after we arrived at the emergency room the player who replaced him at catcher walked in... with the exact same injury!

We eventually decided that the catchers glove was defective.

Wouldn't it be more intimidating to say "Beware the March of Ides" but then you would have to define what Ides are and they mean the middle of the month.
Basically, the ides is the fifteenth of a month.

A day in the Roman calendar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_calendar), that marked the approximate middle of the month, i.e., the fifteenth day in the months of March (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ides_of_March), May, July, and October, and the thirteenth day in the other eight months. The word ides comes from Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language), meaning "half division" (of a month).

So since most of our months are 30 or 31 days, the 15th. I guess February would have to be the 14th, though. I never knew that one before!

What an odd sight - a bunch of 15s marching down a road. . .but I don't know that it'd be scary.

The Ides of the month typically fell on the day (or close to the day) of the full moon. The full moon has profound effects upon the earth and upon people. The force of the full moons pull can sometimes cause odd behavior in people, thus the term "lunatic." It was this odd behavior that led to the term "Beware the Ides of March." When the full moon came close to the March equinox it was believed that the lunatics were a little lunier than usual.

Rev, I got my info from Wikipedia. I've also been taught that in high school when we read Julius Caesar. I've never head that version about the ides. Lunatic, yes, but not the ides part.

Here's the different uses from Wiki:
Ides may refer to:
A day in the Roman calendar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_calendar), that marked the approximate middle of the month, i.e., the fifteenth day in the months of March (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ides_of_March), May, July, and October, and the thirteenth day in the other eight months. The word ides comes from Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language), meaning "half division" (of a month).
Specifically, this may refer to the Ides of March (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ides_of_March), the date of Julius Caesar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Caesar)'s assassination (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination)
An Irish saint, better known as Saint Ita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Ita) or Ida
A brand of malt liquor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malt_liquor), "St. Ides (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Ides)," named after the Irish saint; in turn, this beverage inspired the songs:

"St. Ides Heaven" by Elliott Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Smith), released on his eponymous album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliott_Smith_%28album%29) in 1995 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995)
"St. Ides" by the Wu-Tang Clan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu-Tang_Clan)

Evert Ysbrants Ides (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Evert_Ysbrants_Ides&action=edit) (1657–1708/9), also known as Adam Brand (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Adam_Brand&action=edit) — traveller and negotiator who served Tsar Peter I of Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_I_of_Russia) between 1691 and 1695, when he was sent to Peking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peking) to pay homage to the Emperor.

From Wikipedia:

The Romans had special names for three specific days in each month. The system appears to originally have been based on phases of the Moon (Luna), and these days were probably declared publicly when the lunar conditions were observed. After the reforms of Numa Pompilius, they occurred on fixed days. The named days were:

Kalendae (Kalends) — first day of the month, from which the word "calendar" is derived; thought to have originally been the day of the new moon. Interest on debt was due on Kalends.
Nones — depending on the month, could be the 5th or the 7th day; thought to have originally been the day of the half moon.
Ides — depending on the month, could be the 13th or the 15th day; thought to have originally been the day of the full moon. The Romans considered this an auspicious day in their calendar.Months with Nones on the 5th and Ides on the 13th days: January, February, April, June, August, September, November, December.
Months with Nones on the 7th and Ides on the 15th days: March, May, July, October.

In ancient Rome, March was the first month of the year as that's when the spring equinox occured..

I enjoyed Chocolat. It was a little strange, but it had that definite "unique outsider making a difference in a staid town" storyline going for it. Twenty years ago, and with a more upbeat score, it was Footloose. *grins*

I really liked the main actress. And I was pleased wiht how low-key Depp was as the gypsy -- he tends to have over-the-top characters, which can get annoying after a time. But my favorite was the guy who played the Count. Alfred Molina. I loved him in Frida, and he put a surpisingly tragic face on a supervillain in Spiderman 2. But I really love how in Chocolat he manages the small, sad, but poignant changes that happen to him through the story. For a secondary character, his is the one that really stayed with me after I'd seen it the first time.

There was an elderly man at home, upstairs, dying in bed.
He smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies baking. He wanted one last cookie before he died. He fell out of bed, crawled to the landing, rolled down the stairs and crawled into the kitchen where his wife was busily baking cookies.
With his last remaining strength he crawled to the table and was just barely able to lift his withered arm to the cookie sheet. As he grasped a warm, moist chocolate chip cookie, his favorite kind, his wife suddenly whacked his hand with a spatula.
Gasping for breath, he asked her, “Why did you do that??

“Keep away, those are for the funeral.?

well, my dad's shoulder has TWO chips in it -- he went to the ortho today -- he will stay in the sling for 3 more weeks (at least) and then go back to the ortho...
Sorry about your dad....those shoulders....ouch!

The more it changes, the more it stays the same, so you're covered.

Since all Lutherans are heathens we could call it the "Liar's den"

How about the NutHouse? ;) Most people think we're nuts when we tell them our theology anyway.

Really?
I usually find that people are quite impressed and respect it. We are often referred to as the best theologians for good reason.

Okay, there's a poll for voting on new names for the fellowship thread, I dug up some of the old things people were favoring and added to it.

Go vote here: http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=5019263

I, more often, find that what LilLamb said is true.

2 Penticostals, from the church a few blocks from us, came to my door this week. They appeared shocked that I knew I was going to heaven because of what Christ had done for me.

I'm not shocked that they knew that. I just don't get it. One guy's eyes got real large when I seemed to know what the bible says. They were nice to me though, and I give them credit for knocking on doors.

I find that people are quite impressed and respect us, but don't really get us. That is my experience anyway.

Could he possibly be prepping early for Easter services (and also Lenten services that remain)? It's a busy time of year for pastors!
